Sodium Hydrosulfide Delays Postharvest Softening of Sand Pear Fruit in Association With Altered Ethylene Production and Cell Wall Metabolism.

Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a hydrogen sulfide donor, has been reported to regulate postharvest senescence and quality maintenance in horticultural crops. However, its role in sand pear softening and the underlying physiological basis remain unclear. Mature fruits of the climacteric sand pear cultivar "Sucui No. 1" were treated with NaHS and stored at 20°C to evaluate its effects on postharvest quality, ethylene production, cell wall metabolism, and softening-related gene expression. Treatment with 1 mmol L-1 NaHS delayed firmness loss and reduced ethylene production, with limited effects on f

The PuNAC2-PutDT regulatory module drives late-stage vacuolar citrate accumulation in pear fruit.

In most fleshy fruits, including apple, cherry, plum, and grape, citric acid content declines during the late stages of fruit development, a process that largely determines fruit flavor. In contrast, pear (Pyrus spp.) exhibits a less common developmental pattern characterized by continued citric acid accumulation during late fruit development. Although similar patterns have been reported in a limited number of other fruit species and germplasms, the molecular mechanisms underlying this developmental trajectory remain largely unknown. Here, comparative analyses of organic acid dynamics among cu

Pesticide Residues in Apples and Pears: A Deterministic Assessment of Chronic Exposure and Non-Carcinogenic Risk for European Consumers.

(1) Pome fruits (apples and pears) are among the most frequently consumed fruits in Europe and may contribute to dietary exposure to pesticide residues. Although residue levels generally comply with maximum residue limits (MRLs), even low concentrations may cumulatively contribute to chronic health risks under conditions of frequent and long-term consumption. This study aimed to quantitatively assess dietary exposure and the potential non-carcinogenic health risks associated with pesticide residues in apples and pears, using representative monitoring and consumption data. (2) The assessment wa

Hyaluronic acid-functionalized nanoarmor enhances the stable colonization ability of Paenibacillus polymyxa JF_P68 and boosts its biological control efficacy against pear anthracnose.

BACKGROUND: The application of biocontrol agents offers a promising strategy for managing pear anthracnose, yet their efficacy is often limited by unstable colonization on fruit surfaces. RESULTS: Here, we isolated Paenibacillus polymyxa JF_P68, which exhibits strong inhibitory activity against Colletotrichum fructicola. To enhance its environmental tolerance, we developed a hyaluronic acid (HA)-functionalized nanoarmor using a layer-by-layer coating technique. This nanoarmor significantly improved the JF_P68's resistance to ultraviolet radiation and oxidative stress. In vivo trials demonstra

L-asparaginase-driven antibiosis in Pseudomonas fluorescens EK007: A promising biocontrol strategy against fire blight.

Fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora, is a destructive bacterial disease affecting pear and apple trees. The biocontrol ability of Pseudomonas fluorescens EK007 suppresses E. amylovora through competitive exclusion. In this study, EK007 was isolated from the pear phylloplane and characterized as an effective biological agent through antibacterial compounds. To identify the mechanisms underlying EK007's biocontrol activity, physiological tests, transposon insertion mutant libraries, allelic exchange, and whole-genome sequencing were performed. A transposon mutation in the massC homolog gene

Acidifying Spray Suspensions of Oxytetracycline and Kasugamycin Enhances Their Effectiveness for Fire Blight Control in Apple and Pear.

The stability of the fire blight control material, oxytetracycline, in water is strongly affected by pH, increasing with increasing acidity. From 2017 to 2021, pear and apple orchard trials were conducted to evaluate if acidic amendments to oxytetracycline sprays improve fire blight control. Compared with the water-treated control, infection suppression after two bloom applications of an acidified commercial oxytetracycline formulation averaged 85.9 ± 0.4% compared with 72.2 ± 1.7% without an acidifier, but individual trials frequently had insufficient statistical power to separate among acidi

Two bHLH transcription factors regulate PbGME1 expression to modulate ascorbate biosynthesis and salt tolerance in pear.

Salt stress severely limits plant growth and productivity. GDP-mannose-3',5'-epimerase (GME), a key enzyme in ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthesis, has been implicated in plant stress responses, but its role in pear salt tolerance remains unclear. Here, we identified PbGME1 as a positive regulator of salt tolerance in pear. The basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor PbbHLH67 directly binds to the PbGME1 promoter and activates its transcription, as shown by yeast one-hybrid, electrophoretic mobility shift, and dual-luciferase assays. Overexpression of PbbHLH67 enhanced salt tolerance in pear s

Dual biotic stressors shape volatile organic compound emission patterns in pome fruit trees.

