Morphological studies on Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia.

In general, leishmaniasis is more or less a problem not only in Saudi Arabia but also in all countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. In Saudi Arabia, the most important form is zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCI.). It's main vector, Phlebotomus papatasi has been reported and incriminated by many authors. In this paper, the diagnostic morphology of P. papatasi as compared to other species found in Riyadh as well as the immature stages was given. This is considered as a base line data for studying the ecology and biology of P. papatasi. No doubt the best control strategy is based on co

The influence of moonlight and lunar periodicity on the efficacy of CDC light trap in sampling Phlebotomus (Larroussius) orientalis Parrot, 1936 and other Phlebotomus sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus orientalis is the main sandfly vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the north and northwest of Ethiopia. CDC light traps and sticky traps are commonly used for monitoring sandfly populations. However, their trapping efficiency is greatly influenced by various environmental factors including moonlight and lunar periodicity. In view of that, the current study assessed the effect of moonlight and lunar periodicity on the performance of light traps in collecting P. orientalis. METHODS: Trapping of P. orientalis and other Phlebotomus spp. was conducted for 7 months between D

Immune response profiles from humans experimentally exposed to Phlebotomus duboscqi bites.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a neglected vector-borne parasitic disease prevalent in 92 countries with approximately one million new infections annually. Interactions between vector saliva and the human host alter the response to infection and outcome of disease. METHODS: To characterize the human immunological responses developed against saliva of Phlebotomus duboscqi, a Leishmania major (L. major) vector, we repeatedly exposed the arms of 14 healthy U.S volunteers to uninfected P. duboscqi bites. Blood was collected a week after each exposure and used to assess total IgG antibod

Acute meningitis owing to phlebotomus fever Toscana virus imported to France.

Acute lymphocytic meningitis, seen in France in summer, is often due to enteroviruses. Arboviruses as West Nile and tick-borne encephalitis do exist in Europe, but other viruses are rarely considered in patients unless they have had recent tropical travel. Toscana virus infection, which is endemic, especially in Italy,1-3 has been documented in some European travelers returning from Italy,4-6 but surprisingly was not documented in France until recently.7 We report a case of meningitis caused by Toscana virus imported to France.

Cytoplasmic polyhedrosis viruses in Phlebotomus papatasi inhibit development of Leishmania major.

Cytoplasmic polyhedrosis viruses (CPV's) were observed in wild-caught and laboratory-reared Phlebotomus papatasi. Chronic CPV pathology of the midgut, characterized by structural aberrations in the epithelium and the peritrophic membrane, interfered with blood digestion and rendered the sand flies refractory to Leishmania major infections. Rates of natural and artificial L. major infections were inversely correlated to the incidence of CPV infections. The interaction between viruses and protozoan parasites in an insect host is of basic biological interest and in this case may be of significanc

Distribution and Seasonal Variation of Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia Sand Fly Populations in Bhutan.

Leishmaniasis is considered one of the neglected tropical diseases in the world. Although Bhutan is a member of the visceral leishmaniasis elimination consortium in South Asia, not much attention has been accorded to the disease because of its low incidence. The vector that transmits Leishmania remains poorly understood. In this backdrop, sand-fly surveys were regularly conducted at multiple sites where leishmaniasis cases have been reported in Bhutan. Collections were made using CDC light traps and cattle-baited net traps in 15 villages from February 2019 to May 2022. Six species of Phlebotom

Descriptive and Geometric Morphometry of the Wings of Phlebotomus sergenti Populations in Central Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus sergenti, the proven vector of Leishmania tropica, the causative agent of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, is widely distributed in Morocco. Previous works using molecular markers (Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 rDNA and Cytochrome B mtDNA) hypothesized the existence of multiple closely related populations of sand fly species (cryptic species) that would exhibit distinct vectorial capacities. This work studies morphotypic diversity using traditional and geometric morphometry analyses carried out on Ph. sergenti's wings from central Morocco, where active L. tropica

Courtship behaviour of Phlebotomus papatasi the sand fly vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi is an Old World vector of Leishmania major, the etiologic agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. This study describes the courtship behaviour of P. papatasi and compares it with that of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the New World vector of visceral leishmaniasis. Understanding the details of courtship behaviour in P. papatasi may help us to understand the role of sex pheromones in this important vector. RESULTS: P. papatasi courtship was found to start with the female touching the male, leading him to begin abdomen bending and wing flapping. Followin

