Complete tract excision for complex fistula-in-ano, where the sphincter, is divided is increasingly being followed by immediate sphincter repair. We concluded, by a prospective study conducted on 60 consecutive patients, that this procedure is feasible and safe, and polydioxanone and polyglactin 910 in repair result in a comparable outcome.

Radiation-associated small bowel injury occurs in up to 50% of patients receiving postoperative radiotherapy following pelvic cancer surgery. Mesh of absorbable polyglactin 910 instead of human tissues or nonabsorbable synthetic materials was utilized for retropubic sling procedures in 21 women with urinary stress incontinence. The patients have been observed for a period ranging from 4 to 14 months. 20 of them are continent while there was 1 relapse after 2 months. The postoperative complications were minimal, and there has been no instance of foreign body reaction.

This study examined the performance of unidirectional barbed suture versus polyglactin 910 with respect to vaginal cuff healing in robotic-assisted total laparoscopic hysterectomy (RATLH). Severe gastroesophageal reflux was accomplished in 18 dogs by circular cardiomyectomy. After this intervention a Vicryl scarf was placed around the cardia in 12 dogs. The Vicryl scarf was absorbed within 6 months and in its place remained a scarred tissue. In the follow up gastroesophageal reflux could not be detected by manometry, pH-metry, radiology and endoscopy. In the control group all 6 dogs died within 3 weeks due to complications of gastroesophageal reflux.
