How mathematical forms of chemotherapy and radiotherapy bias model-optimized predictions: Implications for model selection.

The move towards personalized treatment and digital twins for cancer therapy requires a complete understanding of the mathematical models upon which these optimized simulation-based strategies are formulated. This study investigates the influence of mathematical model selection on the optimization of chemotherapy and radiotherapy protocols. By examining three chemotherapy models (log-kill, Norton-Simon, and maximum efficacy), and three radiotherapy models (linear-quadratic, proliferation saturation index, and continuous death-rate), we identify similarities and significant differences in the o

Privacy-enhancing sequential learning under heterogeneous selection bias in multi-site electronic health records data.

OBJECTIVES: To develop privacy-enhancing statistical methods for estimating disease risk parameters across multiple electronic health record (EHR) sites with heterogeneous selection mechanisms, avoiding individual-level data sharing. We illustrate their utility via a cross-biobank analysis of smoking and 97 cancer subtypes using NIH All of Us (AOU) and Michigan Genomics Initiative (MGI) data sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Distributed health platforms often render centralized algorithms infeasible due to patient privacy protection. We propose Sequential Pseudo-Likelihood (SPL) and Sequential Au

Proper reference selection and re-referencing to mitigate bias in single pulse electrical stimulation data.

Single pulse electrical stimulation experiments produce pulse-evoked potentials used to infer brain connectivity. The choice of recording reference for intracranial electrodes remains non-standardized and can significantly impact data interpretation. When the reference electrode is affected by stimulation or evoked brain activity, it can contaminate the pulse-evoked potentials recorded at all other electrodes and influence interpretation of findings. We highlight this specific issue in intracranial EEG datasets from two subjects recorded at separate institutions. We present several intuitive m

Decision-Making And Selection Bias in Four Observational Studies on Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Natural history data are essential for trial design in Duchenne (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD), but recruitment for observational studies can be challenging. OBJECTIVE: We reviewed reasons why patients or caregivers declined participation, and compared characteristics of participants and non-participants to assess possible selection bias in four observational studies, three on DMD and one on BMD. METHODS: Three pediatric DMD studies focused on cross-sectional cognitive function and brain MRI (DMDbrain, n = 35 and DMDperfusion, n = 12), and on longitudinal upper extremi

Reduced efficacy of natural selection on codon usage bias in selfing Arabidopsis and Capsella species.

Population genetic theory predicts that the efficacy of natural selection in a self-fertilizing species should be lower than its outcrossing relatives because of the reduction in the effective population size (N(e)) in the former brought about by inbreeding. However, previous analyses comparing Arabidopsis thaliana (selfer) with A. lyrata (outcrosser) have not found conclusive support for this prediction. In this study, we addressed this issue by examining silent site polymorphisms (synonymous and intronic), which are expected to be informative about changes in N(e). Two comparisons were made:

Requirement for written informed consent and selection bias in a chart-review prostate cancer study.

Although retrospective chart-review studies are typically performed using a waiver of written informed consent, many institutional review boards (IRB) do not approve such waivers for chart-review studies using prospective enrollment, which could introduce selection bias in participant characteristics and outcomes, thereby impairing representativeness and validity. We aim to determine this bias in a chart-review prostate cancer (PCa) study using prospective enrollment. Using an IRB-approved chart-review protocol with a waiver of written informed consent for prospective enrollment, we identified

Selection bias in follow-up interviews with individuals attending the emergency department for occupational injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether supplementary interview participation was comparable for occupationally injured patients attending two hospital emergency departments and to investigate the magnitude of selection bias in relation to sex, age, severity, job tasks and industry risk level. METHODS: Workers aged 18-70 years who contacted the two emergency departments for an acute occupational injury in 2013 were eligible and given a short questionnaire. Following written consent, a semi-structured interview concerning health and transient risk factors was conducted by telephone. The two departments

Potential selection bias in a community-based study of PSA levels in African-American men.

The first phase of the Flint Men's Health Study (FMHS) in Michigan was a community-based epidemiologic study of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in African-Americans aged 40 to 79 years. An objective of the FMHS was to determine age-specified prostate specific antigen (PSA) reference ranges in a random population sample of African-American men without clinically evident prostate cancer. The FMHS study protocol included an initial in-home epidemiologic interview followed by PSA testing and a urologic examination of eligible subjects. Since the participation rate in the PSA

Gender bias in urology: The role of gender in selecting urology as a medical specialty.

