Acute endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis associated with human parvovirus B19 infection.

A 36-year-old female developed acute nephritic syndrome associated with human parvovirus B19 (HPVB19) infection. Laboratory data showed proteinuria, hypocomplementemia, mild pancytopenia, the presence of immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG antibodies to HPVB 19 and positive reaction of serum HPVB19 DNA using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A renal biopsy showed endocapillary hypercellularity mainly of mononuclear cells with segmental apparent mesangiolytic change; fine granular IgM, IgG and C3 deposits were noted by immunofluorescence microscopy; relatively small electron-dense deposits were obse

Frequency of human parvovirus B19 infection in intrauterine fetal death.

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 is known to cause fetal death in the second trimester, mainly in combination with hydrops fetalis. However, the frequency of parvovirus-B19-associated non-hydropic fetal loss in the late second and third trimester has not been thoroughly investigated. We aimed to investigate the frequency of parvovirus B19 infection in unselected cases of intrauterine fetal death and to assess the sensitivity of different diagnostic procedures. METHODS: Of 14147 deliveries in three hospitals in the major Stockholm area of Sweden, all cases of intrauterine fetal death (>22 gestationa

Human parvovirus B19-induced aplastic crisis in iron deficiency anemia.

Human parvovirus B19 (HPVB19) infects and replicates in erythroid progenitor cells. Its specific cytotoxic effect on these cells results in aplastic crises in patients with congenital hemolytic anemias. Aplastic crisis due to HPVB19 infection in a healthy girl revealed occult iron deficiency anemia. The condition is characterized by a high serum iron level in the aplastic phase and rapid recovery after administration of iron. Temporary HPVB19-induced red blood cell aplasia could occur in patients with other anemias, particularly those with non-inherited form of hemolysis.

Diagnosis of human parvovirus B19 infections by polymerase chain reaction.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for detecting parvovirus B19 DNA in clinical specimens. A pair of oligonucleotide primers spanning the PstI-fragment of the B19 virus genome was used for PCR, and a PCR product of 727 bp was amplified. B19 virus DNA was detected in all sera (n = 26) of individuals in the incubation period and acute phase of infection. PCR was useful for detecting viral B19 DNA in amniotic fluid and fetal blood of hydropic fetuses, confirming fetal B19 virus infection.

[Human Parvovirus B19 : from benign infections to rare systemic complication].

Human Parvovirus B19 is a single-stranded DNA virus responsible for generally mild and self-limiting infections. In children, it causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), while in adults it often presents as symmetrical peripheral polyarthritis. Transmission occurs primarily via respiratory droplets, especially in settings with close contact, leading to recurrent seasonal outbreaks. PVB19 can cause hematologic complications in individuals with underlying blood disorders. Rare but serious complications may affect the cardiac, hepatic, renal, and neurological systems, as well as lead to hydro

Assessment of human parvovirus B19 infection in Egyptian hemodialysis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Parvovirus B19V has been shown to be associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with increased risk of post-infection anemia, especially in hemodialysis (HD) patients. This effect may be due to immunosuppression, insufficient erythropoietin, or short lifespan of red blood cells. Therefore, parvovirus infection should be investigated in this group of patients suffering from anemia or pancytopenia. We assessed the frequency of parvovirus B19 in HD patients attending Suez Canal University Hospital and analyzed the correlation of this infection with hematological parameters in th

Epidemiologic study of human parvovirus B19 infection in East China.

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection causes a number of diseases in humans, and, in some circumstances, can be life threatening. To understand the epidemiology of B19V infection in the greater metropolitan area of Hangzhou, East China, we performed surveys of IgM and IgG antibodies against B19V and quantification of B19V DNA, by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and quantitative PCR, respectively, in plasma samples from diverse groups. These groups included anemia patients, Mycoplasma pneumonia- and Treponema pallidum-infected patients, HIV-positive individuals, and healthy blood donor

Human parvovirus B19 in Iranian pregnant women: a serologic survey.

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 infection is associated with clinical symptoms that vary in the spectrum from trivial to severe. The important clinical manifestations are erythema infectiosum or the fifth disease, transient aplastic anemia in patients with hemoglobinopathies, acute polyarthralgia syndrome in adults, hydrops fetalis, spontaneous abortion and stillbirth. Acute infection in nonimmune pregnant women can lead to fetal hydrops. In view of the many complications that can result from acute parvovirus B19 infections during pregnancy, documenting the seroprevalence of anti-parvovirus B19 IgG

Human parvovirus B19: a new emerging pathogen of inflammatory cardiomyopathy.

