Content Validation of a Political Competence Scale in Graduate Nursing Education.

AIM: To examine the content validity of an adapted Political Competence Scale for Nurses (PCS-N) for use in graduate nursing education. BACKGROUND: Instruments to evaluate political competence as a graduate-level educational outcome remain limited. METHOD: Experts rated item relevance using a four-point scale (1 = not relevant to 4 = highly relevant). Scale-level indices were calculated using the average method (S-CVI/Ave). RESULTS: All subscales demonstrated strong content validity, with S-CVI/Ave values ranging from 0.89 to 0.95. Mean item-level content validity index values were 0.89 for

"Wife, widow, or warrior?": Media representation of women politicians in Southern Africa.

A growing body of literature recognises the media's role in shaping political identities and leadership legitimacy. Studies suggest that women presidential candidates in post-colonial Southern Africa are often framed through historical, cultural, and gendered archetypes that limit their political agency. Drawing on feminist media theory, framing theory, and Critical Language Awareness (CLA), this study analyses how media language constructs women presidential aspirants as political wives, widows continuing male legacies, or warriors fighting the system. The study employs content analysis of 12

The Perfect Storm: Applying the Multiple Streams Framework to Understand the Adoption of a WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control-Based Policy in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to document how Mexico adopted a WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)-based national tobacco control law. METHODS: We analyzed publicly available documents and interviewed 14 key stakeholders. We applied the Multiple Streams Framework (MSF) to analyze these findings. RESULTS: Previous attempts to approve comprehensive FCTC-based initiatives failed due to a lack of political will, the tobacco industry's close connections to policymakers, and a lack of health advocacy coordination. Applying the MSF reveals increased attention towards collecti

Exploring Associations Between WaSH-Related Health Outcomes and Terrorist Activities in the Sahel: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: The G5 Sahel countries have faced political instability and terrorist activities for over a decade. With the regional lack of water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH), there is an increased risk of adverse health outcomes. This scoping review aims to document WaSH-related health outcomes associated with terrorist activities, identify gaps in the humanitarian and political response and propose actionable recommendations to address them. METHODS: We followed the PRISMA standards, including literature from PubMed and Web of Science. Country-specific timeframes for terrorist activities we

Building peace from scratch: some theoretical and technological aspects.

A peace-building process is based on activity, acceptance, understanding of political reality, communication, and empowerment. Acceptance means accepting everybody as he or she is and let each know it. This is at the heart of peace work, it is the prerequisite for effective communication, and includes accepting other even in cases of severe disagreement. Peace work requires both an understanding of political reality and the expression of one's own political opinion. Acceptance and the expression of political opinion are not at variance but complementary. Combining acceptance and understanding

Layers, cells, and constellations: Jon Henner's Twitter platform as crip activism.

This paper examines the role of Jon Henner's Twitter presence (@jmhenner) as a form of crip activism, exploring how he used the platform to challenge normative ideologies and advocate for justice. Henner's tweets served as a medium for public scholarship, connecting many communities and fostering dialogues on the intersection of linguistics, disability, and deaf education. His work, deeply personal and politically engaged, illustrates the potential of social media as a tool for activism and cross-community building. In this paper, we combine historical documentation, ethnopoetics, and personal

Put rights at the centre of person- and people-centred HIV prevention.

INTRODUCTION: "Person-centred" and "people-centred" HIV prevention programmes both seek to scale up access to HIV prevention services. A "person-centred" approach presents a vision of a client with agency in decision-making, engaged and empowered, working with providers in a process that is not disease-centric but focused on addressing, holistically, a client's needs. A "people-centred" approach recognizes the broader role of family and community, as well as the influence of the political and legal environment as barriers or facilitators to HIV services. In both cases, human rights are a criti

The alcohol industry, the tobacco industry, and excise taxes in the US 1986-89: new insights from the tobacco documents.

BACKGROUND: The UCSF Industry Documents Library has provided public health researchers with key insights into the organization of political activities in the tobacco industry. Much less is known about the alcohol industry. In the US, there is some existing evidence of cooperation between the two industries, particularly in areas where there are mutual interests and/or policy goals at stake. Efforts to raise excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol products are one such example. METHODS: We systematically searched the UCSF Industry Documents Library for data on alcohol industry actors and their pol

[Patients with Psychotherapy Experience in the GDR - Findings of an Interview Study on the Pre-Therapeutic Phase].

This study captures and contextualizes experiences of former patients treated in GDR psychotherapy, focusing on the pre-therapeutic phase, triggers, access, expectations, and political attitudes. It addresses a research gap on the patient perspective.Semi-structured interviews with 15 individuals treated between 1974-1989 were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Categories included triggers, access pathways, expectations, political attitudes, motivations for change, and gender differences. The most frequently reported reason for seeking psychotherapy was current distress, partly in com

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread Playing God with Vancouver's Supervised Injection Facility in the political borderland.

