How Semantic Memory Impacts Narrative Comprehension in Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

In the present study, we examined the differential contribution of semantic knowledge-specifically taxonomic and thematic-to narrative text comprehension in children with developmental dyslexia (DD) aged 8-10 years. Taxonomic knowledge refers to stimuli that are ontologically and logically related, hierarchically organised, linguistically encoded and independent of spatial or temporal links (e.g., the superordinate category animal with members such as lion, dog, or eagle). In contrast, thematic organisation involves stimuli that are related through contextual associations (e.g., meat, knife an

Changes in semantic fluency across childhood: Normative data from Australian-English speakers.

PURPOSE: Verbal fluency tests are often used as part of an assessment battery to investigate children's lexical knowledge as well as executive function skills. To date, however, issues surrounding consistency of measurement cloud comparisons across studies, with the developmental performance of Australian-English speaking children also currently lacking. This study tracked verbal fluency development as measured by two semantic fluency tasks that included coding of fluency, clustering and switching type responses. METHOD: Participants included 355 typically developing Australian-English speaki

Evaluation of the Cognitive Function of Adults with Severe Hearing Loss Pre- and Post-Cochlear Implantation Using Verbal Fluency Testing.

Hearing loss is a major public health problem with significant evidence correlating it with cognitive performance. Verbal fluency tests are commonly used to assess lexical access. They provide a great deal of information about a subject's cognitive function. The aim of our study was to evaluate phonemic and semantic lexical access abilities in adults with bilateral severe to profound hearing loss and then to re-evaluate a cohort after cochlear implantation. 103 adult subjects underwent phonemic and semantic fluency tests during a cochlear implant candidacy evaluation. Of the total 103 subjects

Dissociable electrophysiological correlates of semantic access of motor and non-motor concepts.

The notion of semantic embodiment posits that concepts are represented in the same neural sensorimotor systems that were involved in their acquisition. However, evidence in support of embodied semantics - in particular the hypothesised contribution of motor and premotor cortex to the representation of action concepts - is varied. Here, we tested the hypothesis that, consistent with semantic embodiment, sensorimotor cortices will rapidly become active while healthy participants access the meaning of visually-presented motor and non-motor action verbs. Event-related potentials revealed early dif

The contribution of language to the right-hemisphere conceptual representations: a selective survey.

Although levels of verbal and pictorial performance are known to depend on the degree of left versus right atrophy in the early stages of semantic dementia, the nature of these differences remains controversial. It has been proposed that there is a unitary, bilaterally represented, abstract semantic system and that differential task performance reflects the impact of greater connectivity between the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and the left dominant language systems. This interpretation explains the greater involvement of the left ATL in verbally coded semantic knowledge, but not the prev

The role of episodic memory in controlled evaluative judgments about attitudes: an event-related potential study.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) are unique in their ability to provide information about the timing of activity in the neural networks that perform complex cognitive processes. Given the dearth of extant data from normal controls on the question of whether attitude representations are stored in episodic or semantic memory, the goal here was to study the nature of the memory representations used during conscious attitude evaluations. Thus, we recorded ERPs while participants performed three tasks: attitude evaluations (i.e., agree/disagree), autobiographical cued recall (i.e., You/Not You) and

Learning Lexical Information Depends Upon Task, Learning Approach, and Reader Subtype.

Learning to read relies upon the integration of phonological, orthographic, and semantic information. However, no studies have investigated how children with varying reading abilities learn phonological-orthographic (PO) and semantic aspects of novel words as a function of both learning approach (LA; e.g., learning new words in isolation or context) and outcome (fluency or comprehension). In this study, 45 children participated in three tasks that differentially tested PO and semantic attributes of novel pseudo-words learned through two learning approaches. Children were classified into groups

Influence of conceptual knowledge on visual object discrimination: insights from semantic dementia and MTL amnesia.

Recent evidence suggests that the perirhinal cortex is involved in perception of complex objects with ambiguous features. Anterior regions of the temporal lobes, including the perirhinal cortex as well as lateral cortex, are also thought to play a critical role in semantic memory. To understand how semantic factors might contribute to perceptual discrimination of complex objects, we studied visual object discrimination in patients with semantic dementia (SD)-a neurodegenerative condition characterized by progressive deterioration of semantic knowledge and atrophy to anterior temporal lobes (in

Social-semantic knowledge in frontotemporal dementia and after anterior temporal lobe resection.

Degraded semantic memory is a prominent feature of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). It is classically associated with semantic dementia and anterior temporal lobe (ATL) atrophy, but semantic knowledge can also be compromised in behavioural variant FTD. Motivated by understanding behavioural change in FTD, recent research has focused selectively on social-semantic knowledge, with proposals that the right ATL is specialized for social concepts. Previous studies have assessed very different types of social concepts and have not compared performance with that of matched non-social concepts. Conseque

Communicative responsibility and semantic task in aphasia and "schizophasia".

