Antifungal Biofilm Inhibitory Effects of Combinations of Diclofenac and Essential Oils.

Systemic fungal infections have risen in recent decades and most of them are caused by Candida species, which are becoming increasingly resistant to conventional antifungal drugs. Biofilm production has been considered the most common growth form of Candida cells and is associated with a high level of antifungal resistance. At present, international research reports on the antifungal activity of non-traditional antimicrobial drugs and their potential use against life-threatening resistant fungal infections. Indeed, drug repurposing has led to the consideration of well-known compounds as a last

In vitro study of essential oils encapsulated in chitosan microparticles against Histoplasma capsulatum and their pathogenicity in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Histoplasmosis, caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, poses risks for immunocompromised individuals. With limited therapeutic options, this study explores microparticles as antimicrobial delivery systems for Cymbopogon flexuosus and Pelargonium graveolens essential oils against H. capsulatum. The broth microdilution assay showed MICs of 32 to 128 µg/mL in filamentous phase and 8 to 64 µg/mL in yeast phase. Combining microparticles with antifungal drugs demonstrated synergistic effects in both filamentous and yeast-like forms with amphotericin B or itraconazole. Chitosan microparticles reduced H. c

Inhibition of lipoxygenase and prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase by anacardic acids.

C22:1 omega 5-anacardic acid was found to be a good inhibitor of both potato lipoxygenase and ovine prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase with approximate IC50's of 6 and 27 microM, respectively. Very similar inhibition was seen with the crude exudate, rich in omega 5-anacardic acids, from glandular trichomes of an arthropod-resistant strain of geranium, Pelargonium xhortorum. The saturated anacardic acid (C22:0 sat), abundant in the trichome exudate of susceptible strains, was nearly as inhibitory toward both prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase and lipoxygenase as the omega 5-unsaturated compou

Non-pharmacological remedies for post-viral acute cough.

The post-viral acute cough (PAC) is a widespread symptom, mainly in childhood and adolescence, and is usually associated with an acute upper respiratory infection, namely the common cold. The use of cough relievers is, therefore, impressive, as documented by the market data. There are many medical devices and dietary supplements for treating PAC, which contain non-pharmacological components. Ancient people used traditional herbs to treat PAC. Thus, a well-established tradition considers natural remedies as an effective and safe way to relieve PAC. The herbal agents include polyphenols, flavono

Control of Bacterial Wilt of Geranium with Phosphorous Acid.

Various bactericides were screened for efficacy in protecting geranium plants (Pelargonium hortorum) from Ralstonia solanacearum infection. Many of these bactericides were found to slow the disease progress; however, they were not able to protect the plants from infection and subsequent death. Potassium salts of phosphorous acid were found to be effective in protecting plants from infection when applied as a drench. The active portion of the potassium salts was found to be phosphorous acid (H3PO3). Phosphorous acid was found to inhibit in vitro growth of R. solanacearum. It is thought to be pr

Immediate skin and mucosal symptoms from pot plants and vegetables in gardeners and greenhouse workers.

Short-lived occupational skin symptoms of irritant or urticarial nature were commonly reported among 253 attendants in a clinical study on occupational dermatitis in Danish gardeners and greenhouse workers. Aimed prick or scratch-patch testing for immediate skin and mucosal symptoms was performed in 105 persons with plants as is. 35 persons (33%) had at least 1 positive reaction and a family history of, or personal, atopy was significantly more prevalent among these compared to attendants with negative reactions. Positive histamine release tests made immunologic etiology probable in Schlumberg

Essential oils block cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 delta variant.

Aiming to fill a gap in the literature, we aimed to identify the most promising EOs blocking in vitro cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 delta variant without conferring human cytotoxicity and provide insights into the influence of their composition on these activities. Twelve EOs were characterized by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The antiviral and cytotoxicity activities were determined using the cell-based pseudoviral entry with SARS-CoV-2 delta pseudovirus and the XTT assay in HeLa cells expressing human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (HeLa ACE-2), respectively. Activity of xyloglucan endotransglucosylases/hydrolases suggests a role during host invasion by the parasitic plant Cuscuta reflexa.

The parasitic vines of the genus Cuscuta form haustoria that grow into other plants and connect with their vascular system, thus allowing the parasite to feed on its host. A major obstacle that meets the infection organ as it penetrates the host tissue is the rigid plant cell wall. In the present study, we examined the activity of xyloglucan endotransglucosylases/hydrolases (XTHs) during the host-invasive growth of the haustorium. The level of xyloglucan endotransglucosylation (XET) activity was found to peak at the penetrating stage of Cuscuta reflexa on its host Pelargonium zonale. In vivo c

Botanical Drugs and Supplements Affecting the Immune Response in the Time of COVID-19: Implications for Research and Clinical Practice

In times of health crisis, including the current COVID-19 pandemic, the potential benefit of botanical drugs and supplements emerges as a focus of attention, although controversial efficacy claims are rightly a concern. Phytotherapy has an established role in everyday selfcare and health care, and since botanical preparations contain many chemical constituents rather than single compounds, challenges arise in demonstrating efficacy and safety. However, there is ample traditional, empirical and clinical evidence that botanicals can offer some protection and alleviation of disease symptoms as we

Treatment of the common cold in children and adults.

The common cold, or upper respiratory tract infection, is one of the leading reasons for physician visits. Generally caused by viruses, the common cold is treated symptomatically. Antibiotics are not effective in children or adults. In children, there is a potential for harm and no benefits with over-the-counter cough and cold medications; therefore, they should not be used in children younger than four years. Other commonly used medications, such as inhaled corticosteroids, oral prednisolone, and Echinacea, also are ineffective in children. Products that improve symptoms in children include v

Study of Antibiotic Resistance Potential of Spiders Bacteriota and Comparison With the Antibacterial Effect of Essential Oils.

Insect microorganisms significantly affect the diet, well-being and behavior of their hosts. However, the microbiota of spiders, which are important natural enemies of pests, is still largely unknown. To gain insight into the bacterial composition of spiders and their possible roles, we collected five different spider species: Pardosa hortensis, Pholcus phalangioides, Steatoda bipunctata, Steatoda triangulosa (Walckenaer, 1802), and Tegenaria domestica (Clerck, 1757). Mass spectrometry was used to identify the microbiota of each species. After identifying the microbes, the resistence to antibi

EPs 7630-solution--an effective therapeutic option in acute and exacerbating bronchitis.

Acute bronchitis is one of the most common diagnoses in ambulatory care medicine. Although the benefit of antibiotics for acute bronchitis, which is mostly virally induced, is disputed, they are often prescribed. A therapeutic option for respiratory tract infections that do not fall within the strict indication range for antibiotic administration is the liquid herbal drug preparation from the roots of Pelargonium sidoides, EPs 7630 (Umckaloabo), which has been tested against placebo in double-blind clinical trials. EPs 7630 has both antibacterial and immuno-modulating properties. The efficacy
