Comprehensive comparison of social cognitive performance in autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) are separate neurodevelopmental disorders that are both characterized by difficulties in social cognition and social functioning. Due to methodological confounds, the degree of similarity in social cognitive impairments across these two disorders is currently unknown. This study therefore conducted a comprehensive comparison of social cognitive ability in ASD and SCZ to aid efforts to develop optimized treatment programs. METHODS: In total, 101 individuals with ASD, 92 individuals with SCZ or schizoaffective disorder, and 101

Comparison of two rodent models of maternal separation on juvenile social behavior.

Early childhood deprivation is associated with an increased risk of attachment disorders and psychopathology. The neural consequences of exposure to stress early in life have used two major rodent models to provide important tools for translational research. Although both models have been termed maternal separation (MS), the paradigms differ in ways that clearly shift the focus of stress between maternal and offspring units. The first model, here called early deprivation (ED), isolates pups individually while the dam is left not alone, but with a subset of littermates in the home nest ("stay-a

Virtual social support buffers stress response: An experimental comparison of real-life and virtual support prior to a social stressor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Face-to-face and text-based social support have been shown to attenuate stress responses in past studies. Yet as social interactions increasingly take place online by means of virtual humans, our objective was to examine whether different forms of social support (virtual vs. real) prior to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) would also decrease stress. Additionally, the effect on subsequent real-life social behaviors (helping and approach) was evaluated while controlling for affective states and social presence. METHODS: 56 participants were either supported by an a

Cluster A personality pathology in social anxiety disorder: a comparison with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been associated with cluster A personality disorder (PD) traits, mainly paranoid and schizoid traits. AIM: The aim of the study was to further investigate cluster A personality pathology in patients with SAD. METHODS: Self-reported PD traits were investigated in a clinical sample of 161 participants with SAD and in a clinical comparison group of 145 participants with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PAD). RESULTS: A diagnosis of SAD was associated with more paranoid and schizotypal PD traits, and an association between depression and

Longitudinal effects of social media feedback on psychological distress in young adults: the mediating roles of self-esteem and social comparison.

BACKGROUND: Social media feedback, particularly likes and comments, has become an important source of social validation for young adults. However, the longitudinal effects of such feedback on psychological distress and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: This study employed a three-wave longitudinal design over eight months to examine the effects of social media likes and comments feedback on depressive and anxiety symptoms among 398 Chinese young adults (mean age = 21.34 years, 58.3% female). Cross-lagged panel models were used to test bidirectional relationships

Changes and persistence in heart rate variability before and during social stress: A comparison of individuals with and without social anxiety disorder.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) experience significant and persistent fear of social situations as they anticipate rejection, scrutiny, and embarrassment. Given that physiological reactions to social situations may shape emotional experience in SAD, understanding psychophysiological changes operating in SAD may be important to address this potentially key perpetuating factor. This study compared the patterns of change (via contrasts of estimated marginal means) and persistence (via autoregressive models) of two indices of heart rate variability (HRV; Root Mean Square of Successi

Comparison of Transdiagnostic Treatment and Specialized Social Anxiety Treatment for Children and Adolescents With Social Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric social anxiety disorder consistently shows the poorest treatment response of all anxiety disorders. The current study compared a generic cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment for pediatric anxiety against a modified (social anxiety) treatment that incorporated specific components to target theoretically important maintaining processes. METHOD: A total of 200 children and adolescents (mean age = 9.5 years, SD = 2.2 years; 47% boys) diagnosed with social anxiety disorder as either their principal or additional disorder were randomly allocated to either the generic or

A comparison of neural correlates underlying social cognition in Klinefelter syndrome and autism.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a genetic syndrome characterized by the presence of an extra X chromosome that appears to increase the risk of psychopathology, such as autism symptoms. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to determine underlying mechanisms related to this risk, with the aim of gaining insight into neural mechanisms behind social-cognitive dysfunction in KS and autism, and understanding similarities and differences in social information processing deficits. Fourteen boys with KS, seventeen boys with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and nineteen non-clinical male co

Social comparison processes and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome.

