Dissecting the molecular landscape of exercise-mediated protection against fructose-induced cardiac dysfunction: Evidence from animal models.

Excessive fructose consumption, mainly driven by industrial sweeteners, combined with increasingly sedentary lifestyles, has contributed substantially to the global rise in cardiometabolic diseases. Although the evolutionary balance between fructose intake and energy expenditure has been disrupted, it may be restored through targeted lifestyle interventions. This review examines the cardioprotective potential of physical exercise in the context of high fructose intake. Owing to the limited number of human studies, we analyzed 30 animal studies identified in PubMed, focusing on underlying cellu

Mind the ramp: Association between early life ramp use and spatial cognition in laying hen pullets.

Ramps facilitate earlier access to complex environments and increase early life voluntary exercise, which may positively affect the cognitive development of chickens. This study focused on quantifying individual differences in ramp use and its impact on spatial cognition of laying hen pullets. Sixteen identical pens were housed with Lohmann Selected Leghorn (LSL) chicks of which eight chicks from each pen were colour marked from one day of age (DoA) to serve as focal birds. We quantified overall ramp use (walk/run, wing-assisted incline running, and jump/fly to and from ramps) by scan sampling

Animal Models of Exercise From Rodents to Pythons.

Acute and chronic animal models of exercise are commonly used in research. Acute exercise testing is used, often in combination with genetic, pharmacological, or other manipulations, to study the impact of these manipulations on the cardiovascular response to exercise and to detect impairments or improvements in cardiovascular function that may not be evident at rest. Chronic exercise conditioning models are used to study the cardiac phenotypic response to regular exercise training and as a platform for discovery of novel pathways mediating cardiovascular benefits conferred by exercise conditi

Cannabidiol reshapes the gut microbiome to promote endurance exercise in mice.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a nonpsychoactive compound from Cannabis, has various bioactive functions in humans and animals. Evidence suggests that CBD promotes muscle injury recovery in athletes, but whether and how CBD improves endurance performance remains unclear. Here we investigated the effects of CBD treatment on exercise performance in mice and assessed whether this effect involves the gut microbiome. CBD administration significantly increased treadmill running performance in mice, accompanied by an increase in oxidative myofiber composition. CBD also increased mitochondrial biogenesis and the

Effect of a Collar and Harness on Intraocular Pressure and Respiration Rate of Brachycephalic and Dolichocephalic Dogs.

BACKGROUND: Dogs are a popular pet in many countries, and for them to gain appropriate exercise, many owners opt to walk them on a leash. Despite health and welfare concerns, brachycephalic breeds remain common as pets, with limited research existing that investigates the best restraint type for these animals. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test the effect of a collar and harness during stationary and exercise conditions on the intra-ocular pressure (IOP) and respiration rate (RR) of brachycephalic and dolichocephalic dogs. METHODS: A total of 24 healthy dogs, both brachycephalic and dolich

Heterogeneity of intrapleural pressures during exercise.

We determined whether the caudodorsal region of the intrapleural space in exercising horses experiences larger pressure fluctuations than other regions and whether systematic phase-shifting of peak intrapleural pressures along the length of the thorax suggests the existence of locomotor-induced intrapleural pressure waves. We utilised percutaneous introducers and solid-state pressure-tip transducers implanted along the dorsal aspect of the thorax, mid-thorax or oesophagus to measure regional intrapleural pressures while 3 horses galloped on a flat treadmill at 13-14 m/s, then recorded pressure

Quantitative study of articular cartilage and subchondral bone remodeling in the knee joint of dogs after strenuous running training.

All tissues of the joint are affected in some way in osteoarthritis because the joint is an interactively functioning unit. Our goal was to investigate the combined responses of articular cartilage and subchondral bone to altered loading conditions to improve our understanding of the physiology of these two components and, ultimately, the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis. A group of 20 female beagle dogs were divided pairwise into runners (n = 10) and controls (n = 10). The running training on a treadmill started at the age of 15 weeks, and during the following 40 weeks the running distance w

Work-heat tolerance in endurance-trained rats.

The purpose of this study was to determine if training in a cool (23 degrees C) environment would alter the potential for mortality or for tissue damage (as indicated by serum transaminase concentrations) during a work-heat tolerance test (WHTT) to exhaustion. Twenty-nine male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained (T) on a motorized treadmill for 6 wk, while 34 control animals of similar weight remained sedentary (S). Tissue damage among survivors 24 h following the WHTT and percent mortality were the same in both groups; however, T survivors 1) continued the test 44% longer (P less than 0.05), 2)

Comparison of hippocampal interleukin-6 immunoreactivity after exhaustive exercise in both exercise-trained and untrained rats.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Exhaustive exercise is a strong stress factor and can impact cytokine production in the brain. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is produced in greater amounts than any other cytokine in response to exercise, and its effects are closely related to both exercise duration and intensity. In this study, we measured the differences between the amount of IL-6 reactivity of the hippocampus after an exhaustive session ofrunning in long-term exercise-trained and untrained rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The exercise-trained group ran on a treadmill for 12 weeks. Both groups were forced to run until ex

Aerobic Exercise Promotes Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Ameliorates Cognitive Dysfunction Induced by Unilateral Labyrinthectomy.

AIMS: Vestibular dysfunction is strongly linked to cognitive impairment and dementia risk, yet its underlying mechanisms remain unclear, hindering treatment development. As a primary physical therapy intervention, aerobic exercise improves cognitive dysfunction. Thus, we investigated its potential to reverse cognitive deficits after vestibular dysfunction and explored the neurobiological mechanisms involved. METHODS: Behavioral experiments were conducted to assess the cognitive impairment induced by unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL). Immunofluorescence staining was performed to assess neural st

Maximal Lactate Steady State Prediction Using Two DMAX Methods in Horses Subjected to Treadmill-Graded Exercise Test.

Maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) and its predictive thresholds, including the lactate threshold (LT), are widely used to estimate endurance capacity, prescribe training, and assess the effects of training. The human literature identified approximately twenty-five methods to predict the MLSS. This communication compares the concordance between the two DMAX methods and the MLSS. Under laboratory conditions, ten teaching horses underwent a submaximal graded exercise test (GXT) on a treadmill to obtain their lactate-velocity curves (LVC). They performed three to five 30-min continuous running s

Optimal Exercise Intensity for Enhancing Sperm Parameters: A Network Meta-Analysis of Rodent Studies.

Exercise training as a potential intervention to improve male reproductive health, its efficacy appears to be contingent on exercise intensity. However, the optimal training intensity remains poorly defined. Hence, this study aimed to identify the optimal exercise intensity for improving sperm parameters through network meta-analysis of rodent studies. The comprehensive search across eight databases ultimately identified 35 eligible studies, coving four different exercises: low-intensity continuous training (LICT), moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), high-intensity continuous traini

Quantifying Serum Total Lipids and Tryptophan Concentrations by Raman Spectroscopy During Standardized Obstacle Course in Horses.

Raman spectroscopy is an inelastic light-scattering phenomenon that provides vibrational spectrum that contains information relative to chemical bonds and symmetry of a specific molecule, allowing the quali-quantitative simultaneous determination of several components in the biological fluids. Raman spectroscopy measurement returns a spectrum over a wavenumber range constituted by several bands representing biomarkers according to investigated biological matrices. In literature, it has been reported that at the frequencies inside the (1,300-1,360) cm-1 total lipids, and tryptophan have been id
