Sap-sucking insects often transmit plant viruses but also carry insect viruses, which infect insects but not plants. The impact of such insect viruses on insect host biology and ecology is largely unknown. Here, we identified a novel insect-specific virus carried by brown citrus aphid (Aphis citricidus), which we tentatively named Aphis citricidus picornavirus (AcPV). Phylogenetic analysis discovered a monophyletic cluster with AcPV and other unassigned viruses, suggesting that these viruses represent a new family in order Picornavirales. Systemic infection with AcPV triggered aphid antiviral

Orchidaceae is one of the largest plant families and includes species of major ornamental, economic, and ecological importance. Despite this diversity, the viruses associated with orchids remain poorly characterized. The growing availability of high-throughput sequencing data offers new opportunities to explore plant virus diversity across broad taxonomic scales. Here, we conducted a large-scale meta-analysis of orchid-associated viruses by reanalyzing 2,789 publicly available RNA-seq data sets representing 41 genera across 18 subtribes and five subfamilies. We identified sequences correspondi

Nepoviruses supplied seminal landmarks to the historical trail of plant virology. Among the first agriculturally relevant viruses recognized in the late 1920s and among the first plant viruses officially classified in the early 1970s, nepoviruses also comprise the first species for which a soil-borne ectoparasitic nematode vector was identified. Early research on nepoviruses shed light on the genome structure and expression, biological properties of the two genomic RNAs, and mode of transmission. In recent years, research on nepoviruses enjoyed an extraordinary renaissance. This resurgence pro

Aphids (order Hemiptera) are important insect pests of crops and are also vectors of many plant viruses. However, little is known about aphid-infecting viruses, particularly their diversity and relationship to plant viruses. To investigate the aphid viromes, we performed deep sequencing analyses of the aphid transcriptomes from infested barley plants in a field in Japan. We discovered virus-like sequences related to nege/kita-, flavi-, tombus-, phenui-, mononega-, narna-, chryso-, partiti-, and luteoviruses. Using RT-PCR and sequence analyses, we determined almost complete sequences of seven n

Circular replication-associated protein encoding single stranded (CRESS) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) viruses have emerged to become one of the largest and most devastating groups of crops-infecting viruses in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In West Africa, renewed outbreaks of disease-like symptoms in the field have prompted surveys that revealed the circulation of multiple CRESS DNA virus species. Recognizing that plant viral diseases may be best understood at the ecosystem scale, we conducted a survey of plant-associated CRESS DNA virus communities in two localities of Burkina

Plant viruses depend on insect vectors for dissemination in complex agroecosystems and often exploit plant and insect physiology to enhance transmission. This review synthesizes recent advances in understanding cross-kingdom exchange of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as a central mechanism shaping plant-virus-vector interactions and broader agroecosystem dynamics. ncRNAs are exchanged among plants, insect vectors, and viruses via the phloem, insect saliva, and external plant surfaces through exudates. These molecules can suppress plant antiviral and anti-insect plant responses, modulate vector biolo

With the advance of metatranscriptomic sequencing, an increasing number of symbiotic viruses have been recognized in insects. These insect symbiotic viruses not only modulate key aspects of insect biology, including physiology, fecundity, development, and behavior, but also influence the vector competence of arthropods for transmitting arboviruses. The majority of such vectors belong to the orders Hemiptera and Diptera, which transmit a wide spectrum of plant and animal arboviruses. Although insect symbiotic viruses usually replicate exclusively within insect cells, several symbiotic viruses h

Lettuce big-vein disease (LBVD) is a major disease affecting lettuce cultivation worldwide. LBVD is caused by two unrelated negative-stranded RNA viruses, Mirafiori lettuce big-vein virus (MiLBVV; Ophiovirus mirafioriense; Aspiviridae) and lettuce big-vein associated virus (LBVaV; Varicosavirus lactucae; Rhabdoviridae), both vectored by the soilborne fungus Olpidium virulentus. Despite extensive research, a synergistic effect between the two viruses has not been observed, whereas both viruses individually have been suggested to be the causal agent for the disease. By performing lettuce reinfec

With emerging viruses and drug resistance on the rise, the discovery and development of innovative antiviral substances and agents are necessary for the effective treatment and control of viral outbreaks. Surrogate viruses are safer alternatives used in research to mimic dangerous or hard-to-culture viruses. They enable efficient, ethical, and cost-effective screening of antiviral compounds. In this study, we used a recombinant viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (rVHSV) expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein as a surrogate for RNA viruses for the high-throughput screening of antiviral a

Hemipteran insects transmit viruses when infesting plants, during which vectors activate salicylic acid (SA)-regulated antiviral defenses. How vector-borne plant viruses circumvent these antiviral defenses is largely unexplored. During co-infections of begomoviruses and betasatellites in plants, betasatellite-encoded βC1 proteins interfere with SA signaling and reduce the activation of antiviral resistance. βC1 inhibits SA-induced degradation of NbNPR3 (Nicotiana benthamiana nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes 3), a negative regulator of SA signaling. βC1 does not bind directly to NbNPR

