Some observations on the fluids of odontogenic cysts.

The fluids of 44 dental cysts, 19 dentigerous cysts, 36 odontogenic keratocysts, and 12 ameloblastomas have been investigated. The incidence of epithelial cells, inflammatory cells, cholesterol crystals and bacteria was recorded in smears. There was a high incidence of epithelial cells in odontogenic keratocysts and not in other lesions. Cholesterol crystals had a similar incidence in all lesions. The proportion of the soluble proteins and total protein content was determined from cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Dental cysts contained an average of 51.19% albumin, 17.52% beta globulin, 22.0

Immunohistochemical expression of SPARC in odontogenic keratocysts: a comparative study with other odontogenic cysts.

BACKGROUND: Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) has been shown to modulate aggressive behavior in several benign and malignant tumors. Little is known about SPARC expression in odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), an odontogenic cyst with an aggressive nature. To the best of our knowledge, only one study has been investigated the expression of this protein in OKCs. This study aimed to characterize SPARC expression in OKCs. Additionally, to determine whether SPARC is associated with aggressive behavior in OKCs, SPARC expression in OKCs was compared with radicular cysts (RCs), dentiger

Immunohistochemical expression of SPARC and MMP-9 in odontogenic keratocysts and orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are locally aggressive odontogenic cysts with high recurrence propensity, whereas orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOCs) are indolent. Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) have been implicated in tumor invasion. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the immunohistochemical expression of SPARC and MMP-9 in sporadic OKCs and OOCs, and to further explore the potential association between these two proteins in both types of cysts. DESIGN: SPARC and MMP-9 expression were evaluated in 24 sporadic

A case of orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst suspected to be a radicular cyst.

This report describes a case of orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst arising in the mandibular molar region of a 39-year-old man. Under the initial clinical diagnosis of radicular cyst, root canal treatment was performed on the mandibular right second molar. The treatment that continued for six months did not achieve healing. Subsequently surgical intervention was selected since the tooth fracture was found, and the prognosis was judged to be poor. After atraumatic tooth extraction, the apical cystic lesion was enucleated, and the tooth was replanted. A definite diagnosis of orthokeratinized odon

Immunoexpression of CXCL12 and CXCR4 in Radicular Cysts, Dentigerous Cysts, and Odontogenic Keratocysts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunoexpression of chemokine CXCL12 and its receptor CXCR4 in radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and to correlate the findings with morphologic parameters of RCs (inflammatory infiltrate and cystic epithelium). Twenty RCs, 20 DCs, and 20 OKCs were submitted to immunohistochemistry. The percentages of cytoplasmic (CXCL12 and CXCR4) and nuclear (CXCR4) staining in epithelial and fibrous capsule cells were determined. RCs and DCs exhibited higher epithelial expression of CXCL12 than OKCs ( P <0.05). The ex

Evaluation of mast cells in periapical cysts, dentigerous cysts, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors.

BACKGROUND: Several cell types are associated with the development of cystic and tumoral odontogenic lesions. Among inflammatory cells, mast cells can be associated with their pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to analyze mast cells in periapical cysts, dentigerous cysts, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors. METHODS: Tissue sections were submitted to toluidine blue staining and immunohistochemistry with antibody anti-tryptase (clone G3). Mast cells were quantitated using Image-Pro Plus software to obtain the mean number of mast cells in three regions: epithelial, superficial portion of t

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma arising in the background of a calcifying odontogenic cyst.

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, representing 3% of all ghost cell lesions of the jaws. They can arise de novo or from a pre-existing calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) or dentinogenic ghost cell tumour (DGCT). A systematic review of the literature reported only 12 cases of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC. This report highlights an additional case of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC after 3 years in an adolescent male. The patient initially presented with a painless swelling of the right mandibular corpus. Panoramic radiographic examination show

Calcifying odontogenic cyst with odontogenic keratocyst: a case report and review of the literature.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), first identified as a separate and distinct lesion by Gorlin et al. in 1962, is an uncommon benign lesion, consisting of a proliferation of odontogenic epithelium and scattered nests of ghost cells and calcifications that may form the lining of a cyst or present as a solid mass. The COC occurs alone or occasionally with odontomas or other odontogenic tumors, and it is this variable histology and clinical behavior that has raised the question of whether or not it is a cyst or a true neoplasm. The odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a locally aggressive odontog

Magnetic resonance imaging: a useful tool to distinguish between keratocystic odontogenic tumours and odontogenic cysts.

