Effectiveness of ignition interlock devices in reducing drunk driving recidivism.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if ignition interlock devices reduce driving while intoxicated (DWI) recidivism. SEARCH STRATEGIES: Cochrane Collaboration search strategies were used. SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies for selection examined the effectiveness of interlock programs in a defined population. Studies were required to have a clear description of the program and outcomes evaluated, to have a comparison group and to provide interpretable data. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: A total of 31 studies were found. Ten studies met the selection criteria. Three of these studies were eliminated from furthe

The Impact of a Work Release Program on Post-Prison Recidivism in Taiwan.

Extensive research has consistently demonstrated that gainful employment after incarceration is a critical factor in supporting the successful reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals into society. While recent studies conducted in Western contexts have shown that work release programs (WRPs) facilitate this reintegration, their effectiveness in reducing recidivism remains largely unexplored in Asian societies. This study analyzes archival data from Taiwan's Agency of Corrections, focusing on a 2020 parole cohort of 8,249 individuals as the study target population. Using propensity s

Trauma recidivism: epidemiology and predictors in a level I trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is the leading cause of death for individuals under age 45 and disproportionately affects underserved populations. Trauma recidivism is defined as recurrent hospital admissions for injury-a substantial burden on healthcare systems. In regions such as Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, which has a large, aging population, recidivism is often influenced by social, behavioral, and structural determinants. This study examines patterns of trauma recidivism at an urban tertiary trauma center and identifies associated risk factors to guide targeted interventions in both hospital and c

Are mental disorders associated with recidivism in men convicted of sexual offenses?

INTRODUCTION: In offending populations, prevalence rates of mental disorders are much higher than in the general population. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether mental disorders can improve the prediction of recidivism beyond actuarial risk assessment tools. METHODS: The present prospective-longitudinal study was conducted between 2001 and 2021 and included 1066 men convicted of sexual offenses in Austria. All participants were evaluated with actuarial risk assessment tools for the prediction of sexual and violent recidivism and the Structured Clinical Interview for Axis I and Axis II disorde

Radiological and audiological prediction for hearing outcome in cholesteatoma recidivism surgery.

PURPOSE: In cholesteatoma recidivism, achieving satisfactory hearing outcome after revision surgery remains challenging. The presence of concomitant recidivism pathology or related anatomical abnormalities can impact revision reconstruction of the sound transmission system. The current study aimed to identify prognostic factors affecting hearing outcomes after surgery for cholesteatoma recidivism. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included consecutive patients whose ears required initial surgery for recidivism between January 2016 and December 2021. Patients followed up for < 6 months

Trauma recidivism is pervasive and is associated with mental and social health opportunities.

INTRODUCTION: Recidivism after orthopedic trauma results in greater morbidity and costs. Prior studies explored the effects of social and medical factors affecting the frequency of return to the hospital with new, unrelated injury. Identification of mental, social and other risk factors for trauma recidivism may provide opportunities for mitigation. The purposes of this study are to determine the rates of subsequent, unrelated injury noted among orthopedic trauma patients at a large urban trauma center and to evaluate what patient and injury features are associated with greater rates of trauma

Factors associated with recidivism at a South African forensic psychiatric hospital.

AIMS: This study examines common factors associated with recidivism among state patients at a South African forensic psychiatric hospital. More specifically, demographic, clinical and criminological factors of a recidivist group are compared to a non-recidivist group with the intention of understanding to what extent these factors might determine the likelihood of re-offending. METHOD: A retrospective case file review of 293 inpatients and a random selection of 120 outpatients was conducted. For the purpose of the study, a patient was classified as a recidivist if an additional charge or act

The Effect of Treatment Completion on Recidivism Among TASC Program Clients.

Despite the enormous resources spent by states in the United States on bridging the gap between criminal justice and behavioral health services, there have been relatively few statewide evaluations of drug treatment client recidivism. We present the results of an evaluation of recidivism outcomes for a sample of individuals ( n = 1,274) referred to the Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC) program in North Carolina from 2007 to 2008. The methodology accounted for both client and offense characteristics drawn from TASC, court, and corrections records. Multivariate analyses indic

Protective strengths, risk, and recidivism in a sample of known sexual offenders.

The relationship between protective strengths and risk, as assessed by the Inventory of Offender Risk, Needs, and Strengths, was examined with respect to the recidivism rate and type of reoffense in a sample of 110 adult males incarcerated for sexual offenses. The sample included offenders who were completing a prison-based sexual offense treatment program during the last 18 months of their incarceration. Approximately 40% of the sample recidivated in some way, including 6% sexually, within the 6-year follow-up time. Self-perceived protective strengths were significantly valid predictors for s

Public Perception of Recidivism Risk among Released Correctional Inmates in Japan.

This study examines the disparity between public perception and official statistics on recidivism rates in Japan and investigates the impacts of gender and age on these estimates. A web-based survey with 381 participants was conducted. Participants estimated five-year reimprisonment rates for seven offense categories and the overall average. Results showed that participants overestimated recidivism rates for all offenses, with significant overestimation for sex offenses, robbery, and drug offenses by 27.35, 23.11, and 18.54 percentage points, respectively. A two-factor analysis of variance rev

Once, twice, three times a bite victim: recidivism in snake envenomation.