Plants release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as part of their defense mechanisms when attacked by phytopathogens and herbivores. These specific volatile emissions can help plants avoid damage. In this study, we investigated the effects of the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, and the phytopathogens "Candidatus phytoplasma mali", causing apple proliferation (AP) or "Ca. P. pyri", causing pear decline (PD) on the volatile emissions from apple (Malus domestica) or pear (Pyrus communis) trees. We analyzed VOCs emitted by uninfected and infected trees exposed to male and fem

Survival of Generic Escherichia coli on Bulk and Wrapped d'Anjou Pears under Extended Storage Durations.

Due to past outbreaks and recalls linked to tree fruit, more targeted food safety risk mitigation measures are needed in the pear industry. However, there is limited research on food safety risks that are specific to pear packing operations. This study examined the survival of generic Escherichia coli on both unwrapped (bulk) and wrapped in commercial paper (containing 1.3% copper carbonate and 0.1% ethoxyquin) d'Anjou pears under extended periods of controlled atmosphere storage (4℃; 2-3% O2 and 1% CO2). Whole, fresh green d'Anjou pears were inoculated (∼7 log CFU/pear) with a three-strain co

Upregulation of PpHsfB2b at high temperature represses light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in pear.

In recent years, escalating global temperatures have adversely affected the yield and quality of horticultural crops. Red pears (Pyrus spp.), prized for their vibrant pigmentation, derive their characteristic coloration primarily from anthocyanin accumulation. Light and temperature are important environmental factors regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. Light induces the accumulation of anthocyanins in red pear; however, the specific molecular mechanism by which elevated temperatures inhibit anthocyanin biosynthesis in red pear remains unclear. The integration nodes of the light and temperatur

Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Phenolics from Pear Pomace: Method Optimization, Phenolic Profile, and Antioxidant Capacity.

Pear pomace, a major by-product of the juice processing, represents a valuable yet underexploited source of bioactive compounds. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was optimized using response surface methodology to enhance the recovery of phenolic compounds from pear pomace powder with aqueous ethanol as the extraction solvent. A Box-Behnken design was employed to evaluate the effects of ethanol concentration (40-80%), extraction time (30-90 min), and ultrasonic power (48-144 W) on total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The results demonstrated that the

Kinetic characteristics and model prediction of benzene-based pollutant migration from cardboard to pear peel under varied environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Corrugated cardboard is commonly used for fruit packaging, and its benzene-based pollutants migrating to fruits pose significant safety risks - clarifying this migration is crucial. However, no quantitative predictive model currently exists for pollutant migration during fruit logistics transport. This study aims to systematically investigate the migration characteristics of six typical benzene-based pollutants (phenol, acetophenone, benzophenone, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene) from corrugated cardboard to Korla fragrant pear peel, analyze the effects of temperature, relative hum

Design, Synthesis, Antibacterial Evaluation, and Mechanistic Insights of Garlic-Derived Disulfides against Erwinia amylovora.

Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight, poses a severe and ongoing threat to the global production of Rosaceous crops. We synthesized 54 garlic-derived disulfides and identified compound b as the most potent candidate (EC50 = 2.85 μg/mL), which significantly surpassed allicin and zhongshengmycin (ZSM). In planta assays on Cuiguan pear demonstrated that b provided exceptional curative and protective efficacy, effectively suppressing fire blight infections in flowers, leaves, shoots, and fruits. Mechanistically, b triggered lethal ROS accumulation by inhibiting catalase (CAT) and sup

On the Identity of Pear Psyllids in Iran: A Plea Against the Continued Misuse of Cacopsylla pyricola (Hemiptera: Psylloidea).

Pear psyllids are among the most serious pests of cultivated pear. In the past, repeated misidentifications and the uncritical application of species names led to considerable confusion in biodiversity records and pest monitoring of pear psyllids. Although several revisions clarified many of these issues, misidentifications have persisted, particularly in records attributed to Cacopsylla pyricola (Foerster) in Iran, which may result in serious problems in quarantine and pest management. Currently, 34 species of Cacopsylla are known to be associated with Pyrus spp., five of which are confirmed
