Dimensions of diastemata and associated periodontal food pockets in donkey cheek teeth.

Equine cheek teeth (CT) diastemata often cause deep periodontal food pocketing and are therefore regarded as a painful dental disorder of eq … depth = 4.1-mm) than the medial aspect (47.0% prevalence; mean pocket depth = 2.4-mm). The depth of periodontal pockets of diastemata was not associated with the height of the erupted crowns of adjacent CT.

Localization of Porphyromonas gingivalis-carrying fimbriae in situ in human periodontal pockets.

Fimbriae, which are involved in adherence, constitute an important pathogenic factor of Porphyromonas gingivalis. In vivo, however, the dist … lis-carrying fimbriae are strongly related to adherence to the root surface at the bottoms of human periodontal pockets.

[Clinical and bacteriologic response to irrigation with a chlorhexidine solution in the treatment of periodontal pockets].

Most of parodontal diseases have a bacterial aetiology. Their episodic and asynchronic evolution differs from site to site. The "in situs" antimicrobian used in the parodontal bags reduces the systemic administration. Various antibiotics or antiseptics slow liberation systems were experimented. Two patients suffering from advanced parodontitis were treated after radicular scraping by subgingival irrigation with a syringe filled with chlorhexidine. Each patient presented at last four parodontal bags more or less six millimetres (6 mm) deep. The following clinical parameters were noted: Patch in

The effect of supragingival plaque control on the composition of the subgingival flora in periodontal pockets.

The effect of mechanical supragingival plaque control on the composition of the subgingival microflora in untreated 4-6 mm deep periodontal pockets was investigated. 13 subjects with chronic periodontitis were recruited for the study. Periodontally-diseased sites were subjected to professional plaque control 3 x weekly for a period of 3 weeks. Contralateral sites received no prophylaxis and served as controls. No instructions in oral hygiene procedures were given to the patients who maintained their habitual oral hygiene regime during the observation period. Clinical examination and darkfield …

Changes in Periodontal Parameters and Microbiome Composition of Periodontal Pocket in Patients with Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Receiving Targeted Anti-Cytokine Therapy.

Periodontitis is associated with systemic chronic inflammatory diseases. There is limited evidence on the influence of anti-cytokine therapies on the periodontal condition and microbiome in the tooth pocket of such patients, so the aim of this study was to elucidate this issue. In this observational trial, the periodontal status and the gingival crevicular fluid of 13 patients with different chronic inflammatory diseases were obtained before the initiation of anti-cytokine treatment and 14 weeks after. Gingival crevicular fluid was collected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing from a clinically healt

Clinical evaluation of chitosan/polycaprolactone nanofibrous scaffolds releasing tetracycline hydrochloride in periodontal pockets of patients with chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: The role of bacteria in the initiation and progression of periodontitis has led to a great interest in using antibiotics to suppress pathogenic microbiota. Considering the drawbacks of systemic antibiotics' application, local delivery systems directly in the periodontal pocket can be helpful. Therefore, the effect of an efficient tetracycline-loaded delivery system was investigated on the clinical parameters of periodontitis. METHODS: In this clinical trial with a split-mouth design, 10 patients with periodontitis with pocket depths≥5 mm were included. After scaling and root plani…

Adhesion and invasion of Candida albicans from periodontal pockets of patients with chronic periodontitis and diabetes to gingival human fibroblasts.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate clinical isolates of Candida albicans, particularly their adhesion to and invasion of gingival human fibroblasts in culture and to measure nitric oxide concentration (NO) produced by fibroblasts in the presence of these yeasts. Sixteen strains of C. albicans isolated from patients with chronic periodontitis and diabetes mellitus type II were divided on the basis of phenotypic tests into two groups, i.e., highly or weakly hydrophobic. Primary cultures of human fibroblasts were isolated from gingival biopsies and after subsequent subcultures, the cel

Periodontal pocket as a potential reservoir of high risk human papilloma virus: A pilot study.

