Gas production after reaction of sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric acid.

Ingestion of sodium bicarbonate has been implicated as one of the proximate causes of spontaneous gastric rupture. However, the volume and rate of gas released from the reaction of ingested sodium bicarbonate and gastric acid has not been previously studied in detail. We, therefore, developed an in vitro method for measuring gas release after addition of sodium bicarbonate to a solution containing hydrochloric acid. From the results of our studies, we conclude that even though hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate react instantaneously, the resulting gas production is slow, mainly because C

Increased Alcohol Consumption in Mice Lacking Sodium Bicarbonate Transporter NBCn1.

The previous reports on an addiction vulnerability marker in the human SLC4A7 gene encoding the Na/HCO3 transporter NBCn1 suggest that this pH-regulating protein may affect alcohol-related behavior and response. Here, we examined alcohol consumption and sensitivity to the sedative effects of alcohol in male NBCn1 knockout mice. These mice displayed lower pH in neurons than wildtype controls, determined by intracellular pH in hippocampal neuronal cultures. Neurons from knockout mice had a higher action potential threshold and a more depolarized membrane potential, thus reducing membrane excitab

Empirical modeling of metabolic alkalosis induced by sodium bicarbonate ingestion.

Biphasic responses of blood HCO3- concentration and H+ concentration following ingestion of 3 doses of NaHCO3 (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 g·kg-1) were assessed in 8 men. For HCO3- concentration, there were significant effects of dose on maximum responses and timing, as well amplitudes, onsets, and/or time constants of phases 1 and 2. Fewer significant effects of dose were observed for H+ concentration and additional data demonstrated differential effects of dose on HCO3- concentration and H+ concentration responses and underlying phases.

Physostigmine, sodium bicarbonate, or hypertonic saline to treat diphenhydramine toxicity.

Diphenhydramine (DPH) is a commonly reported overdose that shares similar toxicities with other agents. such as tricyclic antidepressants, that interact with the fast sodium channels. Although physostigmine is considered an acceptable antidote for severe DPH toxicity, adverse effects such as seizures and cholinergic crisis may occur. We hypothesized that hypertonic saline or bicarbonate is equivalent or are better antidotes in an animal model of DPH toxicity. In a preliminary study. Sprague-Dawley rats were given toxic doses of DPH while continuous ECG, EEG, and blood pressure monitoring was p

Effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on exhaustive resistance exercise performance.

Six weight trained males were studied prior to, during, and in recovery from exhaustive resistance exercise, 105 min after ingesting 300 mg.kg-1 of either a placebo or NaHCO3. The exercise test consisted of four sets of 12 repetitions with a fifth set to volitional fatigue on a Universal leg press machine at a resistance equaling approximately 70% of the subjects 1-repetition maximum. Arterialized venous blood was analyzed for lactate concentration, blood gas, and acid-base parameters. The ingestion of NaHCO3 produced a significant increase in resting pH (7.39 to 7.46), HCO3- (22.9 to 28.3 mEq

Prevalence, implementation, and barriers of sodium bicarbonate supplementation in team sports.

Sodium bicarbonate (SB) ingestion has empirical evidence supporting its efficacy for improving team sport performance. It is currently unclear, however, if SB is incorporated into nutritional regimes by practitioners. This study aimed to investigate existing prevalence, implementation, and barriers of SB supplementation in team sports. A cross-sectional, observational design was employed. In total, 66 practitioners (professional experience: 7 ± 5 years) based in UK or USA responded to an online survey. Most practitioners (n = 60; 91%) were aware of SB being used as an ergogenic aid, which was

Development and Characterization of Sodium Bicarbonate-Based Gel for Cytolytic Vaginosis.

