Teeth with induced chronic periradicular periodontitis in dogs were root canal treated. After the biomechanical preparation, using K files and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite as the irrigant solution, all root canals were dressed with an antibacterial dressing based on calcium hydroxide, which was left in place for 7 days. After this time, the root canals were obturated with lateral condensation of cold gutta-percha with either a calcium hydroxide root canal filling material (Sealapex) or a zinc oxide-eugenol sealer (Fill Canal). After 270 days, histopathological analysis showed better apical and pe

The purpose of this study was to assess the seal obtained in straight and curved root canals filled with either laterally compacted gutta-percha or Thermafil obturators. Each technique was used in combination with three different sealers (RSA RoekoSeal, AH Plus, AH 26). Thermafil obturators were also used without sealer, resulting in a total of 14 test groups of 16 teeth each. Sixty teeth served as positive or negative controls. Included in the study were 142 extracted teeth with straight and 142 with curved root canals. All canals were enlarged up to size 40. After obturation, all roots were

INTRODUCTION: Traditional access cavity preparation involves removing the roof of the pulp chamber and smoothing the dentin bulges at the root canal orifice, thereby creating straight-line access. However, this may damage more healthy dental tissue and reduce the tooth's fracture resistance. This case series presents a novel minimally invasive endodontic protocol for 1 maxillary canine and 4 mandibular premolars, which required root canal therapy, due to labial/buccal cervical decay that caused pulpitis or periapical periodontitis.
METHODS: Our treatment protocol includes the following steps:

The successful retreatment of root canal-treated teeth depends largely on the effective removal of existing filling materials. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of two obturation techniques, single cone (SC) and cold lateral compaction (CLC), on the retrievability of NeoSealer Flo bioceramic sealer during endodontic retreatment. Twenty-four extracted single-rooted mandibular premolars with standardized root canal morphology were mechanically prepared and randomly allocated into two equal groups according to the obturation technique employed (n = 12). Following obturation with NeoSeale

BACKGROUND: Root canal anatomy is a complex entity. The main objective of root canal treatment is to get rid of the infection and have a good apical and coronal seal with an appropriate filling. Inability to achieve thorough cleaning and shaping followed by three-dimensional obturation of the root canal system usually causes root canal treatment failure. For this reason, clinicians should be aware of these anatomical variations to achieve successful treatment.
AIM: The aim of this article is to report on the successful treatment and follow-up of mandibular first molar with additional middle m

This in vitro study evaluated the coronal leakage of human saliva into root canals filled by lateral condensation of gutta-percha using two root canal sealers containing calcium hydroxide. Obturated canals with gutta-percha and either Sealapex of Sealer 26 were mounted in an apparatus and then exposed to saliva. The number of days required for total recontamination of the root canal was recorded. Evaluation was conducted for 60 days. Thirty-five percent of the specimens of the Sealer 26 group showed entire recontamination at 60 days. Eighty percent of the root canals obturated with Sealapex sh

If an endodontic problem is diagnosed in a mandibular premolar, and root canal therapy is provided, it must be considered that second and third canals might exist. Although the existence of a third canal would be rare, a thorough evaluation may help to prevent future complications. In the case presented here, failure to recognize a third canal might have resulted in incomplete instrumentation and canal obturation, and endodontic failure. Variations in root canal morphology and the number of canals might not have been detected even during close inspection of the pulp chamber floor. Therefore, t

Patients attending a dedicated dental clinic during the previous 24 months were assessed for the success of root canal treatment. Two groups, totalling 48 patients, had root canal treatment to 57 teeth performed by one operator. All treatment was carried out without antibiotic prophylaxis over two or more appointments. Patients with HIV infection had root canal treatment to 40 teeth. Sixteen patients in the control group had root canal treatment to 17 teeth. Short-term success was determined by follow-up appointments 1-3 months following obturation. No complications were experienced in either

