Observational phantom study. This study aimed to evaluate the radiation exposure dose of practitioner's hands when performing C-arm guided procedures and to determine the usefulness of our newly designed radiation shielding device.C-arm guided procedures including lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injections (TFESIs) are commonly used for pain control induced by lumbar radiculopathy. The practitioner's hands are vulnerable to radiation exposure because of the long exposure time and short distance from the radiation resource. No studies to date have reported the cumulative exposure of the p

Generally, electron therapy is applied to tumors on or close to the skin surface. However, this causes a variety of skin-related side effects. To alleviate the risk of these side effects, clinical treatment uses skin dosimeters to verify the therapeutic dose. However, dosimeters suffer from poor accuracy, because their attachment sites are approximated with the help of naked eyes. Therefore, a dosimeter based on a flexible material that can adjust to the contours of the human body is required. In this study, the reproducibility, linearity, dose-rate dependence, and percentage depth ionization

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to radiation can lead to gene mutations and increase the risk of cancer. Low rate fluoroscopy has the potential to reduce the radiation exposure for both the examiner and the patient during various fluoroscopic procedures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of low rate fluoroscopy on reducing an examiner's radiation dose during nerve root block.
METHODS: A total of 101 lumbar nerve root block examinations were performed at our institute during a 6-month period. During the first 3 months, low rate fluoroscopy was performed at 7.5 frames/s (FPS)

According to the ALARA principle, exposure to radiation should be reduced as low as reasonably achievable. This principle is very important in nuclear medicine (NM), and different investigations have been performed by establishing protocols and standards for staff protection. This study aims to measure the operational quantities, personal dose equivalent, Hp (10), Hp (0.07) and Hp (3) for NM staff in Shiraz hospitals, and comparison with dose limits. Two types of dosimeters, TLD-100 and GR-200, were used in this study. In the first step, the calibration of dosimeters was performed using differ

In this study, the authors examine the responses of radiation-sensitive p-channel MOSFETs to irradiation and subsequent annealing at room temperature and higher temperatures to investigate their use as a dosimeter for measuring ionizing radiation. The response of these transistors to radiation was monitored based on the shift in the threshold voltage as a function of the absorbed dose of radiation. The results showed that the shift in the threshold voltage depended on the densities of traps formed during exposure to ionizing radiation in Si and at the Si-SiO2 interface on which the charges wer

Radiation dose can be determined with the radiation dosimeter. Recently, hand-held radioisotope identifier is being developed by many researchers to measure the radiation dose and to determine the type of the radioisotope. New design concept of the radioisotope identifier is introduced in this work. In this design, one can measure the radiation dose and the type of the radioisotope, and one can also determine the direction where the radiation comes. The hand-held radioisotope identifier is based on cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector. The detection principle is from the change of the energy

PURPOSE: The precise assessment of the dose distribution of high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation remains a challenge, because the signal of most dosimeters will be saturated due to the high ionization density. Such measurements are particularly important for heavy-ion beam cancer therapy. On this basis, the present work examined the high LET effect associated with three-dimensional gel dosimetry based on radiation-induced chemical reactions. The purpose of this study was to create an ion beam radio-fluorogenic gel dosimeter with a reduced effect of LET.

BACKGROUND: The reconstruction of lifetime radiation doses for medical workers presents special challenges not commonly encountered for the other worker cohorts comprising the Million Worker Study.
METHODS: The selection of approximately 175,000 medical radiation workers relies on using estimates of lifetime and annual personal monitoring results collected since 1977. Approaches have been created to adjust the monitoring results so that mean organ absorbed doses can be estimated.
RESULTS: Changes in medical technology and practices have altered the radiation exposure environments to which a

An evaluation of cancer risk based on organ-absorbed dose is underway for the Japanese Epidemiological Study on Low-Dose Radiation Effects (J-EPISODE), which has analyzed health effects in association with radiation exposure evaluated with the personal dose equivalent Hp(10). Although the concept of effective dose and its operational definition of Hp(10) are widely used for radiological protection purposes, effective dose is not recommended for epidemiological evaluation. Organ-absorbed dose was instead adopted for the IARC 15-Country Collaborative study (15-Country study), the International N

