Indicators of need for occupational therapy in patients with chronic pain: occupational therapists' focus groups.

This study explores occupational therapists' (OT) perceptions of indicators for occupational therapy interventions among patients with chronic pain. An exploratory design was applied to six focus groups of OTs (n = 25) for data collection. Analysis was performed using content analysis through identification of meaning units, codes, categories and themes. Limitations of occupational performance was a major theme that included participant restrictions caused by physical, emotional and environmental barriers. Five subthemes of need were identified: 1) pain behaviour that prevented engagement in a

Special Issue on Occupational Therapy With Neurodivergent People.

Bisphosphonates (BPs)-related osteonecrosis of jaw (BRONJ) is a severe complication of the long-term administration of BPs. The development of BRONJ is associated with the cell death of osteoclasts, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In the current study, the role of Zoledronic acid (ZA), a kind of bisphosphonates, in suppressing the growth of osteoclasts was investigated and its underlying mechanism was explored. The role of ZA in regulating osteoclasts function was evaluated in the RANKL-induced cell model. Cell viability was assessed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and fluor

Botulinum toxin and occupational therapy for Writer's cramp.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp (WC) is a form of focal hand dystonia, for which focal botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injections are the current best therapy. Past studies have shown that some types of rehabilitative therapy can be useful. We hypothesized that BoNT together with a specific type of occupational therapy would be better than BoNT alone for treating WC patients comparing the effects with a patient-rated subjective scale. METHODS: Twelve WC patients were randomized to two groups. Six received only BoNT therapy and 6 received BoNT & occupational therapy. The occupational therapy involved s

Occupational therapy for epidermolysis bullosa: clinical practice guidelines.

The purpose of this article is to summarize the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (DEBRA) International evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for the provision of occupational therapy (OT) for children and adults living with inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB). This is a rare genetic disorder characterized by skin fragility leading to blister formation occurring spontaneously or following minor trauma. Current OT practice for persons with EB is based on anecdotal care, clinical expertise and trial and error with collaboration between caregiver and patient. Int

Awareness and Knowledge about Occupational Therapy in Jordan.

Knowledge and awareness about occupational therapy (OT) are essential for the delivery of quality care to all clients and for occupational therapists' (OTRs) job satisfaction. OT has been a poorly understood profession in Jordan. The current study reports on the assessment of Jordanians' awareness and knowledge of occupational therapy. Convenience sampling was used. There were 829 participants (474 males, 355 females), with mean age of 32 ± 11.6 yrs. They were recruited from the three main geographical areas of Jordan (northern, central, and southern) and from all educational levels. The sampl

Occupational therapy for care home residents with stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a worldwide problem and is a leading cause of adult disability, resulting in dependency in activities of daily living (ADL) for around half of stroke survivors. It is estimated that up to 25% of all care home residents in the USA and in the UK have had a stroke. Stroke survivors who reside in care homes are likely to be more physically and cognitively impaired and therefore more dependent than those able to remain in their own home. Overall, 75% of care home residents are classified as severely disabled, and those with stroke are likely to have high levels of immobility,

Outcomes in hand rehabilitation using occupational therapy services.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure functional outcomes after outpatient occupational therapy for clients who had upper-extremity injury and surgery or both. METHODS: A sample of 33 clients referred to occupational therapy outpatient intervention was recruited from five clinics in Ohio. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was used to guide the occupational therapy sessions and to measure outcomes. The Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire and the Short Form 36 (SF-36) were also administered to the clients pre and post 6 to 8 weeks of hand

Occupational therapy work-hardening programs: a demographic study.

A survey was conducted of 192 work-hardening and work-adjustment programs to gain an overview of practice patterns. The questionnaire covered program affiliation, services offered, staffing, program scheduling, average length of treatment per client, equipment used, physical settings, program status, number of clients seen each week, and types of functional outcome studies and research. The results demonstrate the tremendous growth of the involvement of occupational therapy in work hardening. This demographic study provides baseline information that can assist in the examination of trends and

The community work project: an occupational therapy programme.

The Community Work Project is a work adjustment programme, part of a range of prevocational services offered in the occupational therapy department of the Royal Ottawa Hospital, in Ottawa, Ontario. The special feature of this work adjustment programme is the use of an integrated work environment. Compared to institutionally-based programmes, this work adjustment programme consists of clients undergoing treatment alongside regular competitive employees in a real work setting. Another important feature of this programme is its open length of stay. The Community Work Project is described, with in

Occupational Therapy for Parkinsonian Patients: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Hand functionality and finger dexterity are impaired in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). These disturbances lead to a dependency in activities of daily living (ADL) and poor quality of life (QoL). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate whether a specific occupational therapy (OT) program is effective in improving finger and hand dexterity and its impact on ADL in PD patients. METHODS: We retrospectively studied PD patients, hospitalized for a 4-week multidisciplinary intensive rehabilitation treatment (MIRT) between January 2015 and June 2018. All patients underwent 1 h/day OT tr

Homelessness: perspectives, misconceptions, and considerations for occupational therapy.

SUMMARY Like poverty, the problem of homelessness has been with us to varying degrees since the founding of our nation. Attempts to explain homelessness have an equally long history. Hence, the literature and popular media are home to divergent perspectives, explanations, and characterizations of homelessness. The objectives of this paper are to present a unifying taxonomy of prominent perspectives on homelessness, and to illustrate how various perspectives lead to particular characterizations of persons who become homeless. The taxonomy traces the connection between perspectives and interpret

Hemiplegic shoulder pain: implications for occupational therapy treatment.

BACKGROUND: Hemiplegic shoulder pain is common after stroke causing hemiplegia. It adversely affects the recovery of arm function and independence in activities of daily living. Subluxation, abnormal tone and limited range of motion or capsular constrictions have been reported as potential causes. Other factors such as rotator cuff tears, brachial plexus injury, shoulder-hand syndrome and other pre-existing pathological conditions may also be associated with hemiplegic shoulder pain. The etiology remains unclear, but hemiplegic shoulder pain may result from a combination of the above factors.

A Scoping Review on Artificial Intelligence in Occupational Therapy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into occupational therapy, enhancing rehabilitation, assessment, and assistive technologies. However, its applications and challenges remain underexplored. This scoping review maps AI applications in occupational therapy, identifying benefits and challenges to inform practice and research. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines, a systematic search of six databases identified studies published between 2015 and
