Review of Sterilization Techniques for Medical and Personal Protective Equipment Contaminated With SARS-CoV-2.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19 turned into a global pandemic in March 2020. During these unprecedented times, there is an increased demand in medical and personal protective equipment (PPE). Since the supplies may take a long time to meet the global demand, reusing PPEs will help health care workers in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure the safety and well-being of the medical first responders, PPE needs to be sterilized before reuse. In this review, we examine various sterilization techniques that can be used to sterilize PPEs and point out its limitat

Ebola virus disease: The use of fluorescents as markers of contamination for personal protective equipment.

The recent Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak has created interest in personal protective equipment (PPE) content and usage. PPE testing has historically been done by individual component, rather than as a bundle for contact isolation. Fluorescent agents are commonly used in training for infection control techniques. The purpose of our study was to compare 2 PPE bundles and to evaluate the feasibility of fluorescent markers as an assessment tool for PPE effectiveness. Eight healthcare providers volunteered for this preliminary study. Participants were randomized to 1 of 2 PPE bundles that meet

Practices in pesticide handling and the use of personal protective equipment in Mexican agricultural workers.

Practices related to the safe handling of pesticides and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) are largely unknown among agricultural workers in developing countries. The authors obtained information from 99 Mexican agricultural workers (35 women and 64 men) who answered questions on sociodemographic data, agricultural practices, use of pesticides, use of PPE, and risk perception. As expected, men handled pesticides more frequently than women (67% versus 20%). The workers carried out several agricultural tasks, as is customary in the case of fieldworkers who (1) work in small agricultural

Effect of wearing personal protective equipment on acoustic characteristics and speech perception during COVID-19.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the usage of personal protective equipment (PPE) has become 'the new normal'. Both surgical masks and N95 masks with a face shield are widely used in healthcare settings to reduce virus transmission, but the use of these masks has a negative impact on speech perception. Therefore, transparent masks are recommended to solve this dilemma. However, there is a lack of quantitative studies regarding the effect of PPE on speech perception. This study aims to compare the effect on speech perception of different types of PPE (surgical masks, N95 masks with face shield and t

Removal of Contaminated Personal Protective Equipment With and Without Supervision. A Randomized Crossover Simulation-Based Study.

INTRODUCTION: Personal protective equipment (PPE) reduces the risk of pathogens reaching the skin and clothing of health care personnel. We hypothesize that doffing PPE following verbal instructions by a supervisor is more effective in reducing contamination compared with doffing without verbal instructions. Our primary aim was to determine contamination rates with and without supervised doffing. The secondary aim was to determine the number and localization of contaminated body sites and PPE removal times in both groups. METHODS: Staff members of Bnai Zion Medical Center participated in this
