Exposure to parturient cats: a risk factor for acquisition of Q fever in Maritime Canada.

Over a 34-mo period we studied 51 patients with Q fever and 102 control subjects (with various lower-respiratory-tract infections) who were matched for age, sex, and time of onset of infection. By univariate analysis (not adjusted for multiple comparisons), cases differed significantly from controls in the following activities: working on a farm; slaughtering or dressing animals; and contact with cats, cattle, and sheep. The strongest association was with exposure to stillborn kittens--11 of 51 cases vs. none of 102 controls (P less than .00000)--and with exposure to parturient cats (odds rati

Development and implementation of a risk assessment and management program for enzootic bovine leukosis in Atlantic Canada.

Over the past 30 yr, the prevalence of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection has increased in North America, including Atlantic Canada, at both the herd and individual cow levels. This has occurred despite increased awareness of the disease and its deleterious effects and despite implementation of management practices aimed at reducing disease transmission. Our objectives were to identify risk factors associated with the within-herd prevalence of BLV-infected cows by using a risk assessment and management program workbook, as well as to determine the current level of BLV prevalence in the Atla

Epidemiology of spinal muscular atrophy caused by SMN1 deletions in Maritime Canada.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), caused primarily by deletions in SMN1, leads to progressive loss of lower motor neurons. Newborn screening for SMA is under consideration for the Maritime Newborn Screening Program. The incidence of this disease has not been explored in Maritime Canada which includes the provinces of Nova Scotia (NS), New Brunswick (NB), and Prince Edward Island (PEI). In this retrospective chart review, patients were identified from the IWK Clinical Genomics Lab and Maritime Medical Genetics Service databases for SMN1 genetic testing between 2000 and 2020. The incidence of SMA i

solidarity through mail-based participatory visual research: exploring queer and feminist futures through an art, activism and archiving project with 2SLGBTQ+ youth amidst COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a logistical problem to our normal ways of engaging in participatory visual research. Our in-person art, activism and archiving with 2SLGBTQ+ Atlantic Canadian youth pivoted to use distanced engagement strategies that met the demands of the pandemic. We sought to create networks of solidarity while we were apart. Monthly, over the course of a year, we mailed out themed packages of art supplies and directions to fifty-five 2SLGBTQ+ youth situated in the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Participants

Genetic diversity of Streptomyces spp. causing common scab of potato in eastern Canada.

Common scab is an important disease of potato caused by Streptomyces scabies and other closely related species. In this study, the genetic diversity of Streptomyces spp. causing common scab of potato in eastern Canada was for the first time investigated. Forty-one Streptomyces spp. isolates were retrieved from necrotic lesions of potato tubers harvested from different regions of the Canadian provinces New-Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince-Edward-Island. Most isolates were closely related to known pathogenic S. scabies strains on the basis of partial 16S ribosomal (r) RNA and rpoB gene sequence

Two cases of Angiostrongylus vasorum, a cardiopulmonary nematode, in a wild black bear and coyote of Tennessee.

Angiostrongylus vasorum, commonly known as the French heartworm, is a metastrongyloid parasitic nematode that infects wild and domestic canids. In North America, A. vasorum is endemic to the Canadian island of Newfoundland, but has been expanding to new areas including Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and West Virginia (USA). Two cases of A. vasorum are reported from the state of Tennessee. The first case in a black bear (Ursus americanus) and the second case in a coyote (Canis latrans). The black bear was found dead in Sevier County in November of 2022, while the coyote was trapped and euth

Dispersal, adaptation and persistence of H5N1 in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctica.

High pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N1 reached the sub-Antarctic and Antarctica in 2023, subsequently spreading to remote locations within this region where it had devastating impacts on seal, penguin and albatross populations. The threat to marine wildlife over this broad area exemplifies the need to understand H5N1 long-distance dispersal and evolution. We obtained 104 novel viral genomic sequences from samples that we collected at South Georgia, Kerguelen, Crozet, Prince Edward, Falklands/Malvinas Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula in a region spanning 8,000 kilometers. Prevention of pathological gambling: a randomized controlled trial.

Although the gambling industry is expanding rapidly throughout North America and around the world, there are only a few empirically evaluated programs aimed at the prevention of pathological gambling (PG). The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of a new prevention program aimed at PG. The Stop & Think! program was designed to teach at-risk video lottery terminal (VLT) gamblers cognitive restructuring and problem-solving skills that may help to prevent the development of PG. These skills were taught through a variety of methods - including an automated educational presentati

The impact of pain and impaired role performance on distress in persons with cancer.

The observed upward trend in the incidence of many cancers is expected to continue for the next 20 years despite monumental basic research efforts. There are interpersonal and intrapsychic complications associated with cancer and its treatment leading to considerable distress which, in extreme cases, becomes clinical depression and anxiety. Pain and impaired role performance have been cited as being important sources of distress in people with cancer. This paper presents data from a community sample of 1,309 people living with cancer in Prince Edward Island, Manitoba and Quebec and examines ri

Proposal for a composite index of alcohol problems.

This study proposes constructing a composite index to measure the severity of alcohol problems in Canada. Composite summary indicators are used in many areas, particularly in economics where the Consumer Price Index is well known. The composite indexes developed for this analysis were constructed using the index number method. The indexes were based on the statistical series for alcohol consumption, alcohol morbidity, alcohol mortality and alcohol-related traffic offences in the ten provinces and cover the years 1975, 1980, 1985 and 1990. The selected statistical series were compared using bot

Temporal and spatial variation of domoic acid along Canada's coast.

Shellfish poisonings have posed severe risks to human health globally. The Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program was established in 1948 to monitor the toxin levels at shellfish harvesting sites along the coast of six provinces in Canada. Domoic acid has been a causal toxin for amnesic shellfish poisoning, and a macro-scale analysis of the temporal and spatial variation of domoic acid along Canada's coast was conducted in this study. We aggregated the toxin levels by week in blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) samples, respectively, over a one-year scale. The subseq

Transmissible venereal tumor of the uterine stump following successful chemotherapy in a 5-year-old mixed-breed dog.

A 5-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog was referred to the Atlantic Veterinary College (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) because of a 7-month history of intermittent pink, mucoid, vulvar discharge. The dog was imported from the Bahamas at 3.5 y of age and had a history of transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) of the vulva that was successfully treated with a course of vincristine chemotherapy. Complete remission was achieved with a disease-free interval of 6 mo before clinical signs recurred. Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan identified a large caudal abdominal mass thought to arise from t

Decriminalization of drug possession in British Columbia and hospitalizations for opioid poisoning.

OBJECTIVES: In January of 2023, the provincial government of British Columbia, Canada, received federal approval to decriminalize the personal possession of certain illegal drugs. The policy had multiple aims, including a long-term goal of reducing drug-related overdoses by decreasing stigma associated with drug use and promoting health service and treatment engagement. In May of 2024, the policy was amended to recriminalize drug possession in public spaces. We evaluated the association between the implementation of British Columbia's drug decriminalization policy, including both the initial e
