The thyroid gland is one of the most radiosensitive human organs. There are two major unwanted consequences from radiation to the thyroid in humans: hypothyroidism and neoplasia. In the system of dose limitation medical surveillance undoubtedly acquires obligations with regard to early tumor diagnosis (secondary prevention). On the basis of the risk coefficient of radioinduction of tumors established by international organizations, thyroidology should not be neglected. Following a wide range of doses of ionizing radiation, an increased risk of thyroid adenomas and nodules has been also observe

Radiation induced skin wound/dermatitis is one of the common side effects of radiotherapy or interventional radiobiology. In order to combat impaired healing of radiation wounds, alternative therapy to use sildenafil citrate (SC) topical hydrogel as a therapeutic option was proposed that has known to enhance nitric oxide in wounds. Our aim was to develop a radiation induced skin wound model and to investigate the wound healing efficacy of 5% SC hydrogel formulation in Sprague-Dawley rats. In the present study, the radiation wound inducing dose was optimized using a multi-dose localized γ-radia

PURPOSE: To address the following key question, what are the consequences of nontargeted and delayed effects for linear nonthreshold models of radiation risk? This paper considers low-dose "indirect" or nontargeted effects and how they might impact radiation protection, particularly at the level of the environment. Nontargeted effects refer to effects in cells, tissues, or organisms that were not targeted by irradiation and that did not receive direct energy deposition. They include genomic instability and lethal mutations in progeny of irradiated cells and bystander effects in neighboring cel

In response to the three petitions by Carol S. Marcus, Mark L. Miller, and Mohan Doss, dated February 9, February 13, and February 24, 2015, respectively, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the Commission) has announced that it is considering assessing its choice of dose-response model, the Linear No-Threshold (LNT) model, for exposure to ionizing radiation. This comment is designed to assist the Commission in evaluating the merits of a review of the default dose-response model it uses as the basis for the Standards for Protection against Radiation regulations. It extends the petitioner

With the introduction of modern multislice scanner generations, computed tomography (CT) has emerged as a useful tool for evaluation of the coronary arteries. A common application of coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is the examination of patients with intermediate pretest probability for obstructive coronary artery disease. Despite the widespread use of cardiac CT examinations in clinical practice, concern remains about the exposure to ionizing radiation and its potential hazards. Therefore, radiation dose and strategies for dose reduction have become an important focus of interest. Several smal

It was found that the combination of unithiol (Sodium salt of 2,3-dimercapto-1-propansulfonic acid) with cystamine and AET diminished their toxicity. The optimum ratio for the antitoxic effect is 0.5 molar equivalent of unithiol per radioprotective 1.0 equivalent of thiol. Animals withstand big doses of protectors well, that gives an opportunity to use increased amounts of cystamine and AET. In the experiments with circular irradiation of male (CBA x C57B1)F1 mice weighing 18-22 g with fission neutrons (the neutron mean energy was 0.85 MeV, the contribution of gamma-quanta to the total was 25%

Space radiation is considered the biggest threat to astronauts’ health in long-duration space missions, where the main concern is the potential carcinogenic effects from the continuous exposure to Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR). The quality factor ([Formula: see text]) of GCR presents the greatest uncertainty, complicating accurate risk assessment and the establishment of safe radiation exposure standards for astronauts in missions beyond low Earth orbit. This study uses a recently developed analytic microdosimetric model to calculate [Formula: see text] values for space radiation. The influence o

According to official statistics, cancer remains the main reason of death and over 50% of patients with cancer receive radiotherapy. However, adverse consequences after radiation exposure like radiation-induced skin reactions (RISR) have negative or even fatal impact on patients' quality of life (QoL). In this review we summarize the mechanisms and managements of RISRs, a process that involve a variety of extracellular and intracellular signals, among which oxidative stress (OS) are now commonly believed to be the initial part of the occurrence of all types of RISRs. As for the management of R

