BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the changes in the axial length (AL) in myopic children that wear centered and decentered orthokeratology (Ortho-K).
METHODS: This retrospective study included 217 subjects who were treated with an Ortho-K lens for >12 months. The subjects were divided into three groups based on the magnitude of the Ortho-K lens treatment zone decentration: mildly, moderately, and severely decentered groups. Distance and direction of treatment zone decentration were calculated using software that was developed in-house. The AL changes in different groups were compared.

Intervention to slow axial elongation and progressing degree of myopia has become an important public health issue. Although orthokeratology (OrthoK) has been prescribed to temporarily reduce or eliminate refractive error, myopic children undergoing OrthoK have shown significant slowing of axial elongation and myopic progression. This review presents data on the efficacy, benefits, and risks of the use of OrthoK to slow axial elongation in myopic children. It also discusses how OrthoK fits into an overall strategy of myopia management in practice compared with alternative prescribed interventi

Myopia has significantly risen in East and Southeast Asia, and the pathological outcomes of this condition, such as myopic maculopathy and optic neuropathy linked to high myopia, have emerged as leading causes of irreversible vision loss. Addressing this issue requires strategies to reduce myopia prevalence and prevent progression to high myopia. Encouraging outdoor activities for schoolchildren and reducing near-work and screen time can effectively prevent myopia development, offering a safe intervention that promotes healthier habits. Several clinical approaches can be employed to decelerate

The increasing incidence of myopia has become a global public health concern. Exploring the mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of myopia is crucial for prevention and control. This paper reviews the role of peripheral retinal defocus mechanisms in the development of myopia, with particular emphasis on the interaction between accommodation lag and peripheral retinal defocus, as well as the impact of optical intervention on myopia control effectiveness. In recent years, researchers have developed various optical tools for myopia prevention and control based on the peripheral retinal

PURPOSE: When myopia control treatment is discontinued, progression will increase, but does it revert to expected values based on the age and race of the child or does it accelerate further? The latter scenario is considered a rebound.
METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted with the words 'rebound' and 'myopia control', identifying further papers from reviews. Inclusion was limited to prospective studies with ≥6 months of treatment, ≥3 months of data following cessation and with axial length data, which allowed calculation of rebound. Nineteen studies were identified, comprising 24 treatment

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between relative corneal refractive power shift (RCRPS) and axial length growth (ALG) in bilateral myopic anisometropes treated with orthokeratology.
METHODS: A total of 102 children with myopic anisometropia in this prospective interventional study were randomly assigned to the spectacle group and orthokeratology group. Axial length (AL) and corneal topography was measured at baseline and the 12-month follow-up visit. ALG was defined as the difference between the two measurements, and RCRPS profiles were calculated from two axial maps obtained.

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is the process of deliberately reshaping the anterior cornea by utilising specialty contact lenses to temporarily and reversibly reduce refractive error after lens removal. Modern ortho-k utilises reverse geometry lens designs, made with highly oxygen permeable rigid materials, worn overnight to reshape the anterior cornea and provide temporary correction of refractive error. More recently, ortho-k has been extensively used to slow the progression of myopia in children. This report reviews the practice of ortho-k, including its history, mechanisms of refractive and oc

SIGNIFICANCE: The change in peripheral refraction from hyperopic to myopic defocus following orthokeratology (OK) has been recognized as a main factor in myopia control. However, the impact of OK lenses on peripheral refraction at nearpoints in myopic eyes still requires further investigation.
PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate changes in peripheral refraction during accommodation in myopic adults after orthokeratology (OK) wear.
METHODS: Twenty-four selected myopic adults (mean spherical equivalent: -2.70 ± 1.04 D) participated in this study. Peripheral refractions were measured by an

Childhood myopia is a growing global public health concern. Treatments to control myopia are a priority because myopia, particularly high myopia, poses significant lifelong risks of vision loss from myopia-associated ocular pathologies. Intensive research efforts over the past two decades have led to the development of several effective strategies for controlling myopia in children: increased time outdoors, atropine eye drops, dual-focus and multifocal contact lenses, orthokeratology lenses, and specialized spectacle lenses. While the efficacy of these strategies is variable, evidence is growi

The alarming increase in childhood myopia has emerged as a significant public health concern. Due to its long-term consequences, there is also an expanding interest in adult-onset myopia. This review provides a comprehensive summary of interventions for slowing the onset and progression of myopia and discusses factors influencing their efficacy. Outdoor time is an effective intervention for at-risk pre-myopes, which can reduce myopia onset by up to 50 % and has been implemented on a large scale in some countries through school reforms. 0.05 % atropine and repeated low-level red light (RLRL) ha
