Mating suppresses sperm-dependent male avoidance in C. elegans hermaphrodites.

In many sexually reproducing animals, females incur higher reproductive costs and therefore tend to be more selective in accepting mates. In Caenorhabditis elegans, self-fertilizing hermaphrodites produce a limited number of self-sperm, and previous studies have suggested that hermaphrodites avoid males. However, the behavioral dynamics of this male-avoidance behavior remain largely unexplored and its underlying mechanisms are not well-understood. Here, I quantitatively analyzed male-avoidance behavior in C. elegans hermaphrodites by measuring locomotor speed in the presence of males. Automate

Chromosome-level genome assembly of the cottony cushion scale Icerya purchasi.

The cottony cushion scale, Icerya purchasi, a polyphagous pest, poses a significant threat to the global citrus industry. The hermaphroditic self-fertilization observed in I. purchasi is an exceptionally rare reproductive mode among insects. In this study, we successfully assembled a chromosome-level genome sequence for I. purchasi using PacBio long-reads and the Hi-C technique, resulting in a total size of 1,103.38 Mb and a contig N50 of 12.81 Mb. The genome comprises 14,046 predicted protein-coding genes, with 462,722,633 bp occurrence of repetitive sequences. BUSCO analysis revealed a compl

The Capsella rubella genome and the genomic consequences of rapid mating system evolution.

The shift from outcrossing to selfing is common in flowering plants, but the genomic consequences and the speed at which they emerge remain poorly understood. An excellent model for understanding the evolution of self fertilization is provided by Capsella rubella, which became self compatible <200,000 years ago. We report a C. rubella reference genome sequence and compare RNA expression and polymorphism patterns between C. rubella and its outcrossing progenitor Capsella grandiflora. We found a clear shift in the expression of genes associated with flowering phenotypes, similar to that seen in

Fertility Issues for Patients with Hypogonadotropic Causes of Delayed Puberty.

Delayed puberty presenting with low gonadotropins has multiple causes. Self-limited delay (constitutional delay) is generally considered benign, but adult height and bone mineral density may be compromised, and fertility has not been studied. Functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism due to a stressor is thought to resolve with removal of the stressor, but reproductive endocrine dysfunction can sometimes persist. Most but not all patients with idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a typically long-lasting condition, can achieve fertility with exogenous hormone therapy. Future studies are ne

Advances in the Knowledge of the Reproductive Processes of the Critically Endangered Pinna nobilis Linnaeus, 1758.

As part of conservation efforts for Pinna nobilis, a critically endangered bivalve endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, laboratory programs have been developed to maintain and breed specimens. However, progress in the ex situ conservation of the species remains limited and challenging. This study aims to advance the knowledge required to establish effective reproductive protocols for P. nobilis, specifically focusing on the population in the Mar Menor lagoon, one of the last two surviving populations along the Spanish coast. The first phase of this study involved characterizing the reproductive e

Diet and female fertility: a population-based study re-evaluating the need for prescriptive dietary patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Diet may impact female fertility via inflammatory pathways, but the value of specific anti-inflammatory dietary indices compared with general healthy eating guidelines is unclear. We examined associations between different measures of dietary inflammation and diet quality with female infertility in a large population-based study. METHODS: Data for 5,489 participants from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health were analysed (1973-1978 cohort assessed in 2009, at 31-36 years old; n = 1,289 fertility problems, n = 4,200 no fertility problems). Mechanisms of Sperm-Egg Interactions: What Ascidian Fertilization Research Has Taught Us.

Fertilization is an essential process in terrestrial organisms for creating a new organism with genetic diversity. Before gamete fusion, several steps are required to achieve successful fertilization. Animal spermatozoa are first activated and attracted to the eggs by egg-derived chemoattractants. During the sperm passage of the egg's extracellular matrix or upon the sperm binding to the proteinaceous egg coat, the sperm undergoes an acrosome reaction, an exocytosis of acrosome. In hermaphrodites such as ascidians, the self/nonself recognition process occurs when the sperm binds to the egg coa

Testing the efficacy of a narrative short film in educating the public about providing emotional support to individuals with fertility problems.

