Measuring social norms related to violent child discipline in Uganda: Mixed-methods scale development and validation.

BACKGROUND: Norms-shifting interventions show promise in addressing violence against children (VAC), yet few culturally grounded quantitative measures of VAC-related norms exist, limiting norms change research and intervention evaluation. We aimed to document violent child discipline behaviors and norms in Uganda and develop psychometrically validated descriptive and injunctive norms measures. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods design, we interviewed young fathers and community members (n = 1044) in six regions of Uganda to identify VAC-related norms and inform survey item development. Items were

Same flavours, different taste buds: a theory for predicting social norms for specific behaviours across cultures.

Behavioural norms vary across cultures, and they vary in distinct ways for different behaviours. We show that this variation is not random but highly predictable. We introduce the Moral Flavours Model, a theory proposing that norms emerge from three factors: how much moral concern a behaviour evokes overall, its 'moral flavour' (the type of concern it evokes), and societies' 'moral tastes' (their sensitivity to different types of concern). We demonstrate that this simple framework predicts 76% of the variance in moral norms across 19 morally contentious behaviours in 42 societies, and 88% of t

The influence of social norms on safety practices among warehouse employees: Workplace behavior as a moderator.

INTRODUCTION AND METHOD: Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, data were collected from 340 survey respondents and 35 interviewees across logistics facilities. Quantitative analysis using moderated multiple regression revealed that social norms (β = 0.19, p = 0.002) and workplace behavior (β = 0.48, p < 0.001) significantly predict safety practices. However, workplace behavior did not moderate this relationship (p = 0.329). RESULTS: Qualitative findings elucidated this null effect, highlighting dominant operational logics where productivity pressures and conformity overrid

Planned versus Unplanned Daily Substance Use among Sexual Minority Youth: The Moderating Role of Social Norms.

This post-registered study examined the daily associations between planned (versus unplanned) nicotine, cannabis, and alcohol use, and the moderating role of social normative factors (i.e., descriptive and injunctive norms, nicotine product exposure on social media) on these associations among sexual minority youth (SMY). Participants (N = 82) completed a baseline assessment then a 30-day ecological momentary assessment monitoring period. Plans to use substances early in the day were associated with greater later same-day substance use. Sexual minority friend descriptive norms were associated

Brief motivational intervention for college drinking: the synergistic impact of social anxiety and perceived drinking norms.

Despite the efficacy of Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), students with higher social anxiety appear vulnerable to poorer outcomes. A possible explanation for these outcomes is that corrective normative feedback (an active component of BASICS) may be less effective for socially anxious students if their beliefs about others' drinking are less malleable because of intense fear of negative evaluation for deviating from perceived drinking norms. This study evaluated whether socially anxious students demonstrated less change in perceived norms during BASICS. W

Influence of community social norms on spousal violence: a population-based multilevel study of Nigerian women.

OBJECTIVES: We examined whether social norms toward spousal violence in Nigeria, at the state level, are associated with a woman's exposure to physical and sexual violence perpetrated by her husband. METHODS: Using data from the 2008 Demographic and Health Survey, we fit four 3-level random intercepts models to examine contextual factors associated with spousal violence while accounting for individual-level predictors. RESULTS: Of the 18,798 ever-married Nigerian women in our sample, 18.7% reported exposure to spousal sexual or physical violence. The prevalence was geographically patterned b

Perceived social norms, expectations, and attitudes toward corporal punishment among an urban community sample of parents.

Despite the fact that corporal punishment (CP) is a significant risk factor for increased aggression in children, child physical abuse victimization, and other poor outcomes, approval of CP remains high in the United States. Having a positive attitude toward CP use is a strong and malleable predictor of CP use and, therefore, is an important potential target for reducing use of CP. The Theory of Planned Behavior suggests that parents' perceived injunctive and descriptive social norms and expectations regarding CP use might be linked with CP attitudes and behavior. Exploring obscenity in Nigerian Afro-pop music: A sociocultural analysis of Yoruba youth and social norms.

Nigerian Afro-pop music is a popular genre that significantly influences Nigerian society and beyond. While Afro-pop promotes Nigerian culture globally, critics argue that its explicit lyrics and provocative music videos negatively impact young individuals, promoting materialism, sexual promiscuity, and drug use. This research focuses on the cultural implications of "vulgar" Afro-pop music among Yoruba youth in Nigeria. The study employs a quantitative analysis of 295 responses to explore the respondents' perspectives on offensive content in Nigerian Afro-pop music. The findings highlight musi

Integrating social identity theory and family systems theory to explain how sociocultural norms become family life.

A persistent challenge in cultural family psychology is explaining how publicly circulating expectations about respectability, marriage, achievement, and filial duty become rules, resource conditions, and emotional climates within particular households. This theoretical and methodological article develops a bounded integration of Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Bowen's Family Systems Theory (FST). The model specifies four linked propositions: sociocultural norms acquire identity and reputational significance; family members with unequal authority and resources translate those stakes into dome

Changes in social norms during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic across 43 countries.