A probe technique requiring convergent and divergent semantic behavior and representing five levels of communicative responsibility served as the research tool. Stimuli were presented to 29 asphasic adults (13 Broca's, 7 Wernicke's, and 9 anomic), 26 adults with chronic undifferentiated schizophrenia, and 32 normal elderly control subjects. Within each group significant differences were observed on the semantic task (convergent and divergent) and on level of communicative responsibility. Among subjects with aphasia, differences appeared to relate more to severity than type. Differences between

Utilizing semantic intrusions to identify amyloid positivity in mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Semantic intrusion (SI) errors may highlight specific breakdowns in memory associated with preclinical Alzheimer disease (AD); however, there have been no investigations to determine whether SI errors occur with greater frequency in persons with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) confirmed as amyloid positive (Amy+) vs those who have clinical symptoms of aMCI-AD with negative amyloid scans (suspected non-AD pathology [SNAP]) or persons who are diagnosed with other brain disorders affecting cognition. METHODS: Eighty-eight participants with aMCI underwent brain amyloid PET an

Temporal lobe lesions and semantic impairment: a comparison of herpes simplex virus encephalitis and semantic dementia.

Both herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) and semantic dementia (SD) typically affect anterior temporal lobe structures. Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), this study compared the structural damage in four HSVE patients having a semantic deficit particularly affecting knowledge of living things and six SD patients with semantic impairment across all categories tested. Each patient was assessed relative to a group of control subjects. In both patient groups, left anterior temporal damage extended into the amygdala. In patients with HSVE, extensive grey matter loss was observed predominant

Condom use history as a determinant of university students' condom evaluative index.

Researchers examined the mean sum scores of 15 semantic differential scales to specify the evaluative index assigned to the term condom by 173 undergraduate students at a large public university. Of interest was whether evaluative indices were different for men and women, and for condom ever-users versus never-users. There was no sex difference in semantic evaluation of condom. However, the mean sum score of persons with prior condom experience reflected a significantly more positive rating compared to persons who were never-users. Because use of condoms is associated with an evaluative index

Neuropsychological evidence for multiple memory systems.

Neuropsychological data provide strong support for the existence of multiple memory systems. The distinction between short-term memory and long-term memory has been discussed in the experimental literature for some years. More recently it has been argued that the concept of long-term memory is misleading in that it fails to differentiate between semantic memory and episodic/event memory. The independent and selective impairment of multiple memory systems, each with its own functional and structural properties, has been recorded in patients with cerebral lesions and the evidence for impairment

An objective and sensitive electrophysiological marker of word semantic categorization impairment in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Combining electroencephalographic (EEG) recording and fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) to provide an implicit, objective and sensitive electrophysiological measure of semantic word categorization impairment in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). METHODS: Twenty-five AD patients and 25 matched elderly healthy controls were tested with a validated FPVS-EEG paradigm in which different written words of the same semantic category (cities) appear at a fixed frequency of 4 words per second (4 Hz) for 70 seconds. Words from a different semantic category (animal) appear every 4 stimuli (i.e.,

Object identification deficits in dementia of the Alzheimer type: combined effects of semantic and visual proximity.

Identification deficits in dementia of the Alzheimer Type (DAT) often target specific classes of objects, sparing others. Using line drawings to uncover the etiology of such category-specific deficits may be untenable because the underlying shape primitives used to differentiate one line drawing from another are unspecified, and object form is yoked to object meaning. We used computer generated stimuli with empirically specifiable properties in a paradigm that decoupled form and meaning. In Experiment 1 visually similar or distinct blobs were paired with semantically close or disparate labels,

Multimodal semantic knowledge of emotion concepts in frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Recent work has delineated the semantic behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (sbvFTD; or right temporal variant of FTD, which is thought to preferentially impair semantic knowledge for emotional concepts. However, this proposed core feature has not yet been empirically validated, and no clinical tool exists to assess it. Establishing reliable markers is essential to clinically differentiate sbvFTD from behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), which is critical given their overlapping behavioral symptoms but divergent underlying pathologies. Furthermore, contrasting sbvFTD with sema

Semantic manifold-aware cross-modal similarity learning.

Image-text matching (ITM) methods typically rely on positive-negative sample discrimination to learn cross-modal similarity. However, when similarity computation is primarily built upon sequence-level and linear representations, samples that are semantically similar but differ in underlying structural relations often remain ambiguously separated, resulting in blurred decision boundaries. To address this limitation, we propose a Semantic Manifold-Aware Similarity Learning (SMSL) framework, where the term "semantic manifold" is used in an operational sense to denote a topology-aware organization

Memory performance used to detect radiation effects on cognitive functioning.

Although radiotherapy remains a necessary and frequently used treatmentfor brain tumors, uncertainty remains about the nature and severity of neurocognitive morbidity. We show that verbal-semantic memory (free recall of word list) is sensitive to damaging radiation effects in 20 patients with low-grade, supratentorial, primary brain tumors who received moderate doses of partial-brain irradiation. We previously reported that verbal-semantic memory is dissociated from visual memory (acquisition and recall) during the same phase ofradiation effects, indicating that memory is differentially affect