BACKGROUND: Exposure to radiation over many years prompts concerns regarding potential health-related effects, particularly the incidence of cataracts and the development of cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the exposure of the examiner to radiation during myelography versus radiculography and root block.
METHODS: A total of 114 examinations were performed in our institute in the 6 months. Sixty-two examinations were performed during myelography in the first 3 months (MG group), while 52 were performed during radiculography and root block in the last 3 months (RB gr

Testicular radiation exposure has been linked to diminished spermatogenesis, male infertility, and potentially testicular cancer. Despite this, the risk of testicular exposure from intraoperative fluoroscopy to the male orthopedic surgeon has yet to be studied. The purpose of this study is to determine factors associated with unnecessary testicular radiation exposure in male orthopedic surgeons. The study was designed to answer the following questions: (1) Do the designs of lead apron protection result in any differential testicular radiation exposure? (2) Does the position of the surgeon (sta

Continuous exposures to ultraviolet radiation can lead to harmful effects on human skin. Professional drivers may spend more than 8 h per day inside a vehicle. This study describes an analysis of the UVER (erythemal ultraviolet radiation) received by a driver and passenger inside a vehicle. A three-door Peugeot 206 was used for the study. VioSpor Blue Line dosimeters (with a response profile close to that of human skin) were used to measure the erythematic dose of UV radiation (able to produce erythema on human skin). Four dosimeters were placed in the driver's position and another four in the

Levels of exposure to radiation were recorded at sixty sites in fifteen patients during intramedullary interlocking femoral nailing. Radiation film dosimeters were placed at four gonadal sites on each subject. A standard male-gonad cup or a pelvic drape of 0.5-millimeter-thick lead-equivalent was put in place to shield the gonads. A second set of four dosimeters was placed external to the shield to approximate unprotected exposure. The total duration of the fluoroscopy averaged five minutes (range, thirty seconds to fourteen minutes). The total exposure to radiation external to the shield was

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of UltraBLOX™ radiation attenuating hand cream during lengthy cardiac catheterization procedures in children.
BACKGROUND: The hands of interventional cardiologists receive high doses of radiation due to their proximity to the X-ray beam. Radiation attenuating gloves have about a 26% attenuation rate, but reduce dexterity and tactile sensation. The UltraBLOX™ cream is a new FDA-approved X-ray attenuating cream that can be applied to the operator's hands for radio-protection.

PURPOSE: Sophisticated small animal irradiators, incorporating cone-beam-CT image-guidance, have recently been developed which enable exploration of the efficacy of advanced radiation treatments in the preclinical setting. Microstereotactic-body-radiation-therapy (microSBRT) is one technique of interest, utilizing field sizes in the range of 1-15 mm. Verification of the accuracy of microSBRT treatment delivery is challenging due to the lack of available methods to comprehensively measure dose distributions in representative phantoms with sufficiently high spatial resolution and in 3 dimensions

BACKGROUND: Advancements in radiotherapy have enabled the use of high-definition irradiation, leading to more precise and finely adjusted treatments in clinical settings. Nevertheless, the attainment of high resolution, an extensive measurement area, and the repeatability of dose distribution measurements persist as challenges in clinical practice, thereby often requiring multiple dosimetry systems to overcome measurement constraints. Consequently, there is a significant need to develop a dosimeter that offers both a high resolution and a capability for repeated use.
PURPOSE: A practical scin

The 2013/59/Euratom Directive reduced the occupational exposure limits for the lens. Since it has become crucial to estimate the dose absorbed by the lens, we have studied the individual variability of exposed workers' ocular conformations with respect to the data estimated from their personal dosimetry. The anterior eye conformations of 45 exposed workers were acquired using Scheimpflug imaging and classified according to their sight conditions (emmetropia, myopia or hypermetropia). Three eye models were computed, with two lens reconstructions, and implemented in an interventional radiology s

Although interventional radiology (IVR) is preferred over surgical procedures because it is less invasive, it results in increased radiation exposure due to long fluoroscopy times and the need for frequent imaging. Nurses engaged in cardiac IVR receive the highest lens radiation doses among medical workers, after physicians. Hence, it is important to measure the lens exposure of IVR nurses accurately. Very few studies have evaluated IVR nurse lens doses using direct dosimeters. This study was conducted using direct eye dosimeters to determine the occupational eye dose of nurses engaged in card
