Background: Polyploidization generates extensive gene redundancy, but how duplicated metabolic genes are retained and subsequently diversified remains poorly understood. UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) provide a suitable system for examining this process because they participate in specialized metabolism, plant development, and environmental responses. This study aimed to characterize the retention, expansion, and regulatory divergence of the UGT family in allotetraploid Panax ginseng at subgenome resolution. Methods: We integrated telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome annotation, phylogenetic and

Ginsenosides are the major bioactive triterpene saponins in ginseng (Panax ginseng) and are important determinants of its medicinal value. In vitro propagation of ginseng adventitious roots enables large-scale production of ginseng biomass under controlled culture conditions, and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is widely used to enhance ginsenoside accumulation in this system. However, how jasmonate signaling activates ginsenoside biosynthesis and reshapes ginsenoside composition remains unclear. Here, we found that MeJA treatment markedly increased total saponin content and shifted ginsenoside compos

Two sample pretreatment methods of pesticide residues in Panax notoginseng of Chinese traditional medicine were developed. For Method I, the residues were extracted from homogenized tissue with n-hexane-dichloromethane (6:4) by means of ultrasonication, the crude extract was purified by an Envi-carb/NH2 solid-phase extraction (SPE) column. For Method II, matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) technique was used for extracting and cleaning up. The eluates were concentrated by rotary evaporation, and then were redissolved in dichloromethane prior to GC-MS determination. The determination was perfo

Panax notoginseng saponins have recently been reported to suppress liver fibrosis. Since ginsenoside-Rg1 is the most abundant component of P.notoginseng saponins, we investigated the effect of ginsenoside-Rg1 on experimental liver fibrosis in rats. Histological analysis revealed that ginsenoside-Rg1 significantly improved the extent of liver fibrosis in rats induced by thioacetamide. Ginsenoside-Rg1 markedly suppressed the serum levels of fibrotic markers and hepatic hydroxyproline content in rats treated with thioacetamide. Ginsenoside-Rg1 also reduced the serum levels of alanine transaminase

BACKGROUND: Leaf development underpins physiological performance and secondary metabolite accumulation, yet its influence on phyllosphere fungal communities in perennial medicinal plants such as ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) remains poorly understood. Understanding how developmental stage affects leaf chemistry and microbial assembly is important for linking plant metabolism with aboveground microbial ecology.
RESULTS: We analyzed ginseng leaves across four developmental stages (S1-S4) using physiological measurements, ginsenoside profiling, untargeted metabolomics, ITS amplicon sequenci

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic cataract (DC) are two closely related microvascular complications of diabetes. Panax notoginseng, a plant from the Araliaceae family and genus Panax, is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood circulation-promoting properties. Recent studies suggest that drugs possessing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and blood circulation-promoting characteristics may have unexpected benefits in treating diabetic microvascular complications. This study employs network pharmacology to investigate

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Panax notoginseng (P. notoginseng) has traditionally been used to support circulatory health. Its higher ginsenoside content and the presence of notoginsenoside R1 distinguish it from Panax ginseng and contribute to broader therapeutic potential. This review summarizes the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of P. notoginseng and their relevance to cardiovascular, hepatic, and metabolic disorders.
METHODS: A structured search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar was performed on December 20, 2024, covering January 2010 to July 2024. Studies published in Eng

Porcine pseudorabies (PR) is an important infectious disease caused by pseudorabies virus (PRV), which poses a major threat to food safety and security. Vaccine immunization has become the main means to prevent and control the disease. However, since 2011, a new PRV variant has caused huge economic losses to the Chinese pig industry. Panax notoginseng polysaccharides have immunomodulatory activity and other functions, but the antiviral effect has not been reported. We studied the anti-PRV activity of Panax notoginseng polysaccharides in vitro. A less cytopathic effect was observed by increasin

