A cross-sectional sample of 121 colony-born saddle-back tamarins, Saguinus fuscicollis, was examined to identify the sequence and timing of dental eruption and epiphyseal union. The state of dental development of the deciduous and permanent dentitions was recorded as erupted or non-erupted on the basis of gingival penetration. Eighteen areas of union of long bone epiphyseal and other secondary centers, the union of the primary elements of the innominate, and the spheno-occipital synchondrosis were examined. The state of union at the areas was recorded on a three-point scale of not united, unit

GB virus-B (GBV-B) is the virus most closely related to hepatitis C virus (HCV). Thus, we have used GBV-B infection of tamarins, which develop acute hepatitis following experimental infection, as a surrogate model to study protective immunity. As challenge virus, we first produced a GBV-B pool from an infected tamarin, which was not infected with the related GBV-A viruses. Its infectivity titer was 10(6.6) tamarin 50% infectious doses per ml. Next, two tamarins that were convalescent from recombinant GBV-B infection were re-challenged. In the original infection viremia persisted for 8 and 12 w

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Yellow fever (YF) is an acute infectious disease caused by the yellow fever virus which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Neotropical primates are susceptible to infection, which is often presented as epizootic outbreaks. The aim was to evaluate and characterize the immune response against YF in different species of neotropical primates from the Belo Horizonte Zoo.
METHODS: Vaccine 17DD was administered to 24 neotropical primates, with a single subcutaneous dose. Clinical exams, RNAemia, and detection of IgG and neutralizing antibodies against YFV were performed. In addition

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic and often fatal protozoal disease that is endemic in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil). Leishmania sp. is an intracellular obligatory parasite of macrophages that can naturally infect several mammalian species. Non-human primates (NHP) have been used as experimental models for infection with Leishmania of the donovani complex. The present report describes a case of visceral leishmaniasis in a black-fronted titi. Among 41 primates kept in captivity in a zoo in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil), one animal, a black-fronted titi (

Three tamarins (Saguinus labiatus), two of which had previously been infected with hepatitis A virus and parenteral non-A, non-B hepatitis, were inoculated intravenously with the agent of GB hepatitis. All three animals developed alanine aminotransferase abnormalities 2 weeks after inoculation. Peak alanine aminotransferase levels were recorded 4 weeks postinoculation. These declined thereafter but continued to fluctuate at abnormal levels for 32 weeks. Liver biopsies showed liver cell swelling and inflammation with focal necrosis. Portal tracts and areas around central veins were heavily infi

Twin, white-fronted marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) born and raised in a zoo in Japan died at 7 mo of age. Several encapsulated nematode larvae were detected in the intestinal wall, as well as a few in the mesenteric lymph nodes of 1 of the twins. In the other marmoset, no encapsulated nematode larva was detected in the organs, but many adult Pterygodermatites nycticebi were found in the intestinal lumen. In the past 5 yr, 5 primates kept in the same zoo, i.e., 1 squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), 2 Pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea), 1 Senegal galago (Galago senegalensis), and 1 cotton-top

This article reviews a long-term investigation into the roles of (1) experience obtained with infants during development and postnatally, and (2) levels of reproductive-steroid hormones during late pregnancy, in the regulation of maternal caregiving motivation and behaviour in the red-bellied tamarin (Saguinus labiatus) and the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) (family Callitrichidae, Order Primates). Both observational studies, e.g. post hoc analysis of the relationship between developmental caregiving experience and infant-rearing success, and manipulative studies, e.g. direct analysis of

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Little is currently known about the relationship between family history of colon cancer and ulcerative colitis-associated colon cancer. A nested case-control study was performed to evaluate the association between family history of colon cancer and spontaneously occurring colon cancer in cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus).
METHODS: Subjects were chosen from a colony of cotton-top tamarins held in captivity between 1968 and 1995. The cancer status of parents and grandparents was compared for 48 animals with colon cancer and 58 controls, all with histological confirmation

OBJECTIVE: Detecting antibodies against Leptospira spp. in Neotropical primates and workers in a Colombian Zoo and identifying the risk factors associated with the disease.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed regarding 65 Neotropical primates and 20 zookeepers. The samples were processed by microagglutination test (MAT) using a reference strain collection consisting of 21 Leptospira serovars. The people being evaluated were given a structured survey to identify risk factors.
RESULTS: There was 25 % (5/20) Leptospira spp. infection seroprevalence in the staff and 23.07 % (15/65) in

The presence of a vermiform appendix is often cited as a shared, derived character uniting the Hominoidea (apes and humans). However, appendix-like structures have been reported for many other primate taxa. A review of the literature reveals that the confusion arises because several different, and sometimes contradictory, criteria are enlisted to distinguish an appendix. The measures most frequently used to define this structure are gross shape and certain aspects of histology (e.g., lymphoid concentration). Unfortunately, descriptions of shape lack quantification, and histological thin-sectio