BACKGROUND: To educate the public on how best to support people with fertility problems, a narrative short film "Ten Things Not to Say to Someone Struggling with Infertility" was created, depicting the impact that helpful versus unhelpful dialogue has on someone with fertility problems. METHODS: Before and after watching the video, 419 participants from the public were presented with a hypothetical vignette describing a woman experiencing fertility problems and asked about the likelihood that they would endorse a series of helpful and unhelpful statements when communicating with the protagoni

Male secreted short glycoproteins link sperm competition to the reproductive isolation of species.

Sperm competition is found across multicellular organisms1,2,3,4 using both external and internal fertilization.5,6 Sperm competition and post-copulatory cryptic female choice can promote incompatibility between species due to the antagonistic coevolution of the sexes within a species.7,8,9,10,11 This between-species incompatibility is accelerated and markedly asymmetrical when sexual mode differs, producing the "weak inbreeder, strong outcrosser" (WISO) pattern.12 Here, we show that male secreted short (MSS) sperm glycoproteins of nematodes constitute a gametic effector of WISO. In obligately

Experimental insight into the proximate causes of male persistence variation among two strains of the androdioecious Caenorhabditis elegans (Nematoda).

BACKGROUND: In the androdioecious nematode Caenorhabditis elegans virtually all progeny produced by hermaphrodite self-fertilization is hermaphrodite while 50% of the progeny that results from cross-fertilization by a male is male. In the standard laboratory wild type strain N2 males disappear rapidly from populations. This is not the case in some other wild type isolates of C. elegans, among them the Hawaiian strain CB4856. RESULTS: We determined the kinetics of the loss of males over time for multiple population sizes and wild isolates and found significant differences. We performed systema

Global genomic diversity of the selfing nematode Caenorhabditis tropicalis correlates with geography.

Self-fertilization reduces genetic diversity compared to outcrossing and hypothetically decreases the ability to adapt to diverse environments. Among Caenorhabditis nematodes, self-fertilization evolved three times independently in Caenorhabditis elegans, Caenorhabditis briggsae, and the more recently discovered Caenorhabditis tropicalis. To survey C. tropicalis genetic relatedness, the influence of geography and niche on species-wide variation, and the signatures of selection, we collected 785 wild strains, sequenced their genomes, and identified 622 distinct genotypes (isotypes). In contrast

Recent speciation associated with the evolution of selfing in Capsella.

The evolution from outcrossing to predominant self-fertilization represents one of the most common transitions in flowering plant evolution. This shift in mating system is almost universally associated with the "selfing syndrome," characterized by marked reduction in flower size and a breakdown of the morphological and genetic mechanisms that prevent self-fertilization. In general, the timescale in which these transitions occur, and the evolutionary dynamics associated with the evolution of the selfing syndrome are poorly known. We investigated the origin and evolution of selfing in the annual

Female self-incompatibility type in heterostylous Primula is determined by the brassinosteroid-inactivating cytochrome P450 CYP734A50.

Most flowering plants are hermaphrodites, with flowers having both male and female reproductive organs. One widespread adaptation to limit self-fertilization is self-incompatibility (SI), where self-pollen fails to fertilize ovules.1,2 In homomorphic SI, many morphologically indistinguishable mating types are found, although in heteromorphic SI, the two or three mating types are associated with different floral morphologies.3-6 In heterostylous Primula, a hemizygous supergene determines a short-styled S-morph and a long-styled L-morph, corresponding to two different mating types, and full seed

Evaluating Self-Incompatibility in Citrus by Histological and Molecular Assays.

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a system used by flowering plants to prevent self-fertilization and promote outbreeding, ensuring genetic diversity. The system is regulated molecularly by the single polymorphic S-locus that expresses the male and female determinants that interact, inhibiting pollen germination or pollen tube growth when pollen from the same plant or genetically similar individuals reaches the stigma. Knowing the self-incompatible phenotype among cultivars is fundamental to ensuring fruit set or obtain seedless fruits in parthenocarpic species. Here we describe three techniques to