BACKGROUND: Gender inequality has been prevalent in the history of medicine, specifically within surgical specialties. Although there have been advances, urology has remained overwhelmingly male-dominant, with slow growth in female recruitment. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to assess whether the gender influences selection of medical specialty, especially gender bias in urology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate medical students in Saudi Arabian medical schools to explore the influence of gender on urology specialty selection. Fear-relevant selective associations and social anxiety: absence of a positive bias.

An illusory correlation paradigm was used to compare high and low socially anxious individuals' initial, on-line and a posteriori covariation estimates between emotional faces and aversive, pleasant and neutral outcomes. Overall, participants demonstrated an initial expectancy bias for aversive outcomes following angry faces, and pleasant outcomes following happy faces. On-line expectancy biases indicated that initial biases were extinguished during the task, with the exception of low socially anxious individuals who continued to over-associate positive social cues with pleasant outcomes. In a

Absence of translationally selected synonymous codon usage bias in Helicobacter pylori.

Synonymous codon usage in the complete genome of Helicobacter pylori was investigated. The moderate A+T-richness of the genome (G+C=39 mol%) is reflected in the overall synonymous codon usage but the frequencies of some codons cannot be explained by simple mutational biases. A low level of heterogeneity among genes was observed, but this does not appear to be due to varying mutational bias or translational selection. Some of the heterogeneity was due to amino acid composition variation among the encoded proteins, and some may be attributable to recent acquisition of genes from other species. S

Cognitive heuristics in the operating room: the role of 'left-digit bias' in ophthalmic surgical selection.

INTRODUCTION: Left-digit bias is a cognitive heuristic in which the leftmost digit of a number disproportionately influences judgment. This study evaluates the impact of perceived patient age on ophthalmic surgical decision-making. METHODS: Using a multicentre federated electronic health record network, patients aged 40-85 years with a routine health visit, followed by at least 1 documented ophthalmic examination and a diagnosis code specific to the surgical outcome under study, were followed for 1 year. Patients were grouped into consecutive 2-year age cohorts and matched 1:1 on demographic

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and brain morphology: Addressing potential selection bias with inverse probability weighting.

The goal of this study was to examine what happens to established associations between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and cortical surface and thickness regions once we apply inverse probability of censoring weighting (IPCW) to address potential selection bias. Moreover, we illustrate how different factors that predict participation contribute to potential selection bias. Participants were 9- to 11-year-old children from the Generation R study (N = 2707). Cortical area and thickness were measured with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ADHD symptoms with the Child B

True benefit or selection bias: an analysis of laparoscopic versus open splenectomy from the ACS-NSQIP.

BACKGROUND: By virtue of the benefits associated with minimally invasive approaches, laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is believed to have better patient-related outcomes compared to open splenectomy (OS). However, there are limited data directly comparing the two techniques. METHODS: Patients who underwent elective LS and OS between 2005 and 2010 were identified from the public use file of the ACS-NSQIP database using the Current Procedural Terminology codes 38120 and 38100. Patients who had concomitant procedures were excluded. Because of the nonrandom assignment of surgical techniques, a selec

An examination of bias in volunteer subject selection: findings from an in-depth child abuse study.

Remarkably few reported studies tested the assumption that a research sample can be constructed which is representative of the population of interest. In order to investigate potential volunteer bias in abuse research, we utilized a database assembled for an NIMH funded study investigating the relationship among adolescent physical abuse, suicidal behavior, and psychopathology. Extensive information was available concerning the nonparticipant pool from which this sample was assembled, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of possible sample bias. The volunteer sample of 99 abused families wh

A right-ear bias of auditory selective attention is evident in alpha oscillations.

Auditory selective attention makes it possible to pick out one speech stream that is embedded in a multispeaker environment. We adapted a cued dichotic listening task to examine suppression of a speech stream lateralized to the nonattended ear, and to evaluate the effects of attention on the right ear's well-known advantage in the perception of linguistic stimuli. After being cued to attend to input from either their left or right ear, participants heard two different four-word streams presented simultaneously to the separate ears. Following each dichotic presentation, participants judged whet

Bias in control selection associated with the use of rapid tests in influenza vaccine effectiveness studies.

BACKGROUND: In test-negative design (TND) studies that use rapid tests to estimate influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE), a common concern is case-control misclassification due to imperfect diagnostic accuracy. An imperfect test can also fail to exclude from the control group people infected with other influenza types or other vaccine-preventable respiratory viruses. We investigated these biases while evaluating VE for the 2023/24 seasonal influenza vaccination. METHODS: A TND study was conducted among outpatients aged ≥6 months of age who visited an outpatient clinic in Hong Kong between 15 D