Dependent on the excretion pattern, wastewater monitoring of viruses can be a valuable approach to characterizing their circulation in the human population. Using polyethylene glycol precipitation and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, the occurrence of RNA of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses A/B in the raw wastewater of two treatment plants in Germany between January and May 2022 was investigated. Due to the relatively high incidence in both exposal areas (plant 1 and plant 2), SARS-CoV-2-specific RNA was determined in all 273 composite samples analyzed (concentration of E gene: 1.3 × 10

The management of hand-foot-and-mouth disease(HFMD) epidemic is difficult due to the frequent emergence of non-EV71 and non-CVA16 enteroviruses and some cases testing negative for HFMD-associated causative agents. To clarify the virus spectrum of mild and severe HFMD, a comprehensive virome analysis of 238 samples was performed using next-generation sequencing (NGS). The data revealed total thirteen mammalian- and plant- virus families and diverse viral populations including enteroviruses, common respiratory viruses, diarrhea-related viruses, plant viruses and anelloviruses. Control of hazardous indoor particles using plants has attracted interest due to the increasing worldwide air pollution and spread of pandemic-causing viruses. However, the interaction between human pathogenic viruses (HPVs) and live plants has not been examined largely due to issues in detecting tiny amounts of infectious viruses in a carrier (such as an aerosol) and the lack of suitable examination methods. In this study, as a novel evaluation method, the effect of submerged leaves of live plants on HPVs in water was examined, using the H1N1 influenza virus as a model. Selected plant foliage

A drinking-water treatment plant with high concentrations of trihalomethanes in its finished water and large numbers of viruses in its source water was located. This plant was used to study the effect of an alteration in the point of chlorination from the first to last step of water treatment on the biological and chemical qualities of its finished water. This alteration caused some reduction in trihalomethane production, but trihalomethane concentrations still exceeded the prescribed limit of 100 micrograms/liter. No viruses or bacterial indicators were ever isolated from the finished water o

Aphids transmit viruses and are destructive crop pests1. Plants that have been attacked by aphids release volatile compounds to elicit airborne defence (AD) in neighbouring plants2-5. However, the mechanism underlying AD is unclear. Here we reveal that methyl-salicylate (MeSA), salicylic acid-binding protein-2 (SABP2), the transcription factor NAC2 and salicylic acid-carboxylmethyltransferase-1 (SAMT1) form a signalling circuit to mediate AD against aphids and viruses. Airborne MeSA is perceived and converted into salicylic acid by SABP2 in neighbouring plants. Salicylic acid then causes a sig

Climatic changes are heavily affecting the sustainability of vegetable crops crucial for food supply worldwide, mainly in subtropical countries. One of the main threats to food security is the spread of diseases caused by plant viruses, favored by irregular rains and extreme temperatures, which reduce crop yield and quality. During a preliminary field survey carried out in two provinces of Angola in 2024, a few symptomatic plants of tomato, habanero pepper, common bean and a wild weed were sampled. These plants generally showed dwarfing, yellowing and leaf curl and were submitted to high-throu

Pepper (Capsicum spp.) is an economically valuable crop worldwide including in the United States due to its nutritional benefits in human health and widespread use as a spice or vegetable. Although numerous viruses have been reported infecting peppers in the USA, little is known about the diversity and distribution of pepper-infecting viruses in Oklahoma. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a comprehensive pepper virome study to identify viruses infecting pepper and their incidence across six different counties in Oklahoma. A total of 310 plant samples including pepper and other potent

Melon severe mosaic virus (MSMV; Orthotospovirus melotessellati) was identified in a pumpkin plant collected in Mississippi during the fall of 2022; the plant exhibited mosaic symptoms, an alligator-skin pattern, and frilly edges on leaves, symptoms typical of cucurbit plants infected with widely prevalent cucurbit-infecting viruses in the United States. High-throughput sequencing was used for virus identification after routine assays for five widely prevalent mosaic-inducing viruses were negative. Screening of stored nucleic acid extracts from 53 additional cucurbit plants collected from Miss

Plant virus-based nanoparticles (PVNs) are self-assembled capsid proteins of plant viruses, and can be virus-like nanoparticles (VLPs) or virus nanoparticles (VNPs). Plant viruses showing helical capsid symmetry are used as a versatile platform for the presentation of multiple copies of well-arrayed immunogenic antigens of various disease pathogens. Helical PVNs are non-infectious, biocompatible, and naturally immunogenic, and thus, they are suitable antigen carriers for vaccine production and can trigger humoral and/or cellular immune responses. Furthermore, recombinant PVNs as vaccines and a
