Toxicity of muscimol and ibotenic acid containing mushrooms reported to a regional poison control center from 2002-2016.

BACKGROUND: Amanita muscaria (AM) and A. pantherina (AP) contain ibotenic acid and muscimol and may cause both excitatory and sedating symptoms. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are not classically described but have been reported. There are relatively few reported cases of poisoning with these mushrooms in North America. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of ingestions of ibotenic acid and muscimol containing mushrooms reported to a United States regional poison center from 2002-2016. Cases were included if identification was made by a mycologist or if AM was clearly described. RESULTS:

Evaluating Poison Control Center Telemedicine Support for Health Care Facilities in Managing Overdose and Suicide During COVID-19.

Background: We aimed to assess differences in the impact of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) on urban and rural health care facility (HCF) management of intentional overdoses and self-harm using telemedicine consultation from poison control centers (PCCs). Methods: We utilized a mixed-methods, explanatory study design of poison centers in the United States. The primary exposures were geography (urban vs. rural HCFs) and time (the pre-COVID-19 PHE [January 1, 2018-March 10, 2020] vs. COVID-19 PHE [March 11, 2020-December 31, 2022]). The primary outcomes were patient disposition: admis

Illicit Fentanyl Exposures in Cats and Dogs Reported to a North American Veterinary Poison Control Center From 2019 to 2023.

OBJECTIVES: As a prominent concern for addiction medicine, illicit fentanyl and its analogues have been implicated in numerous poisonings among people. Many households in Canada and the United States include cats or dogs as pets who may be exposed to substances such as fentanyl. METHODS: This case-series examined data from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Poison Control, a 24-hour call center for animal poison-related emergencies. Descriptive statistics were used on records in which cats or dogs had a reported exposure to illicit fentanyl between 2019 and 2023.

A review of 29 incidents involving 4-aminopyridine in non-target species reported to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

4-Aminopyridine (4-AP) is an avicide used in products that are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to control populations of various birds. Pharmaceutical 4-AP is also used in humans to treat neural and muscular dysfunctions associated with multiple sclerosis. Although strict restrictions for its use are in place, exposures to 4-AP bait by non-target species still occur. Twenty-nine exposures of 4-AP bait involving non-target species were identified and retrieved from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center medical record database. Canines were the most commonly exposed (86 %)

Epidemiology of cannabidiol related cases reported in the National Poison Data System - 2019-2020.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabidiol (CBD) has become a popular supplement in consumer products in recent years, resulting in part from normalization of the cultivation of low THC cannabis in 2018. However, the actual content of CBD-labeled products is frequently uncertain, as oversight of such products is minimal. To date, there is little pragmatic knowledge regarding exposures to products labeled as containing CBD. METHODS: Cases reported to Poison Control Centers from April 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020, the first year in which CBD was identified uniquely as a substance in the National Poison Data Syste

Assessment of barriers to utilization of poison centers by Hispanic/Latino populations.

Previous research suggests that Spanish-speaking parents and residents of areas with large Hispanic and Latino populations are likely to underutilize the assistance that is available through poison control centers (PCCs). In order to examine any real and perceived barriers to utilization of the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIES), the only poison control center in the state, an intercept survey was conducted with self-identified Hispanics/Latinos at Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) centers and in nearby grocery stores, bus stops, and public laundromats. Only 38% of the
