`Effect of adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy on periapical healing and IL-6 modulation in apical periodontitis: a pilot randomized controlled study.

Apical periodontitis (AP) is characterized by elevated IL-6 levels and periapical bone resorption. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a promising adjunct to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in root canal disinfection. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of adjunctive aPDT on IL-6 modulation and periapical healing in AP. This 11-month, parallel two-arm pilot randomized controlled study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in North India (February–December 2024). Participants of AP, aged 18–40 years with single-rooted teeth, were randomized (1:1) to Group A (NaO

Metformin suppresses periapical bone resorption in a mouse model of apical periodontitis in vivo and inhibits RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: Metformin (MET), a widely used antidiabetic drug, has recently gained attention for its anti-bone-resorptive properties. This study evaluated these effects in apical periodontitis (AP) and explored its underlying molecular mechanisms particularly its role in osteoclastogenesis. METHODS: AP was induced in the mandibular first molars of nine 6-week-old male C57BL/6 JJcl mice by pulp exposure for 21 days. MET (50 mg/kg/day) was administered intraperitoneally beginning 1 d before the procedure. Periapical bone resorption was evaluated using micro-computed tomography and tartrate-resis

Impact of chronic alcohol consumption on inflammatory response and periapical bone resorption in induced apical periodontitis: a systematic review of animal studies.

Alcohol consumption is linked to reduced bone mass and strength due to an imbalance in bone remodeling, characterized by decreased bone formation and an increased inflammatory response. Apical periodontitis affects the tissues surrounding the teeth and may also influence the systemic immune response by altering inflammatory marker levels. This systematic review examined how alcohol consumption affects the severity of experimental apical periodontitis in animal models. Following PRISMA guidelines, studies were sourced from three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) up to January 26, 2
