Significance of a single umbilical artery in fetuses with central nervous system malformations.

To determine whether the presence of a single umbilical artery (SUA) is useful information for evaluating fetuses with known central nervous system (CNS) malformations, the present study reviewed 107 consecutive cases of fetal CNS malformations (hydrocephalus, meningomyelocele, Dandy-Walker malformation, and holoprosencephaly) identified by prenatal sonography. Of the 107 fetuses studied, 20 (18%) had a SUA noted at the time of delivery or autopsy and 87 (81.3%) had two umbilical arteries. Of the 20 fetuses with a SUA, six were prospectively recognized on sonography, six were identified retros

Single umbilical artery and risk of congenital malformation: population-based study in Norway.

OBJECTIVES: Single umbilical artery (SUA) is associated with congenital malformations in most organ systems, but reported findings have not been consistent. While it has been suggested that genetic and persisting environmental factors influence the development of SUA, it is not known whether there is an increased risk of recurrence in a subsequent pregnancy of the same woman. The aims of this study were to investigate the occurrence of, and risk factors for, SUA in Norway, to assess its association with congenital malformations and trisomies 13, 18 and 21 and to study the risk of recurrence of

The perinatal outcomes of asymptomatic isolated single umbilical artery in full-term neonates.

BACKGROUND: Neonates with a single umbilical artery (SUA) are considered at increased risk for chromosomal and structural abnormalities, and an increased adverse perinatal outcome. OBJECTIVE: The specific aims of our study were to evaluate (1) the association of asymptomatic infants with isolated SUA and perinatal outcomes and (2) whether asymptomatic neonates with isolated SUA at birth need full investigation. METHODS: The inclusion criteria for the study were full-term neonates with isolated SUA delivered from January 1996 to December 2006. For a control group, we used the next consecutive

Single umbilical artery aneurysm: a rare case report and review of perinatal management.

BACKGROUND: Single umbilical artery aneurysms (SUAA) are extremely rare vascular malformations. Most of the times aneurisms are located in the cors insertion on the placenta, and are associated with increased perinatal morbidity, including fetal growth restriction and increased fetal mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a case of a single SUAA diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound at 22 weeks and 1 day of gestation. The characteristic ultrasound findings included cystic dilatation at the placental end of the umbilical cord, accompanied by disrupted blood flow on color Doppler imagin

[Prenatal diagnosis of single umbilical artery: implications for chromosomal abnormalities and neonatal outcome].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the implications of a prenatal diagnosis of single umbilical artery (SUA) for chromosomal abnormalities and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: From January, 2008 to June, 2012, color Doppler ultrasound identified 44 fetuses with SUA. Prenatal diagnoses with amniocentesis or umbilical blood sampling were subsequently ordered for routine chromosome karyotyping and the newborns were followed up for assessing the neonatal outcomes. RESULTS: Of all the 44 fetuses, 24 had uncomplicated SUA, and 20 had other concurrent abnormalities (including 8 with abnormal ultrasound soft inde

[Single umbilical artery. Effect on fetal growth and doppler flow velocity wave form].

OBJECTIVE: Fetuses with single umbilical arteries (SUA) are often small for gestational age (SGA). We tried to clarify the following questions: 1. In which range of the normal reference chart for 2 umbilical arteries are the S/D-ratios of SUA located? 2. Is it possible to correctly predict the fetuses at risk for asphyxia or fetal death using these reference charts in SNA fetuses? 3. How do placental weight and histological findings in the fetoplacental vessel influence flow patterns in SUAs? 4. How does the vessel diameter of SUAs influence fetal growth? PATIENTS AND METHODS: 25 fetuses with

Risks of Renal Anomalies and Urinary Tract Infections in Neonates With Single Umbilical Artery.

Background Our study aims to evaluate the characteristics of congenital anomalies of kidneys and urinary tracts (CAKUT) and urinary tract infection (UTI) in babies with single umbilical artery (SUA) and to identify factors associated with these outcomes. Methods We performed a 15-year retrospective analysis on babies who were born ≥34 weeks with SUA between 2006 and 2020. Relevant clinical information on obstetrics and neonatal examinations, UTIs, and imaging of the urinary systems was evaluated. Results The frequency of SUA in newborns was 3.28 per 1,000 deliveries. The majority (271/291; 93.

