Reflections of hunger and satiation in the structure of temporal organization of slow electrical and spike activities of fundal and antral stomach muscles in rabbits.

Manifestations of hunger and satiation in myoelectric activity patterns in different portions of the stomach were studied in chronic experiments. The state of hunger manifested in the structure of temporal organization of slow electric activity of muscles in the stomach body and antrum in the form of bimodal distributions of slow electric wave periods, while satiation as unimodal distribution. In hunger-specific bimodal distribution of slow electric wave periods generated by muscles of the stomach body and antrum, the position of the first maximum carries the information about oncoming food re

[Comparative data on the tick-borne encephalitis virus infectiousness of hungry and satiated taiga ticks (based on the results of an immunoenzyme analysis)].

The results of individual investigation of 25,500 Ixodes persulcatus ticks from east Siberia are presented. The ticks were collected from grass, men, and animals before their sticking and after feeding at different intervals. The quantity of positive specimens was 6-11 times higher among the fed ticks hungry ones and averaged 10.36 and 1.85%, respectively, at the first stage due to the higher aggression of the infected females at the first stage and due to viral replication when the tick had feed and its better recognition as the titers increased. The proportion of ticks having high levels of

Impact of a mineral enriched, fiber complex on glycaemic response and satiation in healthy adults: a double-blind, crossover intervention study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of a chromium-enriched glucomannan-fructooligosaccharide complex (SB) on glycaemic and insulin responses, satiation, and hunger biomarkers in healthy adults. METHODS: Using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised crossover design, we assessed the acute impact of a single 3 g SB dose in 16 healthy adults (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) during a modified oral glucose tolerance test. On separate days, participants consumed 50 g dextrose or 50 g dextrose with 3 g SB (SBD). Blood glucose and insulin were analysed over 2.5 h. Hunger, fullness, and desire to eat were

Accounting for the role of the gastro-intestinal tract in the ammonia and urea nitrogen dynamics of freshwater rainbow trout on long-term satiation feeding.

The contribution of the gut to the ingestion, production, absorption and excretion of the extra ammonia and urea nitrogen (urea-N) associated with feeding ('exogenous' fraction) has received limited attention. Analysis of commercial pellet food revealed appreciable concentrations of ammonia and urea-N. Long-term satiation feeding increased whole-trout ammonia and urea-N excretion rates by 2.5-fold above fasting levels. Blood was sampled from the dorsal aorta, posterior, mid- and anterior sub-intestinal veins, as well as the hepatic portal vein in situ. Ammonia, urea-N and fluid flux rates were

Effects of NK1 receptors on gastric motor functions and satiation in healthy humans: results from a controlled trial with the NK1 antagonist aprepitant.

Aprepitant, an NK1 receptor antagonist, is approved for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced or postoperative emesis by blocking NK1 receptors in the brain stem vomiting center. The effects of NK1 receptors on gastric functions and postprandial symptoms in humans are unclear; a single, crossover study did not show a significant effect of aprepitant on gastrointestinal transit. Our aim was to compare, in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study (12 healthy volunteers per group), the effects of aprepitant vs. placebo on gastric emptying of solids (by scintigraphy) wi

A high-fat diet attenuates the central response to within-meal satiation signals and modifies the receptor expression of vagal afferents in mice.

During digestion, macronutrients are sensed within the small intestine. This sensory process is dependent upon the action of gut mediators, such as cholecystokinin (CCK) or serotonin (5-HT), on vagal afferents that, in turn, convey peripheral information to the brain to influence the control of food intake. Recent studies have suggested that dietary conditions alter vagal sensitivity to CCK and 5-HT. This phenomenon may be of importance to the onset of eating disorders. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate the effects of subjecting mice to 15 days of either an HF diet (30% fat,

Effects of electrical stimulation of the hunger center in the lateral hypothalamus and food reinforcement on impulse activity of the stomach in rabbits under conditions of hunger and satiation.

Stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus in preliminary fed animals in the presence of the food is associated with successful food-procuring behavior, accompanied by regular generation of high-amplitude slow electrical waves by muscles of the lesser curvature, body, and antrum of the stomach, which was reflected in the structure of temporal organization of slow electrical activity in the form of unimodal distribution of slow wave periods typical of satiation state. Despite increased level of food motivation caused by stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus, the additional food intake completely

Foods comprising equal amounts of carbohydrate and fat are expected to be less satiating (yet more rewarding) than those comprising predominantly fat or carbohydrate.

Combining fat and carbohydrate (carb) increases food reward. Previously, we reasoned that a mechanism is reduced satiety - foods comprising a more equal ratio of carb and fat deliver less satiety per calorie. In an initial test of this theory, we completed two online data collections, one in the US (N = 148 participants, 36 foods) and one in the UK (N = 150 participants, 24 foods). In both, participants evaluated high-carb, high-fat, and 'combo' (equal fat/carb) foods. Consistent with our preregistered hypotheses, in both studies, combo foods were (1) rated more liked (taste pleasantness: UK C

The effect of short-term, low-dose tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressant treatment on satiation, postnutrient load gastrointestinal symptoms and gastric emptying: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for patients with functional dyspepsia. However, the effect of tricyclic antidepressants on satiation and gastric emptying remains unclear, and there are no data for tetracyclic compounds. To compare the effects of nortriptyline (maximum dose: 50 mg daily) and mirtazapine (30 mg daily) vs placebo on gastric emptying, gastric satiation and postprandial symptoms after a nutrient load in healthy volunteers. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated gastric function before and after 14 days of nortriptyline (n = 13), mirtazapine (n = 13),

Preliminary data that psychological treatment and baseline anxiety are associated with a decrease in postprandial fullness and early satiation for individuals with bulimia nervosa and related other specified feeding or eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly postprandial fullness, are frequently reported in eating disorders. Limited data exist evaluating how these symptoms change in response to outpatient psychological treatment. The current study sought to describe the course of postprandial fullness and early satiation across psychological treatment for adults with bulimia nervosa and related other specified feeding or eating disorders and to test if anxiety moderates treatment response. METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted on questionnaire data provided by 30 individuals (80% white,

Effects of electric stimulation of the hunger center in the lateral hypothalamus on slow electric activity and spike activity of fundal and antral stomach muscles in rabbits under conditions of hunger and satiation.

In chronic experiments on rabbits, the effect of electric stimulation of the hunger center in the lateral hypothalamus on myoelectric activity of the fundal and antral parts of the stomach was studied under conditions of hunger and satiation in the absence of food. Stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus in rabbits subjected to 24-h food deprivation and in previously fed rabbits produced incessant seeking behavior, which was followed by reorganization of the structure of temporal organization of slow wave electric activity of muscles of the stomach body and antrum specific for hungry and satia

Erythritol, sucrose, and sucralose elicit similar reward responses after flavor preference learning in healthy humans.

Utilizing artificial low-caloric sweeteners as sugar alternatives remains controversial, as they provide sweet taste and the associated rewarding responses but fail to stimulate satiation. Erythritol, a non-caloric bulk sweetener, is able to stimulate the release of gastrointestinal (GI) satiation hormones, yet its influence on reward responses is inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate reward responses to erythritol, sucrose, and sucralose during and after flavor preference learning, and to explore the potential involvement of GI satiation hormones. In this randomized, double-b

Overfeeding-induced ovarian dysfunction in broiler breeder hens is associated with lipotoxicity.

In mammals, triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in nonadipose tissue, termed lipotoxicity, develops with obesity and can provoke insulin resistance, overt diabetes, and ovarian dysfunction. Leptin, an adipose tissue hormone, may mediate these effects. Feed-satiated broiler breeder hens manifest lipotoxicity-like symptoms. Changes in body and organ weights, hepatic and plasma TAG, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), ovarian morphology, and egg production in response to acute voluntary increases of feed intake were measured in 2 studies with Cobb 500 broiler breeder hens provided with either 145 or

Identification of risk factors and the pattern of lower cervical lymph node metastasis in esophageal cancer: implications for radiotherapy target delineation.

