Evaluation of the CytoRich technique for cervical smears.

The aim of the study was to assess the ability of the CytoRich System to prepare optimal gynaecological smears for diagnosis. The diagnostic results obtained from evaluating 1,325 matched slide-pairs, prepared using conventional methods and thin-layer technology, were compared. Cytological material for study was obtained using the combined spatula-cytobrush sampling technique. An assessment of the pitfalls associated with the interpretation of these smears was also undertaken. Diagnostic agreement was achieved in 1,272 of the 1,325 matched slide-pairs (96.0%), and these included 1,172 negative

Effect of root conditioning agents on teeth periodontal using Scanning electron microscopy.

Mechanical instrumentation of root surfaces results in the formation of a smear layer that may impede the reattachment of connective tissue. Root conditioning agents are employed to remove the smear layer, expose collagen fibres and facilitate improved tissue regeneration. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the efficacy of five root conditioning agents-20% citric acid, 17% EDTA, 37% phosphoric acid, 250 mg/mL tetracycline hydrochloride and 0.8% hyaluronic acid-using scanning electron microscopy. Tetracycline hydrochloride showed the greatest efficacy, exhibiting a significantly higher numb

Detection of multinucleated giant cells in differentiated keratinocytes with herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus infections by modified Tzanck smear method.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections induce the formation of intraepidermal vesicles containing acantholytic cells and multinucleated giant cells in the skin. The Tzanck smear is most commonly used to diagnose cutaneous herpetic infections, but it leads to many false-positive and -negative results. This study aimed at establishing a method detecting much larger multinucleated giant cells using the Tzanck smear because these cells characterize the viral cytopathic effect in skin infections. Morphological changes were analyzed among several layers of keratinocyt

Enhancing Root Canal Disinfection with Er:YAG Laser: A Systematic Review.

Background: The quest for minimally invasive disinfection in endodontics has led to using Erbium:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (Er:YAG) lasers. Conventional approaches may leave bacterial reservoirs in complex canal anatomies. Er:YAG's strong water absorption generates photoacoustic streaming, improving smear layer removal with lower thermal risk than other laser systems. Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Database searches (PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library) identified studies (2015-2025) on Er:YAG laser-assisted root canal disinfection. Fifteen articles

Comparitive effects of tetracyclines and citric acid on dentin root surface of periodontally involved human teeth: A scanning electron microscope study.

Periodontal diseases produce physical and chemical alterations in the root cementum. Various topical applications as root conditioning agents have been recommended as an adjunct to mechanical root surface debridement to remove smear layer, endotoxins and to expose collagen fibers on dentin surface. The objectives were to compare dentin surface changes following applications of tetracyclines and citric acid to the instrumented root surface of periodontally involved human teeth under scanning electron microscope. The study group comprised of 80 dentin samples, which were prepared from periodontal

[New version of the pathology practice guideline for cervical cytology: sharpened criteria for adequacy; expanded use of new techniques].

The Dutch Pathology Association (NVVP) has modified the practice guideline for cervical cytology. The changes were made in consultation with the Dutch College ofGeneral Practitioners (NHG) and the Dutch Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NVOG). The four most important changes are: (a) breastfeeding is no longer a contraindication for smear taking; (b) the rejection of smears, under certain conditions, if the cervix has not been visualised; the representativeness of a smear depends in part on the degree to which the requesting physician has verified that the smear was taken from the cervix

An in vitro assessment of the dentine lost during instrumentation using the Periosonic system.

This study investigated the ability of a new instrument designed for root debridement, the Periosonic, to remove dentine compared to a hand curette and an ultrasonic scaler. The Periosonic system is a modification of the Micro-Megax endodontic system and uses modified files to remove plaque, calculus and tooth substance. The Periosonic has 2 file types; the Periosonic 1 is a more aggressive file for the removal of gross supra- and subgingival deposits, while the Periosonic 2 is a thinner more flexible file used for the removal of subgingival deposits. 40 human dentine specimens were ground fla

A comparison of the effects of three chelating agents on the root canals of extracted human teeth.

The effects of EDTA were compared in vitro with the effects of two other chelating agents: succimer and trientine HCl. Thirty extracted human teeth with single canals were used. Groups of 10 were treated by the three agents and then examined under the scanning electron microscope. The results showed that EDTA widened the dentinal tubules. Trientine HCl also produced widening of the dentinal tubules very similar to EDTA, whereas succimer produced more extensive widening.

In vitro permeability of furcation dentin in permanent teeth.

Extracted unerupted permanent third molars with the occlusal half of the crown and apical half of the roots removed were cemented to Plexiglas blocks. Using a positive pressure system in which the movement of fluid across the dental tubules could be measured, the permeability of furcation dentin was measured before and after alteration of the furcation thickness. Subsequently, measurements of reduction in thickness of cementum and dentin were performed. Furcation dentin permeability was found to increase as the cementum and dentin thickness was reduced and the smear layer removed. The permeabi

The role of toothpaste in the aetiology and treatment of dentine hypersensitivity.

Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common, painful dental condition with a multi-factorial aetiology. The hydrodynamic mechanism theory to explain dentine sensitivity also appears to fit DH: lesions exhibiting large numbers of open dentinal tubules at the surface and patent to the pulp. By definition, DH can only occur when dentine becomes exposed (lesion localisation) and tubules opened (lesion initiation), thus permitting increased fluid flow in tubules on stimulation. Erosion, particularly from dietary acids appears to play a dominant role in both processes. Toothbrushing with most toothpas

Laser polarization autofluorescence of endogenous porphyrins of optically anisotropic biological tissues and fluids in diagnostics of necrotic and pathological changes of human organs.

This research presents the results of investigation of laser polarization fluorescence of biological layers (histological sections, cytological smears). The polarization structural properties of autofluorescent images of human biological tissues layers and fluids were found and investigated. A model describing the formation of polarizationally heterogeneous images of optically anisotropic biological layers is suggested. On this basis, the practical method of polarization-variable autofluorescence is analytically substantiated and experimentally tested. The efficiency of applying this method to