Placental abnormalities associated with isolated single umbilical artery in small-for-gestational-age births.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that pregnancies complicated by placentas with an isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) are at increased risk for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births. The etiology of SGA in this population, however, remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate whether placental abnormalities in pregnancies with SGA births differ according to the presence of iSUA. STUDY DESIGN: This was an observational study of all women with pathologic examination of the placenta after delivering a non-anomalous, singleton SGA neonate between J

Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome in association with a single umbilical artery.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome is an inherited disorder most commonly characterized by prenatal or postnatal overgrowth, macroglossia, omphalocele, unusual earlobe creases, and increased risk of neoplasia. Several reported cases of this syndrome have been prenatally diagnosed, but no report has described the occurrence of this syndrome in association with a single umbilical artery. We report a case in which prenatal sonographic examination demonstrated fetal overgrowth, macroglossia, and omphalocele together with a single umbilical artery; our prenatal diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome was

Single umbilical artery and associated birth defects in perinatal autopsies: prenatal diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND: The umbilical cord forms the connection between the fetus and the placenta at the feto-maternal interface and normally comprises two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein. In some cases, only a single umbilical artery (SUA) is present. This study was conducted to evaluate associations between SUA and other congenital malformations discovered in perinatal autopsies and to ascertain the existence of preferential associations between SUA and certain anomalies. METHODS: We evaluated records of all fetuses sent for autopsy to the Department of Pathology during the 10-year period fr

A Case of Ring Chromosome 18 with Single Umbilical Artery Detected During Prenatal Period.

Fetuses with a single umbilical artery have a risk of increased chromosomal anomalies and congenital malformations. Ring chromosomes are rare and the phenotypic and clinical characteristics of affected individuals show great variability depending on the quantity of the lost critical genes or gains during the formation of the ring or due to mitotic instability. Ring chromosome 18 [r(18)] is characterized by short stature, craniofacial dysmorphism, mental and motor retardation, autoimmune disorders, extremity anomalies, dermal lesions, structural heart malformations, and kidney abnormalities. Single umbilical artery and associated malformations in over 5500 autopsies: relevance for perinatal management.

With a birth prevalence rate of about 1%, single umbilical artery (SUA) is the most frequent of all congenital anomalies. It is recognizably associated with a variety of birth defects, but disagreement exists as to whether a SUA can predict an adverse perinatal outcome; disagreement also exists related to if, when present, other birth defects should be ruled out. The aims of the study were to estimate the association between SUA and other birth defects in a series of perinatal autopsies, to establish if preferential associations between SUA and certain birth defects exist, and to quantify the

Single umbilical artery. A statistical analysis of 237 autopsy cases and review of the literature.

Two hundred thirty-seven autopsy cases of SUA and 1,242 unselected perinatal autopsies from military hospitals were reviewed and statistically analyzed. Results were correlated with those found in a comprehensive literature review. Incidence: The incidence of SUA in prospective deliveries is about 1%. Incidence is related to the portion of the umbilical cord examined, the method of cord examination (gross or microscopic), and to the race of the population base. The incidence of SUA in autopsy series is about twice the incidence in prospective series. SUA has a much higher incidence amont malfo

[Pathomorphological features of placentas with the single umbilical artery and a study of follow-ups of these babies].

The paper deals with the evaluation of pathomorphological and morphometrical changes in placenta with the single umbilical artery (SUA). The histological data on 52 placentas with SUA (group 1) were analyzed. A control group included 30 placentas from females with an uncomplicated obstetrical history. The significance of group differences was determined Student's test. In the placentas with SUA, their pathohistology shows a significantly marked isolated placental form of chronic placental insufficiency. In SUA, chorionic villous maturation and differentiation are impaired. Chorionic villous im
