PURPOSE: To describe a case of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) associated with ocular and cerebral vasculitis.
METHODS: The authors report a 38-year-old woman who presented with bilateral uveitis 7 years after a penetrating trauma to the right eye. Ocular examination included fundus fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography. Medical history disclosed an episode of dysarthria and right-sided weakness.
RESULTS: Anterior uveitis was present in the previously injured pseudophakic right eye, which harbored a piece of glass stuck in the lower temporal iris. In the left eye, vitreal inflammation wi

The importance of this comparison between two large series of cases of sympathetic ophthalmia lies in its confirmation of our previous findings, which differ somewhat from the classical pathological description. Sympathetic ophthalmia remains a clinicopathological diagnosis, relying on a history of perforating injury to one eye, followed after a variable incubation period by inflammation in the fellow eye. The inflammatory changes in both eyes consist of a diffuse, granulomatous proliferation throughout the uveal tract, which involves the choriocapillaris and the retina late in its course. The

PURPOSE: To describe an atypical case of sympathetic ophthalmia. Design: Case report.
RESULTS: A 37 -year-old female presented a 3-day long acute left retroocular pain and photophobia, 1 month after having undergone evisceration of the fellow eye. Upon exploration, the patient presented conjunctival injection, macular retinal folds with peripapillary subretinal fluid, and hypocyanescent choroidal spots on indocyanine green angiography. A sympathetic ophthalmia with a reactive posterior scleritis involvement was diagnosed. The patient underwent treatment with prednisone, mycophenolate, and cyc

This study correlates fluorescein angiography (FA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) to histopathologic findings in a patient with sympathetic ophthalmia. A male with a perforated trauma in right eye presented after two months a decrease in visual acuity of the left eye. FA and ICGA were performed and the images were correlated with the histopathologic findings of the enucleated eye; FA showed background areas of homogeneous hypofluorescence in the arterial and venous phases, as well as areas of granular progressive hyperfluorescence and leakage from the optic disc. ICGA showed areas of

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) is paucibacillary, making its diagnosis difficult based on laboratory investigations alone. We present a case of a patient with a TPE who was initially misdiagnosed to have azathioprine-induced lung injury. The diagnosis of TPE was arrived at with the help of clinical assessment, laboratory and radiological investigations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old chronic smoker with sympathetic ophthalmia on long-term immunosuppression, latent tuberculosis infection and a significant family history of tuberculosis presented with a three-week history of p

Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a rare bilateral diffuse granulomatous panuveitis that occurs in few days to several years after penetrating injury. This intraocular inflammation can occur in any age group without a sex predilection. Pathology and immunohistochemistry-supported evidence is important to know the disease in a better way. We present a case of a 24-year-old female with clinical diagnosis of SO with an atypical past history of chicken pox in that eye and residual corneal opacity.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic ophthalmia is a rare, bilateral granulomatous uveitis that typically follows penetrating ocular trauma or intraocular surgery. Its coexistence with proliferative diabetic retinopathy is uncommon and complicates diagnosis and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old woman with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes developed sympathetic ophthalmia in the fellow eye ten weeks after repair of a penetrating ocular injury. The sympathizing eye showed keratic precipitates, vitritis, papillitis, and exudative retinal detachment superimposed on proliferative diabetic retinopathy

We treated five patients with intractable sympathetic ophthalmia and six patients with severe Behçet's disease by high-dose, short-term chlorambucil therapy. We used a total dose ranging from 306 mg to 4.2 g and a duration of therapy no longer than 36 weeks and in most cases less than 24 weeks. After termination of therapy all 11 patients had a sustained remission of their eye disease. Unless subretinal neovascularisation was present, all had a final visual acuity of 20/50 or better. Malignancy has not developed in any of our cases, with a follow-up ranging from 6 months to 12 years (mean, 4.5

PURPOSE: To describe a case series of presumed Sympathetic Ophthalmia (SO) triggered by diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (CPC) for the treatment of neovascular glaucoma.
METHODS: Patients developing bilateral granulomatous uveitis after CPC between 2014 and 2024. Cases with prior ocular trauma or penetrating ocular surgery were excluded. Treatment consisted of systemic steroids acutely and subsequently steroid-sparing drugs for long-term control.
RESULTS: Three patients were included. The cause of neovascular glaucoma in the inciting eyes was a central retinal vein occlusion. The ocular inf

We describe a case of a 13-year-old male patient of Coats' disease who developed sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) following contact diode laser cyclophotocoagulation. There was no history of invasive surgery or any perforating injuries preceding cyclodestructive therapy. The eye had neovascular glaucoma secondary to Coats' disease, which was treated once with contact cyclophotocoagulation. Subsequently, the intraocular pressure slowly decreased, and the eye became phthisical. Intraocular inflammation developed in the fellow eye and SO was suspected, which was confirmed by characteristic findings se

A 44-year-old man had a blind painful right eye secondary to neovascular glaucoma. Cyclocryotherapy was performed because medical therapy was ineffective in lowering the intraocular pressure or reducing the pain. The eye became comfortable, but 5 months later vision decreased in the left eye. Examination revealed a marked posterior uveitis suggestive of sympathetic ophthalmia. Enucleation of the right eye and corticosteroid therapy were effective in eliminating inflammation in the left eye. Histopathologic examination of the exciting right eye revealed classic signs of sympathetic ophthalmia.

A 17-year-old female patient of Asian origin presented to the Ocular Immunology Unit of Reggio Emilia Hospital in July 2017, complaining of nausea, vomiting, low-grade fever, tinnitus, and headache going on for 3 days, followed by the appearance of blurred vision in the left eye. Three months before (April 2017) she had a history of penetrating keratoplasty in the right eye for a diagnosis of Acanthamoeba keratitis unresponsive to antiamoebic therapy. The clinical examination exhibited a picture of bilateral panuveitis with papillitis and exudative detachment of the retinal neuroepithelium. Th