The present study investigated the relationship between social comparison processes and depressive symptoms in 36 participants (34 males and two females) aged 10 to 16 years with Asperger syndrome. Participants completed the Social Comparison Scale and the Children's Depression Inventory. Depressive symptoms were significantly correlated with the SCS (r = 0.52, p = 0.001), specifically perceived group membership (r = 0.56, p < 0.001). A regression analysis revealed that perceived group membership significantly and independently predicted depression scores (beta= 0.56, p = 0.002). It is suggest

Moderating variables in the relationship between social comparison and depression: an evolutionary perspective.

This study investigated the relationship between social comparison and depression utilizing an evolutionary framework. It investigated the moderating effects on social comparison of the importance of comparison dimensions to the person, and of the perceived importance of the dimensions to other people. An adaptation of a measure of self-esteem (Self Attributes Questionnaire; Pelham & Swann, 1989) was utilized. This consisted of 10-point Likert scale ratings on 10 individual social comparison dimensions (e.g. intelligence, social skills, sense of humour). Questions were added to explore beliefs

Comparisons are Odious? The neural basis of in-group and out-group social comparison among game players: An fMRI study.

Social comparison is an important way for individuals to define their social characteristics. Online games with a large amount of social information provide a convenient platform for social comparison between players. However, few studies have examined the neural basis of different social comparisons in game players. This study aims to explore the activation of brain regions triggered by social comparison in different contexts and the possible moderating effect of group identity. A total of 26 subjects participated in our experiment. We referred to the minimum group paradigm to evoke group ide

Comparing comparisons: A transdiagnostic investigation of social and temporal comparisons and their differential effects on mental health outcomes and well-being.

BACKGROUND: While the association of social comparisons and mental health has been frequently researched, the role of temporal comparisons (evaluating oneself over time) and their distinct associations with mental health outcomes are understudied. Here, we aimed to elucidate the distinct associations of social and temporal comparisons with a range of mental health outcomes, as well as previously identified predictors of these outcomes. We specifically examined the differential relationships of comparison frequency, discrepancy, and affective impact with depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stres

The Maintaining Factors of Social Anxiety: A Three-Group Comparison of a Clinical Sample with Highly Socially Anxious Students and Non-Anxious Students.

BACKGROUND: Clark and Wells' (1995) cognitive model of social anxiety (CWM) explains the maintenance of social anxiety and has been used as a guide for treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Few studies have examined the components of the model together across different samples. AIMS: This study had two distinct aims: to test the components of CWM and to examine how the variables of CWM may differ between clinical and non-clinical samples with varying levels of social anxiety. METHOD: Hypothesized relationships between three groups (i.e. a clinical sample of individuals diagnosed with S

Does cultural context matter? Comparison of Finnish and Italian children's social-pragmatic comprehension.

INTRODUCTION: While social-pragmatic comprehension has been studied from a number of perspectives, there are only a few studies that focus on cultural factors and their effect on the development of pragmatic processing skills. Previous studies have suggested that various communicative features and different communicative styles may be detected in individuals coming from different contextual backgrounds, even within Europe itself. METHODS: In this light, the present study compared the performance of 150 Finnish and 150 Italian children matched for age and gender (age range 4-8 years) on the Pr

Canine parasitoses in north Patagonia (Argentina): comparison between different social and environmental factors.

In many countries, urban areas are commonly contaminated with canine feces that spread parasites, a situation related to the natural and social environment. Dogs having free access to public areas therefore constitutes a health risk. Because in Patagonia there are no records of city comparisons that consider the number of free-roaming dogs and the local environmental and socioeconomic characteristics, in this study we analyse and compare canine parasitoses in two cities of Rio Negro province, Argentina. Canine feces were collected from public areas of El Bolsón and Cipolletti cities and examin

Profiles of Adolescent Social Media Use Intensity and Subjective Well-Being: The Sequential Mediating Roles of Upward Social Comparison and Body Appreciation.

The relationship between social media use and adolescent well-being remains complex, and the psychological processes involved in this association require further investigation. Using data from 2085 Chinese adolescents aged 10-19 years, this study identified three social media use intensity profiles through latent profile analysis and examined whether upward social comparison and body appreciation formed a sequential mediating pathway linking social media use intensity and subjective well-being. Three profiles were identified: low social media use intensity (25.2%), moderate social media use in