Healthcare does not exist in a social vacuum. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the case of people living with active addiction who are treated as social lepers: feared, despised and socially banished from the wider human family. People with addictions, and their families, fight for survival in the moral borderland between two competing understandings of their condition. According to one understanding, addiction is a concern for the criminal justice system while according to the other it is primarily a population health issue. In one orientation, addicts are troublesome offenders, while in

How Academic Medicine Can Amplify Truth Amid the Noise of Misinformation, Inaccuracies, and Lies.

Inaccurate statements and lies from public figures and political and government leaders have the power to exacerbate dangerous upheavals in our political, health care, and social environments. The widespread misinformation, inaccuracies, and lies about the COVID-19 pandemic (about the origin of the virus, the severity of illness, vaccination, and "cures," to name a few) illustrate the potentially disastrous consequences of false information. Academic medicine must recognize the dangers of such lies and inaccuracies, particularly those related to health, and must understand their sources in tra

All Smiles are Not Created Equal: Morphology and Timing of Smiles Perceived as Amused, Polite, and Embarrassed/Nervous.

We investigated the correspondence between perceived meanings of smiles and their morphological and dynamic characteristics. Morphological characteristics included co-activation of Orbicularis oculi (AU 6), smile controls, mouth opening, amplitude, and asymmetry of amplitude. Dynamic characteristics included duration, onset and offset velocity, asymmetry of velocity, and head movements. Smile characteristics were measured using the Facial Action Coding System (Ekman, Friesen, & Hager, 2002) and Automated Facial Image Analysis (Cohn & Kanade, 2007). Observers judged 122 smiles as amused, embarr

Participation Beyond Compliance: Who Tried to Influence Other People's Vaccination Behaviour During the COVID-19 Crisis?

In this paper, we call for more attention to be paid to what we call ordinary contributions to public health policies: the propensity of ordinary citizens to actively influence others to follow or reject a health policy. Shifting the focus from personal compliance to active participation (i.e., ordinary contribution) raises distinct questions pertaining to self-empowerment, personal network composition and the public denunciation of antivaccinationism. We draw on a survey conducted during the summer of 2022 among a representative sample of the French public (n = 4004) to understand what made s

Continuing bonds, society, and human experience: family dead, hostile dead, political dead.

In most times and places, the focus of continuing bonds is on the well-being and activity of the dead that are linked to the well-being and activity of the living. In this article we describe continuing bonds across cultures by focusing on the dead. Three relationships between the living and the dead organize our thinking. First, the family dead in which living and dead offer help to each other. Second, the hostile dead that threaten the well being of the living. Third, the political dead in which the living enlisting the dead in political conflicts, and the dead motivate the living to battle

Moving from advocacy to activism? The fourth WHO global forum on human resources for health and implications for dentistry.

As we debate shaping the future oral health workforce within the UK, to meet the needs of current and future populations, it is helpful to take an international perspective on this very important issue. Globally, there is a strong recognition that human resources for health (HRH) are fundamentally important to deliver effective care, accessible to all people. This paper reviews the outcome of the fourth global forum held by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Dublin which highlighted the urgency for action. The main objectives of the forum were to advance the implementation of (i) the WHO G

Engaging physical activity policymakers.

Evidence for the health benefits of physical activity is overwhelming: physical activity is protective against type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, depression, falls in older adults, and many other adverse health outcomes. Research also suggests that widespread physical inactivity exacts a heavy toll on the US economy, as well as on individual health. Researchers have estimated that those who are physically inactive impose greater costs on society than do smokers or problem drinkers. Increasing rates of physical activity may therefore be one

The politics of dependency estimates: Social Security Board statistics, 1935-1939.

State theorists maintain that Social Security Board (SSB) bureaucrats managed the evolution of public welfare. Institutional politics theory more readily accepts the influences of political interest groups. SSB archival records offer an opportunity to contrast these models and explore the early measurement of old age dependency. In reports designed to protect the 1935 Social Security Act, SSB staff exaggerated the extent of dependency among elderly persons. By 1939, Board statistics clearly showed that children were more impoverished than aged persons. SSB leadership did not repudiate prior es

Long-term effect of September 11 on the political behavior of victims' families and neighbors.

This article investigates the long-term effect of September 11, 2001 on the political behaviors of victims' families and neighbors. Relative to comparable individuals, family members and residential neighbors of victims have become--and have stayed--significantly more active in politics in the last 12 years, and they have become more Republican on account of the terrorist attacks. The method used to demonstrate these findings leverages the random nature of the terrorist attack to estimate a causal effect and exploits new techniques to link multiple, individual-level, governmental databases to