During the rearing period, fish may be exposed to fasting due to low or high temperatures, transportation, handling, and other stressors, while they may catch-up the growth differently after supplying the feed. The aim of this study was to investigate the compensatory growth (CG) response of juvenile Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii after restricted feeding. In the first phase (60 days), triplicate groups of fish were subjected to feed restriction (25%, 50%, and 75% of the amount needed to reach satiation, respectively) or satiation feeding (control) and in the second phase all treatment gro

Acorn crop size and pre-dispersal predation determine inter-specific differences in the recruitment of co-occurring oaks.

The contribution of pre-dispersal seed predation to inter-specific differences in recruitment remains elusive. In species with no resistance mechanisms, differences in pre-dispersal predation may arise from differences in seed abundance (plant satiation) or in the ability of seeds to survive insect infestation (seed satiation). This study aimed to analyse the impact of pre-dispersal acorn predation by weevils in two co-occurring Mediterranean oaks (Quercus ilex and Quercus humilis) and to compare its relevance with other processes involved in recruitment. We monitored the patterns of acorn pro

[Ghrelin and the gastro-hypothalamic axis].

Obesity is currently considered one of the most important diseases worldwide due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. The mechanisms involved in the control of satiation, body weight and energy expenditure has led to the discovery of new hormones that participate in the gastrichypothalamic axis in charge of regulating satiation and other obesity-related processes. Ghrelin a novel hormone secreted mainly by gastric tissue, has shed some light on this mechanism. It is a hormone that regulates satiation and body weight by centrally mediated mechanisms, involving neuropeptide Y and Agouti as

Distraction decreases rIFG-putamen connectivity during goal-directed effort for food rewards.

Distracted eating can lead to increased food intake, but it is unclear how. We aimed to assess how distraction affects motivated, goal-directed responses for food reward after satiation. Thirty-eight healthy normal-weight participants (28F; 10M) performed a visual detection task varying in attentional load (high vs. low distraction) during fMRI. Simultaneously, they exerted effort for sweet and savory food rewards by repeated button presses. Two fMRI runs were separated by sensory-specific satiation (outcome devaluation) of one of the (sweet or savory) reward outcomes, to assess outcome-sensit

Time-dependent changes in feeding behavior and energy balance associated with weight gain in mice fed obesogenic diets.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is characterized by dysregulated homeostatic mechanisms resulting in positive energy balance; however, when this dysregulation occurs is unknown. We assessed the time course of alterations to behaviors promoting weight gain in male and female mice switched to an obesogenic high-fat diet (HFD). METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6J mice were housed in metabolic chambers and were switched from chow to a 60% or 45% HFD for 4 and 3 weeks, respectively. Food intake, meal patterns, energy expenditure (EE), and body weight were continuously measured. A separate cohort of male mice was

Heroin delay discounting: Modulation by pharmacological state, drug-use impulsivity, and intelligence.

Delay discounting (DD) refers to how rapidly an individual devalues goods based on delays to receipt. DD usually is considered a trait variable but can be state dependent, yet few studies have assessed commodity valuation at short, naturalistically relevant time intervals that might enable state-dependent analysis. This study aimed to determine whether drug-use impulsivity and intelligence influence heroin DD at short (ecologically relevant) delays during two pharmacological states (heroin satiation and withdrawal). Out-of-treatment, intensive heroin users (n = 170; 53.5% African American; 66.

O-GlcNAc transferase couples nutrient availability to synaptic plasticity in paraventricular neurons to regulate satiety.

Satiation is essential for energy homeostasis and is dysregulated in metabolic disorders like obesity and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. While satiation engages a large neural network across brain regions, how the communication within this network depends on metabolic fluctuations is unclear. This study shows that nutrient access can affect neuron-to-neuron communication in this network by regulating excitatory synaptic plasticity through O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) in αCaMKII satiation neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Using cell-specific knockout mice and electrophysio