INTRODUCTION: We believe there are certain behaviors that may predispose people to being bitten by a snake. The purpose of this study was to describe cases reported to the North American Snakebite Registry in which the snakebite victim acknowledged multiple lifetime snakebites and to test the hypothesis that male sex, intentional handling of the snake, alcohol consumption, and maintaining snakes in captivity are associated with sustaining multiple snakebites in a lifetime. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of de-identified patient information reported to the snakebite registry between

Latent Profile Analysis Predicting Recidivism Among Women Who Have Sexually Offended.

The few existing typology studies on women who have sexually offended (WWSO) have largely been limited by small sample sizes, have not included scale scores from risk assessments, or used recidivism within their typology (instead of using typologies to predict recidivism). In our sample of 241 WWSO, we conducted a latent profile analysis and observed four, distinct profiles: "low-risk WWSO," characterized by fewer criminal history incidents and lower risk-assessment scores; "problem-endorsing WWSO," with higher probability of endorsing various life problems such as educational/employment and e

"When She Says Daddy": Black Fathers' Recidivism following Reentry from Jail.

We report on the findings of a mixed methods longitudinal study of 84 African American fathers of young children who were enrolled into the study during the father's jail stay. Participants were assessed using interviews, self-report measures, and administrative records on frequency of father-child contact, father-caregiver relationship quality, family support, paternal pre-incarceration employment, fathers' plans to live with the child upon reentry, history of substance abuse, and new convictions one year following release from jail. Qualitative analysis revealed three primary identities of f

Individual factors associated with recidivism among mental health court program clients.

There is growing evidence that diversion to a mental health court program (MHC) can reduce recidivism rates and improve the quality of life of clients. However, there is less known about MHC client characteristics and factors associated with recidivism. Yet, this information would be useful to increase the effectiveness of these programs. Cross-sectional quantitative data were collected on MHC clients in three consecutive years. Of the 155 program clients that were successfully interviewed, only 154 were included in the analysis due to one non-consent to collect further data from their case ma

Psychopathy, self-identified race/ethnicity, and nonviolent recidivism: A longitudinal study.

Psychopathy has long been noted to play an important role in the prediction of criminal behavior and offending. Although many studies have demonstrated that psychopathic traits are predictive of violent recidivism among offenders, relatively few studies have examined the predictive validity of psychopathic traits for nonviolent recidivism and very few have examined this issue in a sample of offenders in the United States. To address this issue, we examined the predictive validity of psychopathy for both nonviolent and general recidivism using the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) in a samp

Seattle's Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD): Program effects on recidivism outcomes.

Drug users and dealers frequently cycle through the criminal justice system in what is sometimes referred to as a "revolving door." Arrest, incarceration and prosecution have not deterred this recidivism. Seattle's Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program was established to divert these individuals to case management and supportive services instead of jail and prosecution. A nonrandomized controlled evaluation was conducted to examine LEAD effects on criminal recidivism (i.e., arrests, criminal charges). The sample included 318 people suspected of low-level drug and prostitution activ

Recidivism following mental health court exit: Between and within-group comparisons.

Over the past decade, Mental Health Courts (MHCs) have spread rapidly across the U.S. These courts aim to reduce recidivism among adults with mental illnesses through diversion into community-based treatment. Extant research suggests that MHCs can be effective in reducing recidivism, but also demonstrates that effectiveness varies as a function of characteristics of the participants (e.g., criminal history) and the program (e.g., coercion). Less is known regarding the extent to which process-related factors (e.g., length of participation, time between referral and receipt of services) impact e

Impact of methadone maintenance treatment on women offenders' post-release recidivism.

Drug--including opioid--dependence is common in correctional populations, however little research exists on interventions for women offenders. Based on retrospective administrative data, we examined rates of return to custody (RTC) among three samples of Canadian federal women offenders with problematic opioid use (total n=137): (1) a group initiated on MMT during incarceration who continued MMT post-release (MMT-C; n=25); (2) a group initiated on MMT but who terminated treatment post-release (MMT-T; n=67), and (3) a non-MMT control group (MMT-N; n=45). Study groups were similar regarding soci

A Systematic Review of the Effectiveness of Family Interventions in Reducing Juvenile Recidivism.

Family-based interventions have been shown to improve behavioral and justice-related outcomes for youth. There has been less focus on whether family-based interventions are effective at reducing youth recidivism, especially for newer or lesser known interventions. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review of studies utilizing family-based interventions to address recidivism for youth involved in the juvenile justice system. Of the identified 3,497 unique articles, 235 full-text articles were reviewed and 31 met criteria for inclusion in the review. A variety of family-based interve

Relative Impact of Underreporting and Desistance on the Dark Figure of Sexual Recidivism.

Sexual recidivism rates based on arrests or convictions underestimate actual reoffending due to underreporting. A previous Monte Carlo simulation estimated actual recidivism rates under various reporting and conviction assumptions but did not account for desistance-the decreasing likelihood of reoffending over time. This study addresses that gap by incorporating a 12.3% annual desistance rate (from a well-known empirical study) and exploring its impact alongside varying charge rates (100%-5%). The results showed that reductions in charge rates lead to disproportionately large increases in reci