Moustached marmosets (Saguinus mystax) were infected intranasally with either of two low-passaged, wildlike strains of measles virus, strain Edmonston or strain JM. The infection resulted in 25 and 100% mortality, respectively, 12 to 14 days after infection. Clinical signs, gross pathological findings, and histology lacked the characteristic features of measles in other primates. A deficient immune response and widespread gastroenterocolitis appeared to be the main causes for the fatal outcome. Fluorescent-antibody staining detected large amounts of measles antigen in lymphatic tissues, the ga

The morphological constraint hypothesis suggests that primates with less dexterity show more consistent motor planning because there is less flexibility to compensate for inefficient actions. Spiders monkeys offer a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis because they do not have a functional thumb. Colombian spider monkeys (Ateles fusciceps rufiventris, n=8) housed at a wildlife park were tested on a standard motor planning task. A trial began when a dowel baited on one end was placed on an elevated apparatus and ended when a monkey grasped the dowel with the hands. Grip use was coded from

Twelve marmosets (Saguinus mystax) were inoculated intravenously (iv) with hepatitis A virus (HAV). One died early (day 12); seven were sacrificed at the time of elevation in level of alanine aminotransferase (serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase), and four without elevation were not sacrificed but seroconverted. In the seven marmosets sacrificed during the acute stage of illness, hepatitis A antigen (HA Ag) was detected in the liver by immunofluorescence in all cases, by immune electron microscopy in four, and by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in three. The HA Ag appeared by immunof

BACKGROUND: Barbiturate euthanasia solutions are a humane and approved means of euthanasia. Overdosing causes significant tissue damage in a variety of laboratory animals.
METHODS: One hundred seventeen non-human primates (NHP) representing 7 species including 12 fetuses euthanized for humane and research reasons by various vascular routes with Euthasol, Sodium Pentobarbital, Fatal Plus, Beuthanasia D, or Euthanasia 5 were evaluated for euthanasia-induced tissue damage. Lungs and livers were histologically graded for hemolysis, vascular damage, edema, and necrosis. Severity of tissue damage w

Six cotton-topped marmoset monkeys (Sangiunus oedipus) were inoculated with 10(5) transforming units of B95-8 virus, and two of them developed fatal lymphoproliferative disease. The EBV-carrying tumor cells from these marmosets had the following characteristics: (1) they were polyclonal by surface immunoglobulin and immunoglobulin production in vitro; (2) they had no specific chromosome abnormalities, and (3) they failed to form colonies in large percentages in agarose. It is proposed that a spectrum of phenotypes of EBV-induced lymphoproliferative diseases in the cotton-topped marmosets may b

New World primates (NWPs) have high circulating 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25-(OH)2D) levels. Comparable levels would be harmful to Old World primates (OWPs) and humans. Thus, NWPs must have developed mechanisms of 1,25-(OH)2D resistance to survive. In humans, patients with hypocalcemic vitamin D-resistant rickets type II have high circulating vitamin D levels and vitamin D resistance due to expression of a dysfunctional vitamin D receptor (VDR). To examine if this could wholly or in part explain vitamin D resistance in NWPs, VDR from Saguinus oedipus (cotton top tamarin) NWP B95-8 cells was c

Primates have X chromosome genes for cone photopigments with sensitivity maxima from 535 to 562 nm. Old World monkeys and apes (catarrhines) and the New World (platyrrhine) genus Alouatta have separate genes for 535-nm (medium wavelength; M) and 562-nm (long wavelength; L) pigments. These pigments, together with a 425-nm (short wavelength) pigment, permit trichromatic color vision. Other platyrrhines and prosimians have a single X chromosome gene but often with alleles for two or three M/L photopigments. Consequently, heterozygote females are trichromats, but males and homozygote females are d

Necropsies performed between 1989 and 1995 on 15 African rope squirrels (Funisciurus substriatus) and 20 African ground squirrels (Xerus erythropus) from the Baltimore Zoo revealed 13 cases of gongylonemiasis. Nematodes were embedded in the epithelium of the esophagus, pharynx, buccal mucosa, and tongue, resulting in varying degrees of esophagitis, pharyngitis, stomatitis, and glossitis, respectively. Routine fecal examinations were negative, and the nematodes appeared to be unaffected by repeated treatments with ivermectin. Most of the affected animals had shown clinical signs of dyspnea and/

Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease with multiple serogroups that infects wildlife and humans alike. Several studies have detected the presence of leptospiral antibodies in captive Neotropical primates, suggesting that they are asymptomatic carriers. However, the presence of antibodies in free-ranging primates and their potential role as reservoirs for this pathogen is not known. In this study, we used the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) to screen two species of free-ranging tamarins for the presence of Leptospira antibodies using a panel of 21 serogroups. A total of 56 primates

In anthropoid primates, it has been hypothesized that the magnitude of maxillary sinus growth is influenced by adjacent dental and soft tissue matrices. Relatively, little comparative evidence exists for the perinatal period when secondary pneumatization is at its earliest stages in some primates. Here, dental and midfacial variables were studied in a perinatal sample of four anthropoid primates, including three callitrichines (Leontopithecus, Saguinus, and Callithrix) and Saimiri boliviensis. In the latter species, the maxillary recess (the ontogenetic precursor to a "true" maxillary sinus) d
