Impacts of heavy metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and pesticides on freeze tolerance of the earthworm Dendrobaena octaedra.

Previous studies have shown that the interactions between chemicals and climatic stressors can lead to synergistically increased mortality. In the present study, we investigated the effect of seven common environmental contaminants on survival at -6 and 15°C as well as on reproduction at 15°C in the earthworm Dendrobaena octaedra. Three classes of chemicals were considered: Heavy metals (nickel, lead, and mercury), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pyrene and phenanthrene), and pesticides (abamectin and carbendazim). Phenanthrene interacted antagonistically with freezing temperatures, whereas

Triple-dimensional spectroscopy combined with chemometrics for the discrimination of pesticide residues based on ionic liquid-stabilized Mn-ZnS quantum dots and covalent organic frameworks.

Manganese-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) are promising candidates for multi-channel sensing analysis due to their multi-dimensional optical properties. In this study, we integrated amino-silane and ionic liquid co-modified Mn-ZnS QDs and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) into optosensing nanoparticles to provide triple-dimensional optical response signals and combined them with chemometrics for the analysis of multiple pesticide residues. Through the exploration and optimization of a series of conditions, fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence, and ultraviolet-visible co

Effects of endosulfan, thiamethoxam, and indoxacarb in combination with atrazine on multi-biomarkers in Gammarus kischineffensis.

Studies addressing the toxicity of pesticides towards non-target organisms focus on the median lethal concentration and biochemical response of individual pesticides. However, when determining environmental risks, it is important to test the combined effects of pesticides, such as insecticides and herbicides, which are frequently used together in agricultural areas. Here we aimed to investigate the toxic effects of the combined use of the herbicide atrazine and the insecticides, endosulfan, indoxacarb, and thiamethoxam on Gammarus kischineffensis. To do this, we tested the activities of oxidat

Chemical mixtures of pesticides: A review of the recent findings with the zebrafish model.

The presence of pesticide mixtures in the aquatic environment is widely recognized as a cause for concern, given their inherent toxicity and the possibility of additive or synergistic interactions that may amplify the ecological risk. In this review, we focus on the use of zebrafish (Danio rerio), a vertebrate model widely used in biological research as well as in ecotoxicology assessment. The aim of this work is to critically investigate the recent findings on pesticide mixture toxicity published between 2020 and 2024, with studies systematically collected from Embase, PubMed Medline, Google

Synergistic effects of botanical curcumin-induced programmed cell death on the management of Spodoptera litura Fabricius with avermectin.

Chemical pesticides and adjuvants have caused many negative effects. Botanical compounds provide solutions for the development of environment friendly pesticides and the management of increasing pest resistance. Curcumin, a natural polyphenol, showed synergistic effects on avermectin upon the destructive agricultural pest, Spodoptera litura. However, the botanical synergist and its relevant mechanisms remain unclear. In the article, curcumin significantly enhanced the growth inhibition and midgut structural damage of avermectin on the larvae of S. litura, and the synergistic effects were confi

Detection of the A302S Rdl mutation in fipronil bait-selected strains of the German cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae).

Extensive usage and heavy reliance on insecticides have led to the development of insecticide resistance in the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). Six field-collected strains of B. germanica from Singapore were used to investigate resistance to fipronil and dieldrin. The three strains (Boat Quay, Cavenagh Road, and Ghimmoh Road) with greatest resistance to fipronil were subjected to selection with fipronil bait up to the F5 generation. Synergism assay and molecular detection of a target site mutation were used to elucidate the mechanism of fipronil resistance in these strains. With th

Do Piperonyl Butoxide Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets Provide Additional Protection Against Malaria Infections Compared with Conventional Nets in an Operational Setting in Western Kenya?

Malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa has stagnated despite widespread adoption of control measures such as long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Progress has stalled, in part, because of pyrethroid insecticide resistance, driving the need for retooling to increase the effectiveness of bed nets. Consequently, LLINs have been treated with the chemical synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). Piperonyl butoxide LLINs have been shown to be efficacious in controlled settings; however, their effectiveness in real-world settings warrants investigation. In Bungoma County, Western Kenya, a cohort of 768

Effects of commonly used pesticides and their mixtures on the upper airway epithelium using porcine organoid-derived models.

Airborne pesticide contamination can result in widespread respiratory exposure particularly among agricultural workers, yet its impact on respiratory health remains poorly understood. In this study, we assessed the effects of ten commonly used pesticides and the synergist piperonyl butoxide, individually and in mixtures, on the viability of porcine proximal airway epithelial organoid-derived monolayers. Eight of the eleven compounds reduced cell viability, with pendimethalin, glyphosate, cyprodinil and piperonyl butoxide inducing pronounced effects at low concentrations. Mixture exposure cause

Exposure profile of four classes of emerging pesticides in pet dog and cat serum from Wuhan, China.

