Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) encephalitis has a high mortality rate. Among those who survive, ~80% develop some type of permanent neurologic disorder. Early diagnosis and treatment may help prevent long-term sequelae. There have been several case reports as well as retrospective and prospective studies associating HHV-6 encephalitis with some form of sodium imbalance, either hyponatremia or hypernatremia; however, the exact frequency post-HCT is unknown, with reports ranging from 30% to 100%. We performed a systematic review of the literature and found 34 cases of HHV-6 encephalitis reported in

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) frequently reactivates after solid-organ and hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), and it has been associated with important outcomes in these settings. In 1-2% of recipients or donors, HHV-6 was inherited through chromosomal integration. Although HHV-6 chromosomal integration has not been associated with disease, the resulting very high levels of HHV-6 DNA in human tissue and blood samples can be challenging to interpret in the transplant setting. This review addresses the recent findings regarding the clinical outcomes associated with HHV-6

Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV), that is actually a porcine roseolovirus (PRV), is a common herpesvirus in domestic pigs and wild boars. In xenotransplantation, PCMV/PRV has been shown to significantly reduce the survival time of pig kidneys and hearts in preclinical trials with different non-human primates. Furthermore, PCMV/PRV has been transmitted in the first pig to human heart xenotransplantation and contributed to the death of the patient. Although transmitted to the recipient, there is no evidence that PCMV/PRV can infect primate cells including human cells. PCMV/PRV is closely related t

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) is a rare Guillain-Barré variant defined by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia. Pediatric MFS is uncommon, and infectious triggers remain underrecognized. Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is neurotropic but rarely linked to immune-mediated neuropathies. In this paper, we describe a child with MFS associated with HHV-6 detected in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and review reported pediatric infections related to MFS.
METHODS: A 5-year-old girl presented with acute ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and diminished reflexes. Neuroimaging, ophthalmologic tests,

A 68-year-old man was diagnosed as drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS) with erythema and liver dysfunction three weeks after an administration of phenobarbital. Three weeks after the appearance of skin eruptions, the patient developed disturbed consciousness and status epilepticus. MRI findings revealed bilateral symmetrical abnormalities localized in the amygdala, hippocampi, parahippocampal gyri, and insula regions, which showed high intensities on diffusion weighted images and decreased apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values on an ADC map. We considered that the MRI abnormali

Members of the human Herpesviridae family are candidates for representing the macroenvironmental factors associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis. To verify the possible role of human herpesviruses (HHVs) as triggering or aggravating factors in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis clinical outcome, we studied the prevalence of all eight human herpesviruses in whole blood samples collected from 51 MS patients and from 51 healthy controls. The presence of DNA of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2), varicella zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human cyt

OBJECTIVE: Inner ear inflammation triggered by CMV infection may play a role in CMV-related auditory pathogenesis. The purpose of the study was to determine if a virally encoded macrophage inflammatory protein played a role in CMV-related hearing loss.
DESIGN: Mutagenesis was performed with deletion of a guinea pig CMV macrophage inflammatory protein. Intracochlear inoculations were performed on three groups of animals (n = 18). Group 1 received sterile viral media, Group 2 received wild-type CMV virus, and Group 3 received "knockout" (KO) virus with a deleted immunomodulation gene. Baseline

UNLABELLED: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a leading cause of mental retardation and deafness in newborns. The guinea pig is the only small animal model for congenital CMV infection. A novel CMV vaccine was investigated as an intervention strategy against congenital guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) infection. In this disabled infectious single-cycle (DISC) vaccine strategy, a GPCMV mutant virus was used that lacked the ability to express an essential capsid gene (the UL85 homolog GP85) except when grown on a complementing cell line. In vaccinated animals, the GP85 mutant virus

Endogenous human herpesvirus 6 (eHHV-6) is integrated into the genomes of approximately 1% of individuals and has been linked to angina pectoris which, like myocardial infarction (MI), generally denotes coronary artery disease. To investigate this association further, we screened 2976 genomic DNA samples from patients with MI for eHHV-6 using multiplex qPCR. We identified 17 eHHV-6-positive individuals (0.57%), including 6 with eHHV-6A, 10 with eHHV-6B, and 1 with the solo-DR form, an eHHV-6B variant characterized by the presence of a single direct repeat (DR) within the host genome. BACKGROUND: The most common causative pathogen of acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) was reported as HHV-6. Although excitotoxic injury with delayed neuronal death is considered to be a possible pathogenesis of AESD, the detailed pathophysiology remains unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a twelve-month-old girl with AESD due to HHV-6 primary infection. She was successfully treated for AESD including targeted temperature management and the administration of vitamin B1, B6, and L-carnitine. Although the viral load of HHV-6 in her liquor was high (1

A 27-year-old man presenting with recurrent meningitis associated with the activation of hepatitis was reported. Although he showed headache only, he was diagnosed as viral meningitis with high transaminase activities on admission. Human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6) DNA was revealed in the liver tissue by the polymerase chain reaction. This case was considered viral meningitis with HHV-6 associated hepatitis. It is suggested that the importance of viral evaluations not only herpes virus type 1 x 2, cytomegaro virus and EB virus, but also HHV-6 infection in a case of recurrent meningitis with hepatit

BACKGROUND Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a common pathogen known to cause roseola infantum in children and encephalitis in immunocompromised individuals. In immunocompetent children, HHV-6 encephalitis is rare and typically self-limiting. Although neurological symptoms such as seizures and altered consciousness have been reported, neuropsychiatric manifestations - particularly catatonia - are extremely uncommon. CASE REPORT A 4-year-old immunocompetent boy presented with sudden behavioral changes 1 week after a viral infection. Cerebrospinal fluid testing showed HHV-6 positivity. His symptoms

PURPOSE: Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infections are primarily observed in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or organ transplant recipients. However, its role as a pathogen in immunocompetent adults remains debated. We aimed to explore the clinical significance of HHV-6 in immunocompetent individuals by presenting a case of HHV-6-associated meningitis with concurrent lymphadenitis.
METHOD: We describe a case of an immunocompetent adult presenting with recurrent fever and headaches.
FINDING: Diagnostic evaluations included next-generation sequ

Primary human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection is sometimes accompanied by acute encephalopathy with reduced subcortical diffusion (AED) in immunocompetent children. We investigated exosomal microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and sera of patients with HHV-6-associated AED (n = 5) and febrile seizure (FS) (n = 5) using high-throughput sequencing. A total of 176 and 663 miRNAs were identified in CSF and serum exosomes, respectively. Comparative analysis determined that some miRNAs (miR-381-3p, miR-155) were exclusively expressed in the CSF exosomes of AED but not of