The objective of this study was to evaluate the apical and periapical repair after endodontic treatment of teeth with pulp necrosis and a chronic periapical lesion in dogs. Seventy-two root canals from four mongrel dogs were submitted to biomechanical preparation, using 5.25% sodium hypochlorite or 2% chlorhexidine digluconate as the irrigating solution. The root canals were subsequently either filled immediately with Sealapex, using active lateral gutta-percha condensation, or a calcium hydroxide root canal dressing was applied for 15 days before filling with Sealapex. After 210 days, the ani

BACKGROUND: In recent years, concerns have arisen regarding the sealing efficacy of traditional root canal obturation materials such as gutta-percha (GP) and various sealers. The resin-based obturation complexes like RealSealTM (SybronEndo, Orange, CA) and ResilonTM (Resilon Research LLC, Madison, CT) had been developed as replacements for conventional obturation materials, gutta-percha, and various types of sealers. Additionally, ActiV GPTM (Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), a glass-ionomer-based obturation system, has gained attention.
AIM: This in vitro study's objective was to evaluate ActiV

The apical sealing ability of a tricalcium phosphate sealer was compared with that of three other sealers. Seventy roots of human incisors were cleansed and shaped and randomly assigned to one of seven groups of ten roots each. The root canal systems were obturated with gutta-percha and one sealer using the lateral-vertical condensation technique. The canal was sealed with Roth's sealer, Sealapex, Kerr root canal sealer, or Sankin apatite root sealer (Type I, II, or III). One group was filled with gutta-percha without sealer to serve as a control. After the roots were immersed in silver nitrat

The aim is to compare periapical radiography and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in assessing the number of root canals in mandibular incisors and in identifying untreated canals, using microcomputed tomography (microCT) as the reference standard. Images of forty-two mandibular incisors were obtained by microCT, periapical radiography, and CBCT. Five endodontist examiners independently analyzed the periapical and CBCT images to identify the presence of one or two canals. Subsequently, 10 teeth with two canals were selected and root canals obturated (5 teeth with only one canal obturated a

Nonsurgical treatment of 3 maxillary lateral incisors with dens invaginatus is reported. Invaginated teeth present technical difficulties with respect to their management because of complicated canal morphology. In the first case reported, apical abscess with incomplete root formation was found at the time of examination. Calcium hydroxide apexification provided favorable conditions for root closure and obturation. The other 2 cases were treated by conventional root canal treatment. Follow-up examinations showed successful clinical results, with osseous healing evident radiographically.

BACKGROUND: Preventing tooth loss is of utmost importance in maintaining optimal mastication, phonation, and aesthetics. Most commonly, pulpitis occurs as a result of caries, while trauma less frequently causes it. In both cases, it can lead to unbearable pain. To alleviate this pain and preserve the tooth without resorting to extraction, root canal treatment is indicated. To compare the radiographic quality of root canal filling sealing achieved with the Obtura II system and the cold lateral condensation technique.
METHODS: This randomized clinical trial was conducted at the School of Dentis

Here, we report the diagnosis and treatment of an extraoral cutaneous sinus tract originating in a mandibular second molar with a C-shaped root canal system. The patient was referred to our department by a dermatologist after a series of unsuccessful treatments, including antibiotics. Diffuse radiolucency on a preoperative radiograph revealed that earlier root canal treatment had been only partially successful. Consequently, we performed retreatment of the root canal comprising removal of the former restoration and gutta-percha, cleaning and shaping, and passive irrigation with sodium hypochlo

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Debriding and disinfecting complex anatomies within the root canal system pose a major challenge during root canal therapy. Even with current chemomechanical techniques, debris and bacterial remnants are commonly left behind, which are generally believed to increase the risk of endodontic failure. This case details the use of a new technique to debride complex apical anatomy in a maxillary molar.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old female presented to the clinic with a chief complaint of increasing pain in her tooth. Clinical examination of the right first maxillary molar (#3) reve