Emerging pesticides exposure in companion animals remains understudied despite growing concern over environmental contamination and pet health. We quantified 24 emerging pesticides and their metabolites in serum samples from 60 pet dogs and cats in Wuhan, China, using a salting-out assisted acetonitrile extraction method coupled with HPLC-MS/MS. A total of 19 compounds were detected in cats and 16 in dogs, with cats exhibiting significantly higher total pesticide concentrations (median: 4.90 ng/mL) than dogs (3.02 ng/mL). Organophosphates (OPs), particularly chlorpyrifos as indicated by its me

Effects of realistic pesticide mixtures on the springtail Folsomia candida.

The application of multiple pesticides over the last decades has resulted in their frequent and in some cases long-term presence in soils as complex mixtures. This work assessed the toxicity of realistic pesticide mixtures to the springtail Folsomia candida observed in 11 case study sites. Each mixture was composed of five pesticides (as active substances or metabolites), chosen based on their occurrence in soil and expected risk to soil invertebrates. Reproduction tests were conducted in natural agricultural soil, and the springtails were exposed to three concentrations of the selected pestic

Insights into the synergistic mechanism of target resistance: A case study of N. lugens RDL-GABA receptors and fipronil.

It is known that a single mutation exerts moderate resistance to pesticide, while double mutations (DM) cause severe resistance problem through synergistic effect, and even result in failure application of pesticides. However, little is known about how double mutations would synergistically cause much high resistance level. In this work, computational studies were performed on the interaction of fipronil with N. lugens RDL-GABA receptors, to see how single and double mutations changed receptor structure properties and then conferred distinct resistance levels. The A2'S mutation displayed relat

Physiological effects of the interaction between Nosema ceranae and sequential and overlapping exposure to glyphosate and difenoconazole in the honey bee Apis mellifera.

Pathogens and pollutants, such as pesticides, are potential stressors to all living organisms, including honey bees. Herbicides and fungicides are among the most prevalent pesticides in beehive matrices, and their interaction with Nosema ceranae is not well understood. In this study, the interactions between N. ceranae, the herbicide glyphosate and the fungicide difenoconazole were studied under combined sequential and overlapping exposure to the pesticides at a concentration of 0.1 µg/L in food. In the sequential exposure experiment, newly emerged bees were exposed to the herbicide from day 3

Temporal entry of pesticides through pollen into the bee hive and their fate in beeswax.

Honey bees are often exposed to a variety of contaminants, including pesticides from agricultural use. The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal entry of pesticides into the hive by examining the seasonal timing of honey bees bringing pesticide-contaminated pollen into their colonies and the subsequent accumulation of these pesticides in beeswax. Pollen and beeswax samples were collected biweekly from five colonies situated in an agricultural environment in Switzerland. In pollen, 23 pesticides (out of 50) were quantified, including 4 insecticides, 4 herbicides, 12 fungicides, a tr

Machine Learning-Enhanced Three-Channel Cu-Pt Bimetallic Nanozyme Sensor Array for Multi-Class Pesticide Fingerprint Discrimination.

Pesticide residues with diverse toxicities and synergistic effects demand rapid, multiplexed discrimination methods beyond conventional single-analyte assays. Here, we report a machine-learning-enhanced three-channel colorimetric sensor array based on Cu-Pt bimetallic nanozymes for multi-class pesticide fingerprint recognition. The single CuPtBN receptor integrates oxidase-, laccase-, and superoxide dismutase-like activities, generating three orthogonal optical response channels that capture differential inhibition and promotion effects from structurally similar pesticides. By coupling these m

Occurrence and distribution of pesticides in precipitation as revealed by targeted screening through GC-MS/MS.

Facing the tough challenge of precise measurement of ever-increasing numbers of organic contaminants in the environment, there is an urgent need for more reliable and cost-effective methodologies. In this study, we developed and validated a screening method for analysis of over 450 pesticides in precipitation using gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was applied to extract target analytes from precipitation. Using this targeted approach, we managed to detect 123 pesticides with maximum retention ti

A case-control study of breast cancer risk and ambient exposure to pesticides.

UNLABELLED: While the estrogenic properties of certain pesticides have been established, associations between pesticide exposure and risk of breast cancer have been inconsistently observed. We investigated the relation between pesticide exposure and breast cancer risk using methods capable of objectively assessing exposure to specific pesticides occurring decades before diagnosis. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer associated with historic pesticide exposure in California's Central Valley, the most agriculturally productive region

Silicone Wristband Passive Samplers Yield Highly Individualized Pesticide Residue Exposure Profiles.

Monitoring human exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues (PRs) remains crucial for informing public health policies, despite strict regulation of plant protection product and biocide use. We used 72 low-cost silicone wristbands as noninvasive passive samplers to assess cumulative 5-day exposure of 30 individuals to polar PRs. Ethyl acetate extraction and LC-MS/MS analysis were used for the identification of PRs. Thirty-one PRs were detected of which 15 PRs (48%) were detected only in worn wristbands, not in environmental controls. The PRs included 16 fungicides (52%), 8 insecticides (26%