In contrast to odontogenic cysts, keratocystic odontogenic tumours often recur and require more aggressive surgical treatment, so we tried to find features that distinguished between them on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Without knowing the diagnosis, two radiologists reviewed intensity (low, intermediate, or high) and homogeneity (homogeneous or heterogeneous) of signals in short-tau-inversion-recovery (STIR), T1- and T2-weighted, and fat-suppressed, contrast-enhanced MRI in 20 consecutive patients with oval, radiolucent lesions of the mandible on panoramic radiography, and who were subse

Differentiation of odontogenic keratocysts from other odontogenic cysts by the expression of bcl-2 immunoreactivity.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) present an aggressive course with a marked tendency to recurrence. The epithelium of OKC is thought to have an intrinsic growth potential and has been shown to present a higher rate of proliferation as compared to other types of cyst. bcl-2 has a role in the extension of cell survival. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the bcl-2 protein expression in different odontogenic cysts. A total of 19 dentigerous cysts (DC), 20 radicular cysts (RC) and 14 OKC were used in the present study. DC and RC showed an almost complete negativity for bcl-2. OKC, on

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst: Case Series.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon and aggressive jaw cyst with a high recurrence rate. It may grow into a large size. Diagnosis of the cyst is challenging since it may be confused with some other jaw cysts and malignancies. Treatment methods vary from conservative surgery to radical bone resection. In this case series, we briefly present five cases of GOC diagnosed and treated at our clinic. Thorough histopathological diagnosis and long-term follow-up are necessary in patients with GOC.

Glandular odontogenic cyst: A rare entity.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon developmental odontogenic cyst of jaws with a relative frequency between 0.012 and 1.3%. GOC is very rare and only 111 cases have been documented in the English literature so far. Generally, this cyst is encountered in the anterior areas of the mandible and is more common with a wide age range, the mean age being 49.5 years and has a tendency to recur. GOC is often misdiagnosed because of its overlapping histopathological features with that of other odontogenic cysts such as lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) or botryoid cyst and central low-grade Mu

Glandular odontogenic cyst: systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the principal features of "glandular odontogenic cyst" (GOC), by systematic review (SR), and to compare their frequencies among four global groups. METHODS: The databases searched were the PubMed interface of MEDLINE and LILACS. Only those reports of GOCs that occurred in a series in the reporting authors' caseload were considered. All cases were confirmed histopathologically. RESULTS: 18 reports on 17 series of consecutive cases were included in the SR. GOC affected males twice as frequently and the mandible almost three times as frequently.

Characteristics of calcifying odontogenic cyst in Taiwanese.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a rare type of odontogenic cyst. This retrospective study analyzed the clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of COC in Taiwanese. METHODS: Ten cases of COC in 2 male and 8 female patients with a mean age of 29 years (range, 11 to 48 years) treated from January 1985 to December 2002 were included. Microscopic slides, clinical histories, and radiographic features of these 10 COC cases were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: COCs occurred in the maxilla in 3 cases and in the mandible in 7 cases. COCs were associated with i

Odontogenic tumors that mimic a dentigerous cyst.

Hyperplastic follicular tissue and a dentigerous cyst are the two most common entities associated with the crown of an impacted tooth. However, other diagnostic possibilities, including odontogenic tumors should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of a pericoronal radiolucency. This article presents three cases of radiolucent lesions that were histologically diagnosed as an odontogenic tumor, and stresses the importance of histological evaluation of all pericoronal radiolucencies.

Lactoferrin in aspirates of odontogenic cyst fluid.

The possibility that the presence of lactoferrin in aspirates of odontogenic cyst fluid might be a useful preoperative diagnostic marker for odontogenic keratocyst was investigated. Using qualitative and quantitative immunodiffusion methods fluid from 29 of 29 dental (radicular) cysts, 12 of 14 dentigerous cysts and 27 of 31 keratocysts were found to contain lactoferrin. Although some of the highest concentrations of lactoferrin were detected in fluids from keratocysts, there was no significant difference between lactoferrin concentrations among the three groups. Neutrophil elastase was detect