The emergence of COVID-19 dramatically changed social behavior across societies and contexts. Here we study whether social norms also changed. Specifically, we study this question for cultural tightness (the degree to which societies generally have strong norms), specific social norms (e.g. stealing, hand washing), and norms about enforcement, using survey data from 30,431 respondents in 43 countries recorded before and in the early stages following the emergence of COVID-19. Using variation in disease intensity, we shed light on the mechanisms predicting changes in social norm measures. We fi

Intrahousehold food allocation social norms and food taboos in rural Ethiopia: The case of adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: In low-income countries, social norms play a significant role in intrahousehold food allocation practices. These norms can sometimes lead to discrimination against specific groups, posing a public health concern. This study focuses on the social norm surrounding food allocation within households and food taboos affecting adolescent girls in rural Ethiopia. METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted using vignettes as prompts for 20 focus group discussions and 32 in-depth interviews. The vignettes were tailored to the local context. Participants were chosen purposefully, and data we

Influence of cultural values and hierarchical social norms on buying counterfeits online: a 17-country study.

INTRODUCTION: As a globally prevalent phenomenon, buying counterfeit products harms consumers, economies, societies, governments, and the environment. The study examined the hierarchy of injunctive normative influence (personal vs. societal) on counterfeit purchase intentions and trends in non-deceptive (known) counterfeit purchase behavior. The current research expands the hierarchical norms approach by examining how the cultural values of power distance and individualism-collectivism predict injunctive normative perceptions and counterfeit buying intention and behavior. METHODS: A cross-sec

How social norms contribute to physical violence among ever-partnered women in Uganda: A qualitative study.

This paper contributes to the literature that studies how social norms sustain undesirable behavior. It establishes how norms contribute to intimate partner physical violence against women. First, norms organize physical violence as a domestic and private matter. Second, they organize physical violence as a constituent part of women's lives, thereby normalizing women's experience of abuse. Third, norms define appropriate boundaries within which male partners perpetrate violence. The findings draw essential information for social change interventions that target improvement in women's and girls

Mini - social phobia inventory (mini-SPIN): psychometric properties and population based norms of the German version.

BACKGROUND: A short screening for social anxiety disorder is useful in clinical and epidemiological contexts. However, the German version of the short form of the Social Phobia Inventory (mini-SPIN) has not been evaluated yet. Therefore, our aim was to determine reliability, validity and population based norms of the German mini-SPIN. METHODS: The mini-SPIN was evaluated in a clinical (N = 1254) and in a representative community sample (N = 1274). Clinical diagnoses, the Patient Health Questionnaire depression (PHQ-9) and somatization modules (PHQ-15), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (

Peer Influence on IPV by Young Adult Males: Investigating the Case for a Social Norms Approach.

Nearly 32% of women report experiencing physical violence from an intimate partner and more than 8% report being raped by a significant other in their lifetime. Young people's perceptions that their peers perpetrate relationship violence have been shown to increase the odds of self-reported perpetration. Yet, limited research has been conducted on this relationship as individuals begin to age out of adolescence. The present study sought to examine the link between the perception of peer perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) and self-reported IPV perpetration among a sample of predomi

The Connection Between Personality and the Perception of Social Norms in the Adaptation to the Principles of Sustainable Development.

The purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between personality traits of student youth and the perception of social norms regulating adaptation to sustainable development principles. An empirical survey was conducted among 150 third- and fourth-year students of social and humanities specialities at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. The results showed that conscientiousness (M = 4.05; SD = 0.58), openness to experience (M = 3.95; SD = 0.63), and agreeableness (M = 3.87; SD = 0.65) were most strongly associated with the perception of sustainable development norms. A multidimensional normative framework for fine-grained social cognition assessment with the BCS-Greco.

OBJECTIVE: Current social cognition assessments often yield global summary scores that obscure clinically meaningful variability across subcomponents. This study proposes a multilevel interpretive framework for the Social Cognition Battery (Batterie de Cognition Sociale, BCS-Greco) that enables fine-grained analysis of facial emotion recognition, mental state inference, and theory of mind reasoning. METHOD: Analyses were based on partially overlapping normative samples of healthy French-speaking adults (age range: 20-69 years) who completed facial emotion recognition (FER/IDEMO; n = 155), Rea

Tinkering with reflection and normativity: An action-based model for the emergence of complex social systems.

The social tinkering account explains cultural complexity without design. The account does not address ontological issues and seems to take social normativity for granted. In turn, the mechanisms they suggest remain incomplete in explaining the emergent and normative nature of sociality. The current commentary proposes complementary explanations from an action-based approach to address these gaps.

Area-Level Normative Social Context and Intimate Partner Physical Violence in Mozambique.

Violence against women is considered a serious public health problem. It is estimated that about 30% of women who have been in a relationship in the world have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence from their intimate partners. In sub-Saharan Africa, one of the regions in the world with the highest prevalence of intimate partner violence, there have been studies of factors associated with intimate partner violence. However, few studies have explicitly examined the influence of the normative social context on women's accepting attitudes toward spousal abuse and their risk of expe

Social norm processing in adult social phobia: atypically increased ventromedial frontal cortex responsiveness to unintentional (embarrassing) transgressions.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the neural underpinnings of generalized social phobia, which is defined by a persistent heightened fear of social disapproval. Using event-related functional MRI (fMRI), the authors examined whether the intent of an event, which mediates the neural response to social disapproval in healthy individuals, differentially affects response in generalized social phobia. METHOD: Sixteen patients with generalized social phobia and 16 healthy comparison subjects group-matched on age, gender, and IQ underwent fMRI scans while reading stories that involved neutral social