Background/Objectives: Cytolytic vaginosis or, classically, Doderlein's cytolysis is characterized by significant growth of species of the Lactobacillus genus, which leads to high amounts of lactic acid in the vaginal environment. Lactobacillus crispatus has been proposed as a key pathogen in this clinical condition. The symptomatology of cytolytic vaginosis is commonly confused with that of vulvovaginal candidosis, leading to inadequate and ineffective azole therapies. Nevertheless, historically, the use of sodium bicarbonate intimate baths was an effective way to reduce the symptoms of cytol

Safety and Efficacy of Sodium Bicarbonate versus Hyaluronidase in Peribulbar Anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND: 400 cases undergoing surgery for cataract under local anaesthesia were studied. Peribulbar anaesthesia involves injecting a mixture of 2% lignocaine, bupivicaine 0.5% and hyaluronidase into the peripheral space of the orbit through a single infero-lateral point. Sodium bicarbonate has been shown to reduce the time of onset of anaesthesia and pain perception when mixed with local anaesthetics. METHODS: This study compared two groups of patients (200 each), one receiving hyaluronidase mixed anaesthetic and the other sodium bicarbonate buffered anaesthetic. The groups were compared f

S0859, an N-cyanosulphonamide inhibitor of sodium-bicarbonate cotransport in the heart.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracellular pH (pH(i)) in heart is regulated by sarcolemmal H(+)-equivalent transporters such as Na(+)-H(+) exchange (NHE) and Na(+)-HCO(3) (-) cotransport (NBC). Inhibition of NBC influences pH(i) and can be cardioprotective in animal models of post-ischaemic reperfusion. Apart from a rabbit polyclonal NBC-antibody, a selective NBC inhibitor compound has not been studied. Compound S0859 (C(29)H(24)ClN(3)O(3)S) is a putative NBC inhibitor. Here, we provide the drug's chemical structure, test its potency and selectivity in ventricular cells and assess its suitability f

Effect of sodium bicarbonate administration on metabolic responses to maximal exercise.

Administration of bicarbonate has been shown to cause metabolic alkalosis both in man and in horses and is, therefore, thought to increase the buffering capacity of the body and thereby delay the onset of fatigue. However, results regarding the influence of sodium bicarbonate loading on performance both in human athletes and in horses are conflicting. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate the metabolic response to a standardised treadmill exercise test to fatigue, in horses given bicarbonate (0.6 g/kg bwt), in comparison to horses given placebo (water). Five Standardbred trotter

An investigation of the pathological and physiological effects of intraosseous sodium bicarbonate in pigs.

Recent interest in the intraosseous (IO) route as an alternative venous access for drug and fluid administration has increased. This study examined the physiological and skeletal pathological effects of IO NaHCO3 in pigs. In the pathological studies, swine (8-10 kg) received NaHCO3 (1 mEq/kg) in one tibia and saline (1 ml/kg) in the other tibia via an 18-gauge spinal needle inserted into the anteromedial surface of the bone. The animals were then observed for one month, sacrificed, and the tibias were isolated, sectioned, and stained for pathological examinations. The physiological effects of

Sodium Bicarbonate for Critically Ill Adults with Metabolic Acidosis and Shock.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic acidosis is common in critically ill patients and is associated with organ dysfunction and death. Sodium bicarbonate is used to correct acidemia, but its benefit in patients with metabolic acidosis who are receiving vasopressors remains uncertain. METHODS: In this pragmatic, adaptive, double-blind, randomized trial, we assigned adults with metabolic acidosis (pH, <7.30; base excess, no more than -4 mmol per liter; and partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide, ≤45 mm Hg without intubation or ≤50 mm Hg with intubation) who were receiving vasopressors in the intensive ca

Oral sodium bicarbonate in people on haemodialysis: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adverse events and mortality tend to cluster around dialysis sessions, potentially due to the impact of the saw-toothed profile of uraemic toxins such as potassium, peaking pre-dialysis and rapidly dropping during dialysis. Acidosis could be contributing to this harm by exacerbating a rise in potassium. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of oral bicarbonate treatment on reducing inter-dialytic potassium gain as well as other clinical consequences of preserving muscle mass and function and reducing intradialytic arrhythmia risk in people on haemodialysis.

Safety, Tolerability, and Effects of Sodium Bicarbonate Inhalation in Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Among the many consequences of loss of CFTR protein function, a significant reduction of the secretion of bicarbonate (HCO3-) in cystic fibrosis (CF) is a major pathogenic feature. Loss of HCO3- leads to abnormally low pH and impaired mucus clearance in airways and other exocrine organs, which suggests that NaHCO3 inhalation may be a low-cost, easily accessible therapy for CF. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety, tolerability, and effects of inhaled aerosols of NaHCO3 solutions (4.2% and 8.4%). METHODS: An experimental, prospective, open-label, pilot, clinical study was conducted w