A simple, reproducible and sensitive micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) method was developed for the separation and determination of 10 saponins from Panax notoginseng. Field-enhanced sample injection with reverse migrating micelles (FESI-RMM) was used for on-line concentration of the saponins. The effects of concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and organic modifier, the sample matrix, the injection time of water plug, the injection voltage and injection time of sample on the separation and stacking efficiency were investigated. The optimum buffer contained 10mM H3PO4, 140

Skin wound repair involves four stages: haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. Refractory wounds feature prolonged healing cycles, severe scar hyperplasia and limited clinical therapeutic strategies. Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS), primarily the ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 monomers, display high safety and multitarget regulatory properties across the entire wound repair cycle. PNS modulates the inflammatory microenvironment and induces M2-type polarization of macrophages by inhibiting NF-κB, MAPK and other signalling pathways; activates the PI3K/AKT pathway to promote the pro

INTRODUCTION: Phyllosphere microorganisms play essential roles in plant health and disease resistance, yet their responses to pathogen infections remain poorly understood. Panax ginseng is susceptible to multiple fungal diseases, which threaten its quality and yield. This study aimed to clarify the underlying disease resistance mechanisms of Panax ginseng by analyzing the phyllosphere fungal communities associated with fungal infections.
METHODS: Phyllosphere fungal communities of healthy Panax ginseng plants and those with three fungal infections (gray mold, damping-off and root rot) were co

Diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction (DACD) arises from interacting metabolic, vascular, inflammatory, and neuronal insults, but evidence for Panax-derived interventions is often overgeneralized across chemically non-equivalent materials. This critical narrative review evaluated whether defined Panax-derived saponins support a coherent mechanism of DACD and identified the evidence needed for translation. A structured multilingual search of eight bibliographic databases, supplemented by a targeted search of Cochrane CENTRAL, followed by deduplication and full-text reassessment, yielded 59

Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is a medicinal plant of considerable medical and economic interest. However, preserving its genetic stability and targeted selection pose challenges that limit the effective conservation and use of its genetic resources. This study aims to systematically elucidate the structural characteristics, evolutionary patterns, and phylogenetic relationships of the ginseng mitochondrial genome, in order to create a theoretical basis for the conservation of ginseng genetic resources and the acceleration of molecular selection processes. Using PacBio HiFi and DNBSEQ-T7 short-read s

Obesity and its associated complications, including oxidative stress, pose significant global health challenges. Natural products offer a promising avenue for developing novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, we investigated the potential of Panax japonicus (T. Nees) C.A. Meyer, a traditional medicinal plant known for its antioxidant and anti-obesity properties. A methanol extract of Panax japonicus and its fractions were evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant activities (tested using DPPH and reducing power assays), pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory capacities, and underlying mechanis

Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) are the main active components of Panax notoginseng. But after oral administration, they need to be converted into rare ginsenosides by human gut microbiota and gastric juice before they can be readily absorbed into the bloodstream and exert their effects. The sources of rare ginsenosides are extremely limited in P. notoginseng and other medical plants, which hinders their application in functional foods and drugs. Therefore, the production of rare ginsenosides by the transformation of PNS using Aspergillus fumigatus was studied in this research. During 50 days

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognized that atherosclerosis (AS) is related to vascular inflammation. Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) extracted from the roots of Panax notoginseng have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory activity. It is widely used in the clinical treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, but the protective effect of PNS on atherosclerosis is not fully understood. This study was designed to test the effects of PNS administration in apolipoprotein (apo)-E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice on the activation of NF-κB p65, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and Calpain1 proteins.

Although siderophore compounds are mainly biosynthesized as a response to iron deficiency in the environment, they also bind with other metals. A few studies have been conducted on the impact of heavy metals on the siderophore-mediated iron uptake by microbiome. Here, we investigated siderophore production by a variety of rhizosphere fungi under different concentrations of Zn²⁺ ion. These strains were specifically isolated from the rhizosphere of Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng). The siderophore production of isolated fungi was investigated with chrome azurol S (CAS) assay liquid media amended w
