It is not possible to accurately predict the perceptual response to odorants and odorant mixtures without understanding patterns of suppression and facilitation that result from interactions between the olfactory and trigeminal systems. The current study extends previous findings by exploring the effect of intensive training on the interaction between these systems and also by using a different mixed chemosensory stimulus to examine whether the principles established in earlier studies generalize to different odorants. Stimuli were chosen so as to selectively activate the olfactory (H2S) and t

Previously, we showed that adult human olfaction retains plasticity in the unilateral processing of molecular chirality (Feng and Zhou, 2019). Using a similar unilateral discrimination protocol across three experiments with human adults (n = 96; 1295 sessions), we now reveal distinct patterns of specificity, generalization, and persistence in olfactory learning, independent of adaptation or task difficulty. Training with binary odor mixtures at varying ratios consistently produced durable gains that transferred across nostrils and generalized to novel mixtures differing in both structure and p

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether intensive olfactory training provides better chances of recovery than classic protocols in persistent dysosmia after Covid-19.
INTRODUCTION: In the literature, olfactory training holds pride of place in the management of post-infection olfactory disorder, with a classic 4-odor protocol. On the other hand, few studies have assessed the benefit of more intensive training.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective randomized clinical trial (No. 2020-A01397-32) assessed olfactory training for persistent dysosmia due to COVID-19, with 5 weeks' to 12 months' progress

INTRODUCTION: It is estimated that up to one third of COVID-19 patients can develop long-lasting smell dysfunction. Viral infections, especially COVID-19, can cause anosmia through different pathomechanisms, and different strategies have been proposed for effectively managing post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction in clinical practice, with olfactory training being recommended as a first-line treatment option.
METHODS: This report describes a non-consecutive series of clinical cases. After COVID-19, eight cases (5 females, 3 males) of adult patients with long-lasting (3+ months) post-viral smell

BACKGROUND: Olfactory training is the only evidence-based treatment for post-viral olfactory dysfunction. Smell disorders after SARS-CoV-2 infection have been attributed to neuroinflammatory events within the olfactory bulb and the central nervous system. Therefore, targeting neuroinflammation is one potential strategy for promoting recovery from post-COVID-19 chronic olfactory dysfunction. Palmitoylethanolamide and luteolin (PEA-LUT) are candidate antiinflammatory/ neuroprotective agents.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate recovery of olfactory function in patients treated with PEA-LUT oral supplemen

PURPOSE: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, an increasing number of patients are afflicted by olfactory loss, a now well-recognized symptom of the disease. Though many patients seem to recover their sense of smell after a few weeks, a certain proportion of them seem to develop long-lasting olfactory disorder. Yet, as of October 2020, there is no recommended standardized treatment to reduce the risk of developing long-term olfactory disorder. In this pilot study, we investigated the efficacy and the safety of oral corticosteroids and olfactory training as a treatment for patients with persiste

Regular spontaneous oscillations were recorded both electro- and optophysiologically using a voltage-sensitive absorption dye in the olfactory part of the brain (procerebral lobe of the cerebral ganglia) of the gastropod mollusk Helix lucorum. Odor application caused transient changes in procerebral oscillations, and an odor-evoked potential was recorded in the procerebrum (PC). The wave of evoked potential originated near the place of olfactory nerve entrance into the PC and propagated via the procerebral neuropile toward the cell body layer. The spread of the odor-evoked potential correspond

BACKGROUND: Olfactory training is the most widely recommended treatment for smell loss; however, there are no randomised placebo-controlled trials evaluating its effectiveness in COVID-19. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of isolated training and factors associated to olfactory recovery.
METHODS: This is a prospective randomised double-blind controlled trial, using standard olfactory training (OT) and placebo (PB) in COVID-19 patients experiencing smell loss. They were followed up for 180 days and assessed with the Connecticut olfactory test (CCCRC) and with subjective methods on a monthly b

Like using a substandard calibrant to test and calibrate an instrumental detector, when detection canines are regularly exposed to less than optimal training material, their detection proficiency is diminished, risking the lives of their handlers and civilians they are intended to protect. This research examined canine detection proficiency to odor mixtures and the use of mixture training to improve said proficiency. Trained detection canines were tested on their ability to correctly locate their trained target odors, explosives or narcotics, in various mixtures from a series of blanks and dis

PURPOSE: Persistent chemosensory dysfunction is a debilitating symptom of Post-COVID-19 Syndrome (PCS). While olfactory training (OT) is effective in early post-viral smell loss, its efficacy in chronic, multisystemic PCS remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize a severely affected cohort and to evaluate changes in olfactory function during a structured OT intervention.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 29 patients with persistent PCS lasting > 12 weeks (mean duration approximately 30 months) were recruited from a specialized post-COVID outpatient clinic. All patients underwent str

During COVID-19 pandemic, clinicians have had to deal with an ever-increasing number of cases of olfactory disturbances after SARS-CoV-2 infections and in some people this problem persisted for long time after negativization from virus. This a prospective randomized controlled trial aims at evaluating the efficacy of ultramicronized palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and Luteolin (LUT) (umPEA-LUT) and olfactory training (OT) compared to OT alone for the treatment of smell disorders in Italian post-COVID population. We included patients with smell loss and parosmia who were randomized and assigned to

BACKGROUND: Persistent anosmia due to COVID-19 affects approximately 20 million individuals worldwide, with a serious detrimental effect on their quality of life. Effective treatments remain lacking, with olfactory training (OT) being supported by some evidence of benefit. We implemented a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial (RCT) combining OT with Anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (A-tDCS) with the aim to confirm the encouraging results of a preliminary study by our group. We also evaluated the long-term effectiveness of this intervention at both one- and six-months post-t

Rats were trained on an olfactory and a control modality (auditory or visual) discrimination task and brain membrane-associated protein kinase C (mPKC) was subsequently assessed using quantitative autoradiography of radiolabelled phorbol ester binding. In rats which received olfactory-cued training, mPKC showed a highly significant lateralization in the piriform cortex but not in the hippocampus. Both olfactory-trained rats and control modality rats showed a significant increase in mPKC in the hippocampus when compared to naive rats. Thus, while behavioral training procedures appeared to resul

Background: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common neurosensory manifestation in long COVID. An effective and safe treatment against COVID-19-related OD is needed. Methods: This pilot trial recruited long COVID patients with persistent OD. Participants were randomly assigned to receive short-course (14 days) oral vitamin A (VitA; 25,000 IU per day) and aerosolised diffuser olfactory training (OT) thrice daily (combination), OT alone (standard care), or observation (control) for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was differences in olfactory function by butanol threshold tests (BTT) between baseline

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) following COVID-19 affected up to 70% of patients, with more than 30% still reporting lingering symptoms a year later. Treatment is essential, as previous research has linked (postviral) OD to depression, impaired quality of life (QoL) and even heightened mortality rates.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We designed a monocentric, single-blinded randomised controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of olfactory training (OT) in individuals with persisting COVID-19-associated loss of smell. Randomisation will be done in a 1:1 manner. OT will be performed using the S