A taxonomic reassessment of the Phlebotomus argentipes species complex (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

The taxonomic status of the sand fly Phlebotomus (Euphlebotomus) argentipes Annandale & Brunette 1908, which transmits Leishmania (Leishmania) donovani (Laveran & Mesnil 1903) in southern Asia, is reassessed, because variation in morphology, behavior, and distribution suggests it to be a complex of sibling species. The putative complex is composed of the nominotypical member Phlebotomus argentipes sensu stricto, Phlebotomus annandalei Sinton 1923 status revived and Phlebotomus glaucus Mitra & Roy 1953 new status. An allolectotype is designated for the female of P. argentipes as well as neotype

Natural infection of the sand fly Phlebotomus kazeruni by Trypanosoma species in Pakistan.

The natural infection of phlebotomine sand flies by Leishmania parasites was surveyed in a desert area of Pakistan where cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic. Out of 220 female sand flies dissected, one sand fly, Phlebotomus kazeruni, was positive for flagellates in the hindgut. Analyses of cytochrome b (cyt b), glycosomal glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH) and small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene sequences identified the parasite as a Trypanosoma species of probably a reptile or amphibian. This is the first report of phlebotomine sand flies naturally infected with a Trypanos

Occurrence and genetic variability of Phlebotomus papatasi in an urban area of southern Italy.

BACKGROUND: A phlebotomine sand fly was noticed in the second floor of an old building in a highly urbanized area of southern Italy. A short-term entomological survey was carried out in the subsequent weeks to this event, allowing the collection of additional phlebotomine sand flies that were later identified as Phlebotomus papatasi. We assessed the genetic variability among P. papatasi sequences obtained in this study and those available from Italy using a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragment (from cytochrome b gene to NADH1) and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) as genetic markers. The effect of anti-sandfly saliva antibodies on Phlebotomus argentipes and Leishmania donovani.

A study was undertaken to find the effect of repeated bites of the sandfly, Phlebotomus argentipes, on its host as well as on the vector itself. The study also aimed to find the effect of the immune serum on the parasite, Leishmania donovani, naturally transmitted by the vector. The hamster which was exposed to sandfly feeding showed good antibody titre against the sandfly salivary-gland secretion, which indicates that the salivary-gland secretion is immunogenic in nature. The result also revealed that the feeding attraction of the females, which has been expressed as the percentage of engorge

[Eco-epidemiological study of Phlebotomus perniciosus in foci of visceral leishmaniasis in Campania].

An entomological survey was carried out during the sandfly season (June-October) of 1993 in three of the main visceral leishmaniasis (VL) foci of the Campania region of Italy. During the period 1989-1993, 39 VL cases were recorded in the three foci: 19 in Maddaloni, 14 in Ercolano and 6 in Ischia. For each focus, collecting stations representative of sandfly habitats (domestic, peri-domestic and sylvatic) located in urban, peri-urban and rural areas were selected for the sandfly investigation. Three monthly captures by means of sticky traps (20 x 20 cm) were carried out in each station. A tota

Host feeding preference of Phlebotomus guggisbergi, a vector of Leishmania tropica in Kenya.

Recently the sandfly Phlebotomus guggisbergi was found to be a vector of Leishmania tropica causing cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Laikipia focus, Kenya, but extensive searches have shed no light on the identity of the rural reservoir host(s). In order to discover more about the biology of the vector, a host feeding preference study was conducted on wild sandflies in their natural cave environment over a 6-month period. Solid state Army miniature (SSAM) traps, without light bulb, were suspended over cages with potential hosts or an empty cage control. The animals tested included sheep, goat, d

Expression of Phlebotomus papatasi Salivary Protein 15 (PpSP15) in COS-7 Cells.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical infection and the most prevalent vector-borne disease in Iran. There is no approved human vaccine and current treatments are restricted; some drugs are expensive and have notable side effects. Therefore, the need for the development of a safe and effective vaccine that can be produced at a low cost remains urgent. It has been shown that vaccinating animals with salivary gland homogenate or saliva components of sand flies protected against Leishmania infection. In this study, we aimed to prepare a mammalian expression vector encod
