Due to recent advancements in diagnostic techniques, the incidence of multiple primary cancer has increased; however, synchronous cancer of the anal canal and cervix (SCACC) is rare, and no previous studies have investigated the treatment of this disease. The present study reports a case in which intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) was used to treat a 64-year-old female with SCACC, inguinal lymphadenopathy and anal pain. The patient was diagnosed with cT3N3M0 stage IIIb anal canal squamous cell carcinoma and cT1b1N0M0 stage Ib1 cervical squamous cell carcinoma, based on biopsy and imaging

Radiotherapy and surgery are important radical treatment options for cervical cancer, but the presence of a pelvic kidney complicates the situation. Fine radiation technique can help avoiding side effects. Radiation to the modified pelvis using intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) followed by brachytherapy, while avoiding the renal allograft is technically feasible which ensures adequate target volume and reduces side effects. Here, the authors report a 45-year-old patient with invasive cervical cancer with a pelvic kidney who was treated by pelvic IMRT in combination with high-dose rate br

Hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC) is treated by definitive concomitant chemoradiotherapy at most centres. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is an advanced computer-controlled high-precision radiotherapy technique that has been used at our institution in the treatment of HSCC since 2002. Our aim was to review the treatment results of IMRT-based chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in patients diagnosed with HSCC. The cohort comprised all patients with previously untreated, biopsy-proven squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx treated by definitive CRT using IMRT between March 2002 and N

Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has been available at Peter MaCallum Cancer Centre (PMCC) since November 2000. The present report illustrates two cases of our early experience with IMRT. Case 1 is a 66-year-old man with a T(1)N(2)M(0) nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated with chemo-radiotherapy using parotid-sparing IMRT. Fourteen months following treatment he remains in complete remission, with salivary function assessed using a xerostomia-specific quality of life questionnaire, having returned to near pretreatment levels by 12 months. Case 2 is a 70-year-old man with a T(4)N(0)M(0) base

PURPOSE: The equivalent uniform dose (EUD) for tumors is defined as the biologically equivalent dose that, if given uniformly, will lead to the same cell kill in the tumor volume as the actual nonuniform dose distribution. Recently, a new formulation of EUD was introduced that applies to normal tissues as well. EUD can be a useful end point in evaluating treatment plans with nonuniform dose distributions for three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy. In this study, we introduce an objective function based on the EUD and investigate the feasibility and useful

PURPOSE: Helical tomotherapy (HT) is a rotational intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) technique that allows target conformal irradiation and efficient organs at risk (OAR) sparing in the case of complex target volumes and specific anatomic considerations, but increases the "low-dose bath" to non-target volumes. The aim of this study was to analyze the delayed hepatotoxicity after rotational IMRT (HT) radiation therapy for non-metastatic breast cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included all non-metastatic breast cancer patients with a normal pre-radi

Kimura's disease (KD) is a rare, chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology, which commonly affects men of the Asian race. Here, we present a case capsule of a 39- year-old man with KD of the left cheek, managed initially by surgery alone. He developed local recurrence after 6 months and was treated with steroids and isotretinoin. Eventually, steroids were discontinued due to toxicity and the lesion progressively increased in size. The patient was successfully treated using intensity-modulated radiotherapy with simultaneous integrated boost as a primary modality with minimal adverse ef

BACKGROUND: Primary localized amyloidosis is characterized by the deposition of amyloid proteins restricted to one organ, without systemic involvement. Primary nasopharyngeal amyloidosis is an exceedingly rare condition, for which the standard treatment remains unknown. Because of its challenging anatomical position, surgery alone hardly results in complete resection of the localized amyloidosis. Therefore, an interdisciplinary planning board to design optimal treatment is of particular importance.