BACKGROUND: This study of radiation exposure (RE) to physicians performing structural heart procedures evaluated the efficacy of a novel comprehensive radiation shield compared to those of traditional shielding methods. A novel comprehensive shielding system (Protego, Image Diagnostics Inc) has been documented to provide superior RE protection during coronary procedures compared to that provided by a standard "drop down" shield. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of this shield in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures, which are associated with disproportio

Use of ionizing radiation during cardiac catheterization interventions adversely impacts both the patients and medical staff. In recent years, radiation dose in cardiac catheterization interventions has become a topic of increasing interest in interventional cardiology and there is a strong interest in reducing radiation exposure during the procedures. This review presents the current status of radiation protection in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and summarizes a practical approach for radiation dose management for minimizing radiation exposure. This review also presents recent innov

It took about 30 y after Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen's discovery of x rays and Henri Becquerel's discovery of natural radioactivity for scientists in the civilized world to formulate recommendations on exposure to ionizing radiation. We know of these efforts today because the organizations that resulted from the concerns raised in 1928 at the Second International Congress of Radiology still play a role in radiation protection. The organizations are known today as the International Commission on Radiological Protection and, in the United States, the National Council on Radiation Protection and Meas

There is no convincing evidence of germline mutation manifest as heritable disease in the offspring of humans attributable to ionizing radiation, yet radiation clearly induces mutations in microbes and somatic cells of rodents and humans. Doses to the embryo estimated to be in the range of 0.15-0.2 Gy during the pre-implantation and pre-somite stages may increase the risk of embryonic loss. However, an increased risk of congenital malformations or growth retardation has not been observed in the surviving embryos. These results are primarily derived from mammalian animal studies and are referre

Human exposure to ionizing radiation is one of the acknowledged potential showstoppers for long duration manned interplanetary missions. Human exploratory missions cannot be safely performed without a substantial reduction of the uncertainties associated with different space radiation health risks, and the development of effective countermeasures. Most of our knowledge of the biological effects of heavy charged particles comes from accelerator-based experiments. During the 35th COSPAR meeting, recent ground-based experiments with high-energy iron ions were discussed, and these results are brie

Ablative treatment of thyroid cancer with 131I is associated with the exposure to ionizing radiation of not only the target cells but also other cells and organs in the patient's body. Thermoluminescent dosimetry showed that the mean dose equivalent in ovaries equaled to several dozen mSv when the mean therapeutic dose was 2.8 GBq of 131I. In the treated young women the performed ovulation tests revealed no dysfunction of the ovaries. The highest dose equivalent in the clinic staff would not exceed 20 mSv per year. Accordingly, the dose equivalents to the public would not exceed the threshold

Radioiodine (I-131) is used successfully since more than 50 years for treatment of hyperthyroidism in Graves' disease. In the USA, more than half of the patients with a Graves' hyperthyroidism are treated primarily with radioiodine, whereas in Europe the frequency is less than a quarter of the patients. In Germany consensus could be achieved, the antithyroid drugs are indicated in patients with manifest hyperthyroidism to induce euthyroidism before radioiodine treatment. Typical indications for radioiodine treatment are: Treatment with antithyroid drugs without success for more than one year,

BACKGROUND: The nitroxide Tempol (4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) is a stable, free radical that exhibits protection from ionizing radiation damage and from oxidative stress mediated through exposure of cells to superoxide or hydrogen peroxide. Radiation protection has been observed in both in vivo and in vitro models. To understand the mechanism of Tempol-mediated radioprotection better, the production of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations was evaluated. This study analyzed Tempol-mediated radioprotection of human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs).
METHODS: Peripheral

A controversy has arisen concerning the ability of sunscreens to protect mice from the immunosuppressive effects of UV radiation. We have assessed the photoprotection in hairless mice of two sun protection factor (SPF)15 sunscreens containing different UVB (280-320-nm) absorbers, namely, octyl-N-dimethyl-p-aminobenzoate (o-PABA) or 2-ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate (2-EHMC). Following three minimum erythemal exposures to UV radiation, both systemic suppression of contact hypersensitivity to 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene and induction of susceptibility to transplanted UV radiation-induced tumor cells
