Parental absence and suicidal ideation in depressed adolescents: Differential mediating roles of father-child vs. mother-child relationships and the moderating effect of sex.

BACKGROUND: Parental absence is a significant risk factor for adolescent suicidal ideation, yet the relational mechanisms and sex-specific vulnerabilities within clinical populations remain under-explored. This study investigated how different forms of parental absence relate to suicidal ideation through father-child and mother-child relationships, and whether these associations are moderated by adolescent sex. METHODS: A nationwide multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2020 to December 2023. We recruited 2467 clinically diagnosed depressed adolescents from 14 hospita

[Recourse to alcohol and self-medication in situations of family disruption--a model of sociologic analysis].

The aim of this study is to explore the different meanings of alcohol and over-the-counter drugs consumption under the stress related to family disruptions. In order to understand these consumptions, our analysis model considers at the same time the main gaps in the health conceptions and the kind of strategies developed by the single parent to cope with his family situation.

Single parent households and increased child asthma morbidity.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize whether single parent households are associated with pediatric asthma-related repeat healthcare utilization and to examine family-level psychosocial variables that may explain this relationship. METHODS: We analyzed a prospective cohort of 526 children aged 1-16 years hospitalized for asthma or bronchodilator-responsive wheezing whose caregivers self-reported their marital status. Those reporting being "single" were considered the at-risk category. The outcome was repeat asthma-related utilization (emergency room (ER) revisit or hospital readmission) within 12 mont

Evaluating clinically significant change in mother and child functioning: comparison of traditional and enhanced behavioral parent training.

The Strategies to Enhance Positive Parenting (STEPP) program, an enhanced behavioral parent training (BPT) intervention, was developed to improve engagement in and outcomes following treatment for single-mother families of school-age youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A previous randomized clinical trial of the STEPP program demonstrated that the intervention resulted in statistically significant improvements at the group-level in child oppositional behavior, various areas of child impairment, parental stress, and parenting behavior, relative to a wait-list control con

Strategies to support language development in neonatal intensive care unit: a narrative review.

Despite neonatal intensive care advancements and quality improvements, preterm infants often experience delays in speech and language development during early childhood. The etiological pathway of language delays is multifactorial, including younger gestational age at birth, male sex, pregnancy complications including gestational diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia, organic pathology from neonatal morbidities, environmental factors of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and prolonged hospitalization, home environment including socioeconomic status and parental education, and parent-infant i

The encounter with family violence and risky sexual activity among young adolescent females.

In this article, we analyze the relationship between family violence and risky sexual activity for female adolescents (age 14 to 17). We examine two forms of family violence: experience (receiving physical abuse from a parent or parent-figure) and exposure (witnessing interparental physical violence). We hypothesize that either form of violence will predict greater odds of engaging in risky sexual behavior. We define risky sexual activity as any of the following: having multiple partners within the last 12 months or having sex with partners who are themselves engaging in risky behavior (e.g.,

[Is the school entrance examination a door opener for health sciences research? : Analyzing study participation of hard-to-reach groups].

BACKGROUND: Additional scientific surveys within the compulsory school entrance examination (SEE) have become increasingly popular, partly because the SEE potentially reaches all socioeconomic groups. However, it has not been sufficiently explored whether selective participation in voluntary supplementary surveys actually results in no selection bias along socioeconomic characteristics. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the participation of potentially hard-to-reach families in a parent survey at the SEE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The parent survey on the utilization of community pr

Aspects of Area Deprivation Index in Relation to Hippocampal Volume Among Children.

IMPORTANCE: Area deprivation index (ADI) has been shown to be associated with reduced hippocampal volume (HV) among youths. The social environment may interact with the association between ADI and HV. OBJECTIVE: To investigate which aspects of ADI are uniquely associated with bilateral HV and whether school and family environments have moderating interactions in associations between ADI and HV. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Alcohol use by adolescents in disrupted families.

Alcohol use increases among adults in response to marital disruption and divorce, but data that are available regarding adolescent alcohol use are inconsistent in the light of whether or not families are intact. To explore this question we obtained measures of frequency and quantity of alcohol use from 2595 junior and senior high school students, together with information about family intactness and parental alcohol use. Adolescents in single and stepparent families reported more alcohol use than adolescents from intact families, for both frequency and quantity of use. This was the case for bo

Guidelines for the family therapeutic approach to eating disorders.

After a brief historical overview of the literature on family therapy in eating disorders, the authors' own clinical experience is summarized in some practical guidelines: give the family therapist a central position within the team, engage the family and/or spouse as co-therapist, explore the message of the eating disorder on different levels, neutralize the symptoms outside of the family interaction, promote direct communication, facilitate the separation-individuation process, and be available for a long time. Finally some special issues are discussed: sexual and/or physical abuse in the fa

Family psychological factors in relation to children's asthma status and behavioral adjustment at age 4.

The objectives of this study were to determine whether family psychosocial factors influenced asthma development by age 4, and whether family factors and early wheezing illness were associated with behavioral adjustment at age 4. Participants were 98 children enrolled in an intervention study at 9-24 months and followed to age 4. Baseline evaluations assessed infants' respiratory illness severity, family psychosocial characteristics, and parental risk factors for asthma development. Active asthma categorization at age 4 utilized both parent report and objective data. Parents completed the Chil

Running on empty: families, time, and workplace injuries.

Over the past 5 decades, more women have entered the labor force, and more households have been headed by single parents. Both trends have substantially reduced parents' free time, creating added strain in the event of family health problems, including work-related injuries and illnesses. This commentary presents evidence about the impact of occupational injuries on today's families. In addition to losing considerable income, injured parents are less able to do household work, and other family members are often called on to care for them. Family members cut back on their paid, school, and hous

Correlates of parental differential treatment: parental and contextual factors during middle childhood.

The current study examined whether parental and contextual risk factors contribute to mothers' and fathers' differential treatment (MDT/FDT) when accounting for sibling dyad characteristics. Also explored was whether family type (single mothers vs. 2 parents) moderated the links between the parental and contextual correlates and MDT. One hundred and seventy-two families with older (M= 7.4 years) and younger (M= 5.2 years) siblings were studied. Parents and children reported about the parent-child relationship, and parents reported about the children's characteristics, their own psychological r

The impact of a child with sickle cell disease on family dynamics.

This paper has reviewed research and other papers that have furthered our understanding of the impact of the presence of a child with sickle cell disease on the family. The research suggests that the primary parent in such a family experiences additional emotional strain much like primary parents of children with other chronic illnesses have been found to exhibit. The research also suggests that the ill child's presence influences interpersonal relationships within the family. Specifically, there is some evidence that the relationship between the parents and the relationship between the parent

Child psychological maltreatment in Palestinian families.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to identify predictors of child psychological maltreatment (CPM) in Palestinian families. It examined the relative contributions of child characteristics, parents' sociodemographics, and economic hardship, in addition to family's characteristics such as family values, family ambiance, gender inequities, parental support, harsh discipline, and other forms of maltreatment, to psychological maltreatment. METHOD: The sample consisted of 1000 school age children who ranged in age from 12 to 16 years. Two school counselors carried the interviews with children at

A not-so-grim tale: how childhood family structure influences reproductive and risk-taking outcomes in a historical U.S. Population.

Childhood family structure has been shown to play an important role in shaping a child's life course development, especially in industrialised societies. One hypothesis which could explain such findings is that parental investment is likely to be diluted in families without both natural parents. Most empirical studies have examined the influence of only one type of family disruption or composition (e.g. father absence) making it difficult to simultaneously compare the effects of different kinds of family structure on children's future outcomes. Here we use a large, rich data source (n=16,207)