The human parvovirus B19 (PVB19), an erythrovirus causing diverse clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic or mild to more severe outcomes such as hydrops fetalis, is the only known human pathogenic parvovirus so far. Although enteroviruses have long been considered the most common cause of inflammatory cardiomyopathy, PVB19 is emerging as a important candidate. Recent studies have indicated an association of PVB19 with paediatric and adult inflammatory cardiac disease. However, whether or not PVB19 has an impact on inflammatory cardiomyopathy in adult patients is still unclear. The f

Human parvovirus B19 infection among patients with chronic blood disorders.

OBJECTIVE: In a normal host, parvovirus infection can be asymptomatic or can result in erythema infectiosum or arthropathy. Patients with underlying hematologic and immunologic disorders who become infected with this virus are at risk for aplastic anemia. This small study attempts to confirm this relation between the human parvovirus B19 infection as one of the predisposing factor of aplastic crisis in patients with hemolytic disorders. METHODS: The laboratory records of 73 patients' serum samples, which were tested for detection of specific Immunoglobulin M and Immunoglobulin G antibody by m

[Human parvovirus B19 infection mimicking systemic lupus erythematosus: case report].

Human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) has been known as the etiologic agents of erythema infectiosum in normal childhood, and chronic anemia and thrombocytopenia in immuno-compromised patients. Recently, this virus has been reported as the association with rheumatic manifestation such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We described here a patient whose HPV-B19 infection was mimiking atypical symptoms of SLE at diagnosis, and was persistent because of immuno-suppressive therapy for SLE. A 34-year-old female was admitted to our hospital on 22 June 1995, presenting fever epi

Childhood idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura: association with human parvovirus B19 infection.

PURPOSE: Infection with human parvovirus B19 is the most common cause of transient aplastic crisis in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia. Multiple reports of children with simultaneous B19 infection and thrombocytopenia as well as the known association between experimental B19 infection and thrombocytopenia prompted us to hypothesize that B19 may be associated with childhood idiopathic, or immune, thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Because there is a paucity of evidence regarding a viral etiology for ITP, we performed a comprehensive study to explore its possible relationship to B19 infection

New oligopeptide immunoglobulin G test for human parvovirus B19 antibodies.

A new, highly sensitive and specific enzyme immunoassay using oligopeptides as antigen (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] B19-OP) for detecting parvovirus B19-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) was established. As antigens, B19-specific oligopeptides of 24 and 30 kDa derived from a 196-kDa fusion protein of beta-galactosidase and viral capsid protein (VPI) of B19 after CNBr cleavage and separation by high-pressure liquid chromatography were used. Of 139 serum specimens tested in parallel for anti-B19 IgG by standard ELISA using B19 particles as antigen and by ELISA B19-OP, 73 (52.5%) were

Tracing the evolution and diversity of human parvovirus B19 across human history.

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is an ubiquitously spread, exclusively human pathogen, mainly posing risks to children, as well as pregnant and immunocompromised individuals. Despite evidence of B19V infection of human populations as far back as 7,000 years, the evolutionary history of B19V remains poorly understood. In this study, we present B19V genomic data from the remains of 53 globally distributed individuals spanning more than 8,000 years, including 7 children. Our findings suggest that the most recent common ancestor of all present B19V lineages existed around 12,000 years ago, at the end

Human parvovirus B19: a review of clinical and epidemiological aspects in Brazil.

Since the first evidence of human parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection in late 80s, several studies have been conducted to clarify the spectrum of clinical diseases in Brazil. B19V infection is prevalent in the general population and has exhibited a cyclical pattern of occurrence every 4-5 years, with the predominance of genotype 1 over 3b. During epidemic periods the wide range of clinical conditions, such as ertythema infectiosum, arthropathy, transient aplastic crisis, nonimmune hydrops fetalis and B19V-hepatitis were diagnosed. However, many infections are likely asymptomatic or have a self-lim

Human parvovirus B19 infection in patients with or without underlying diseases.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The clinical presentations of parvovirus B19 in patients with underlying diseases have greater diversity than previously healthy patients. We retrospectively identified patients with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed parvovirus B19 infection in attempt to describe its clinical features especially in these populations. METHODS: From 2009 to 2018, patients with real-time PCR-confirmed parvovirus B19 infection were collected. Comparisons were done between previously healthy patients and patients with preexisting diseases, as well as patients with high (>5.5 × 105 copi

Anaemia and fever in Kidney transplant. The role of human parvovirus B19.

Infections remain an issue of particular relevance in renal transplant patients, particularly viral infections. Human parvovirus B19 infection causes severe refractory anaemia, pancytopenia and thrombotic microangiopathy. Its presence is recognized by analysing blood polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and by the discovery of typical giant proerythroblasts in the bone marrow. We report the case of a 65 year-old man with a history of deceased donor renal transplant in September 2014. At 38 days after the transplant, the patient presented progressive anaemia that was resistant to erythropoiesis-stim
