Extending the Spectrum of Dysgraphia: A Data Driven Strategy to Estimate Handwriting Quality.

This paper proposes new ways to assess handwriting, a critical skill in any child's school journey. Traditionally, a pen and paper test called the BHK test (Concise Evaluation Scale for Children's Handwriting) is used to assess children's handwriting in French-speaking countries. Any child with a BHK score above a certain threshold is diagnosed as 'dysgraphic', meaning that they are then eligible for financial coverage for therapeutic support. We previously developed a version of the BHK for tablet computers which provides rich data on the dynamics of writing (acceleration, pressure, and so fo

Challenging functional connectivity data: machine learning application on essential tremor recognition.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This paper aimed to investigate the usefulness of applying machine learning on resting-state fMRI connectivity data to recognize the pattern of functional changes in essential tremor (ET), a disease characterized by slight brain abnormalities, often difficult to detect using univariate analysis. METHODS: We trained a support vector machine with a radial kernel on the mean signals extracted by 14 brain networks obtained from resting-state fMRI scans of 18 ET and 19 healthy control (CTRL) subjects. Classification performance between pathological and control subjects was eva

The functional neurobiology of dispositions towards negative emotions.

People differ in their tendency to experience negative emotions. This variability is largely captured by broad psychological constructs like neuroticism, whose facets include anxiety, depression, and stress vulnerability, among others. The amygdala and salience network have been assumed to underlie such dispositions, despite inconsistent evidence. We preregistered a comprehensive test of these and other competing hypotheses-accompanied by theory-agnostic machine learning prediction-using neural responses in the two most common emotional neuroimaging tasks (scenes and faces; N = 338/424). Evide

Integrating dietary patterns and metabolomics with machine learning for metabolic syndrome risk assessment in a rural population.

This study aimed to identify dietary patterns and metabolomic signatures associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and develop machine learning models integrating both dietary and metabolomic data for risk assessment. In this cross-sectional study of 2810 adults, four dietary patterns derived using principal component analysis were associated with MetS. Serum metabolomic profiling was conducted in 400 participants using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Metabolic signatures of the meat and traditional Chinese patterns remained positively associated with MetS, whereas the rice and

Cortical thickness patterns as state biomarker of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Only few studies have investigated cortical thickness in anorexia nervosa (AN), and it is unclear whether patterns of altered cortical thickness can be identified as biomarkers for AN. METHOD: Cortical thickness was measured in 19 adult women with restricting-type AN, 24 individuals recovered from restricting-type AN (REC-AN) and 24 healthy controls. Those individuals with current or recovered from AN had previously shown altered regional cortical volumes across orbitofrontal cortex and insula. A linear relevance vector machine-learning algorithm estimated patterns of regional thic

Integrating Machine Learning Approaches and Topological Indices for Prediction of Electronic Properties in Anticancer Drugs.

In this study, machine learning was used to predict electronic properties of anticancer drugs using molecular descriptors. Four machine learning models were employed to understand and predict the relationship between molecular structure and properties of the molecules. The results showed that extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) gave good prediction performance in handling complex and nonlinear patterns in the data. In all cases, the feature importance analysis showed a consistent ranking. It shows how molecular descriptors had an influence on property prediction. This study shows how molecular

Lymph Node Invasion Prediction in Prostate Cancer: A Comparative Machine-Learning Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative prediction of lymph node invasion (LNI) in prostate cancer is critical for guiding lymph node dissection. Current nomograms often fail to optimall balance the risks of missing metastatic cases and unnecessary dissections. Machine-learning models can provide improved predictive performance through more flexible modeling of complex clinical data. METHODS: The authors developed machine-learning models using clinicopathologic features to predict LNI. Due to a significant class imbalance between LNI-positive and LNI-negative cases, a synthetic minority oversamplin

Automated detection of stale beef from electronic nose data.

Accurate detection of stale beef on the market is important for protecting the legitimate rights and interests of consumers. To this end, we combined electronic nose measurements with machine learning technology to classify beef samples. We used an electronic nose to collect information about the odor characteristics of different beef samples and used linear discriminant analysis to reduce data dimensionality. We then classified samples using the following algorithms: extreme gradient boosting, logistic regression, K-nearest neighbor, random forest, support vector machine, and neural networks

Cellular cartography of the organ of Corti based on optical tissue clearing and machine learning.

The highly organized spatial arrangement of sensory hair cells in the organ of Corti is essential for inner ear function. Here, we report a new analytical pipeline, based on optical clearing of tissue, for the construction of a single-cell resolution map of the organ of Corti. A sorbitol-based optical clearing method enabled imaging of the entire cochlea at subcellular resolution. High-fidelity detection and analysis of all hair cell positions along the entire longitudinal axis of the organ of Corti were performed automatically by machine learning-based pattern recognition. Application of this

Improve the diagnosis of atrial hypertrophy with the local discriminative support vector machine.

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) approaches succeed in detecting a number of diseases, however, they are not good at addressing atrial hypertrophy disease due to the lack of training data. Support Vector Machine (SVM) is very popular in few CAD solutions to atrial hypertrophy. Yet the performance of SVM is moderate in atrial hypertrophy detection compared to its success in other classification problems. In this paper we propose a novel CAD algorithm, Local Discriminative SVM (LDSVM), to overcome the above-mentioned difficulty. LDSVM consists of a global SVM that is trained on the training data,

A Survey on Machine Learning Approaches for Automatic Detection of Voice Disorders.

The human voice production system is an intricate biological device capable of modulating pitch and loudness. Inherent internal and/or external factors often damage the vocal folds and result in some change of voice. The consequences are reflected in body functioning and emotional standing. Hence, it is paramount to identify voice changes at an early stage and provide the patient with an opportunity to overcome any ramification and enhance their quality of life. In this line of work, automatic detection of voice disorders using machine learning techniques plays a key role, as it is proven to h

Unsupervised class labeling of diffuse lung diseases using frequent attribute patterns.

PURPOSE: For realizing computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of computed tomography (CT) images, many pattern recognition methods have been applied to automatic classification of normal and abnormal opacities; however, for the learning of accurate classifier, a large number of images with correct labels are necessary. It is a very time-consuming and impractical task for radiologists to give correct labels for a large number of CT images. In this paper, to solve the above problem and realize an unsupervised class labeling mechanism without using correct labels, a new clustering algorithm for diffuse l
