Enhancing Clinical Decision-Making in Complex Corneal Disorders: The Role of In-Vivo Confocal Microscopy.

This study aims to describe how in-vivo confocal microscopy (ICVM) results improved diagnosis and treatment in three patients with complex corneal disorders at a single institution. Case one was a 36-year-old woman contact lens wearer referred to the hospital eye service (HES) by her community optician for a suspected corneal ulcer in her left eye. The case demonstrated that where laboratory cell culture was inconclusive, IVCM imaging improved diagnosis and more importantly adjusted the initial treatment till the complete resolution of the case. Case two was a shared-care 66-year-old keratocon

Why don't older adults in England go to have their eyes examined?

PURPOSE: Preventable sight loss is one of the Public Health Outcome Indicators in England. Despite availability of NHS-funded eye examinations, many people do not take up their entitlement. This paper explores older adults understanding of eye health and the purpose of eye examinations and the reasons why they do or do not attend for eye examinations. The aim is to provide evidence to inform policy on increasing uptake of eye examinations among older people who have increased risk of preventable sight loss. METHODS: 10 focus-group meetings were held with people living in deprived areas of Lee

SENSE-Cog Residential Care: hearing and vision support for residents with dementia in long-term care in Ireland-protocol for a pilot cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hearing and vision loss is highly prevalent in residents with dementia (RwD) living in long-term care (LTC) facilities. Sensory loss often has a negative impact on quality of life and other dementia-related outcomes. Optimising sensory function may improve dementia-related outcomes in LTC facilities. The SENSE-Cog Residential Care pilot trial will evaluate whether a multi-faceted hearing and vision intervention for RwD and concurrent sensory loss is suitable for definitive testing in a large-scale cluster-randomised control trial (RCT) in Ireland and how this can best be achieved.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy as the initial presenting feature of type 1 diabetes.

SUMMARY: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disorder caused by the destruction of the pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. Individuals with T1DM usually require at least 3-5 years to develop microvascular complications in comparison to people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), who may develop complications even before the diagnosis of diabetes. We discuss a patient who presented with proliferative diabetic retinopathy subsequently diagnosed with T1DM and diabetic neuropathy following investigations. Diabetic retinopathy or other microvascular complications as the presenting fe

Paediatric Choroidal Neovascularisation of Unknown Cause.

Choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) is a condition characterised by the proliferation of abnormal blood vessels within the choroid. These vessels tend to leak blood and fluid into the adjacent tissues, thereby causing harm to the retina and posing a threat to visual function. The infrequency of CNV in children can be attributed to its predominant association with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The incidence of CNV in paediatric patients is generally considered to be very low, with rates often cited as being less than one case per 100,000 individuals annually. We present a 10-year-old f