AIM: Human papilloma viruses (HPVs) are small DNA viruses that have been identified in periodontal pocket as well as gingival sulcus. High risk HPVs are also associated with a subset of head and neck carcinomas. HPV detection in periodontium has previously involved DNA detection. This study attempts to: (a) Detect the presence or absence of high risk HPV in marginal periodontiun by identifying E6/E7 messenger RNA (mRNA) in cells from samples obtained by periodontal pocket scraping. (b) Detect the percentage of HPV E6/E7 mRNA in cells of pocket scrapings, which is responsible for producing onco…

[Residual pocket depth after periodontal regenerative procedures. Clinical relevance and interpretation of meta-analyses data].

Meta-analyses allow to combine results systematically and to obtain more precise quantitative results on the efficacy of a therapy. For the clinician, the comparison of two therapy modalities is particularly of interest. Several meta-analyses exist in the field of periodontal regenerative procedures. The problem is that the results are difficult to interpret for the clinician. It is only the clinical effect that can indicate the superiority of a certain treatment modality, e.g. remaining periodontal pockets. The aim of the present systematic review was the re-evaluation of studies of existing …

Clinical and microbiological changes associated with an altered subgingival environment induced by periodontal pocket reduction.

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the effect of an altered subgingival environment, induced by changing the local soft tissue morphology, i.e., pocket depth reduction, on the subgingival microbiota and the clinical conditions. 7 patients aged 30-60 years with generalized marginal periodontitis were selected. Patients were instructed in proper oral hygiene and all teeth were cleaned supragingivally. Mucoperiosteal flaps were raised and the bone re-contoured to eliminate angular bony defects. While the control teeth were carefully debrided and thoroughly root planed, no root

Effects of hyaluronic acid as an adjunct to nonsurgical treatment of periodontal pockets: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by clinical attachment loss, periodontal pockets, bleeding on probing, gingival recession, and alveolar bone loss. Nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) is effective in the periodontal pocket reduction; however, a proportion of residual pockets can be assessed after completion of NSPT. Hyaluronic acid, due to its anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties, has been proposed as a topical adjunct to enhance NSPT outcomes. This review aimed to summarize and evaluate the current evidence on the adjunctive use of hyaluro…

Metronidazole-loaded bioabsorbable films as local antibacterial treatment of infected periodontal pockets.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is infectious in nature and leads to an inflammatory response. It arises from the accumulation of subgingival bacterial plaque and leads to the loss of attachment, increased probing depth, and bone loss. It is one of the world's most prevalent chronic diseases. In this study we developed and studied metronidazole-loaded 50/50 poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PDLGA), 75/25 PDLGA, and poly(DL-lactic acid) (PDLLA) films. These films are designed to be inserted into the periodontal pocket and treat infections with controlled-release metronidazole for >or=1 month. MET…

Temperate bacteriophages are common among Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans isolates from periodontal pockets.

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a suspected etiologic agent in destructive periodontal diseases. The detection of bacteriophages in A. actinomycetemcomitans in the subgingival plaque of patients with rapidly destructive forms of periodontitis led to the hypothesis that bacteriophage infection might increase the virulence of this bacterium (19). A. actinomycetemcomitans was isolated from 68 subjects from the Netherlands and Switzerland with localized juvenile periodontitis, rapidly progressing periodontitis, or adult periodontitis, and was tested for the presence of temperate bacterioph

Local ofloxacin delivery using a controlled-release insert (PT-01) in the human periodontal pocket.

PT-01, a controlled-release insert, was developed for topical chemotherapy in periodontal disease. It is a soluble insert that consists of fast-release and sustained-release parts containing ofloxacin (OFLX) as an antibacterial agent. In this study, the release profile of OFLX from PT-01 was investigated in vitro. Twelve adult volunteers were administered OFLX as PT-01 or as an aqueous solution into their periodontal pockets, OFLX concentrations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) were evaluated from the viewpoint of pharmacokinetics. The in vitro release profile of OFLX from PT-01 showed a bip…
