Detection of the Third Heart Sound Based on Nonlinear Signal Decomposition and Time-Frequency Localization.

This study presents a precise way to detect the third ( S3 ) heart sound, which is recognized as an important indication of heart failure, based on nonlinear single decomposition and time-frequency localization. The detection of the S3 is obscured due to its significantly low energy and frequency. Even more, the detected S3 may be misunderstood as an abnormal second heart sound with a fixed split, which was not addressed in the literature. To detect such S3, the Hilbert vibration decomposition method is applied to decompose the heart sound into a certain number of subcomponents while intactly

Sound localization in callosal agenesis and early callosotomy subjects: brain reorganization and/or compensatory strategies.

In order to evaluate the callosal involvement in sound localization, the present study examined the response accuracy of acallosal and early callosotomized subjects to monaural and binaural auditory targets presented in three-dimensional space. In these subjects, bilateral localization cues, such as interaural time and level differences, are integrated at the cortical and subcortical levels without the additional support of the callosal commissure. Because acallosal and early-callosotomized subjects have developed with this reduced source of binaural activation of cortical cells, they might ha

Inter-observer reliability of localization of recorded stridor sounds in children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the inter-observer reliability in localization of recorded stridor sounds in children. METHOD: The stridor sounds of 28 children programmed for laryngobronchoscopy were recorded with a high quality digital recorder. Nineteen of these recordings with a diagnosis confirmed by endoscopy, were presented to otorhinolaryngology residents, academic specialists and non-academic consultants (n=38) in different situations with and without additional information about the subject. The participants were requested to score the sounds as pharyngeal, supraglottic, glottic, subglottic

GABA corelease guides the functional maturation of glycinergic synapses in an auditory sound localization circuit.

In the mammalian brainstem and spinal cord, glycine is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. However, during development, many glycinergic neurons also corelease the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Although the acute effects of GABA corelease on immature synaptic transmission have been increasingly characterized, its role in synapse maturation and circuit formation remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the developmental roles of GABA corelease at glycinergic synapses from the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) to the lateral superior olive (LS

The role of head movement in sound localization compensation in individuals with single-sided deafness.

The most important cues for sound-source localization in normal hearing (NH) individuals are interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences (ILDs), information that is lacking in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD). Findings from previous studies suggested that longer duration of deafness correlated with better ability of sound localization despite the sustained absence of these binaural cues in SSD patients. To investigate the role of head movements in the compensatory mechanisms of sound localization, we performed sound localization tests for patients with congenit

[Rehabilitation of sound localization ability in patients with unilateral hearing loss or single-sided deafness].

The prevalence of unilateral hearing loss(UHL) is higher, and the clinical attention to the hearing rehabilitation of UHL is not enough, resulting in many UHL patients cannot get rehabilitation timely and effectively. Severe to profound UHL(also known as single-sided deafness) patients lack binaural hearing superiority, especially the inadequate ability of sound localization, which will seriously affect their daily life and academic performance. At present, the main rehabilitation methods of UHL include various kinds of bone conduction hearing aids, vibrant soundbridge and cochlear implantatio

Improvement of sound source localization abilities in patients bilaterally supplied with active middle ear implants.

CONCLUSIONS: Patients, who are bilaterally supplied with active middle ear implants, perform slightly better in sound localization tasks than when unilaterally aided or unaided. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of bilateral use of active middle ear implants on sound source localization in the horizontal plane in patients with a sloping moderate-to-severe hearing loss. METHODS: Ten adults supplied with Med-EL Vibrant Soundbridge systems (VSB) in both ears participated in the study. Four listening conditions were tested: unaided, aided with VSB on left or right ear and on both sides. In e

Behavioral and modeling studies of sound localization in cats: effects of stimulus level and duration.

Sound localization accuracy in elevation can be affected by sound spectrum alteration. Correspondingly, any stimulus manipulation that causes a change in the peripheral representation of the spectrum may degrade localization ability in elevation. The present study examined the influence of sound duration and level on localization performance in cats with the head unrestrained. Two cats were trained using operant conditioning to indicate the apparent location of a sound via gaze shift, which was measured with a search-coil technique. Overall, neither sound level nor duration had a notable effec

Parallel thalamocortical pathways for echolocation and passive sound localization in a gleaning bat, Antrozous pallidus.

We present evidence for parallel auditory thalamocortical pathways that serve two different behaviors. The pallid bat listens for prey-generated noise (5-35 kHz) to localize prey, while reserving echolocation [downward frequency-modulated (FM) sweeps, 60-30 kHz] for obstacle avoidance. Its auditory cortex contains a tonotopic map representing frequencies from 6 to 70 kHz. The high-frequency (BF > 30 kHz) representation is dominated by FM sweep-selective neurons, whereas most neurons tuned to lower frequencies prefer noise. Retrograde tracer injections into these physiologically distinct cortic

Depth-Resolved Three-Dimensional Sound Source Reconstruction Using Acoustic Arrays: Imaging Performance, Localization Error, and Validation.

Beamforming signal processing based on acoustic microphone arrays is widely used for sound source localization and imaging. However, when investigating sound sources in complex environments, such as cockpit environments or on complex aircraft surfaces, planar imaging becomes less suitable. In addition, the array aperture and microphone density significantly influence imaging capability in different directions, not only in the frontal direction. Therefore, this paper extends the conventional beamforming algorithm into three dimensions, focusing on sound source localization and imaging quality a

Poor speech recognition, sound localization and reorganization of brain activity in children with unilateral microtia-atresia.

Microtia-atresia is a congenital malformation of the external ear, often affecting one side and being associated with severe-to-profound unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL). Although the impact of unilateral hearing loss (UHL) on speech recognition, sound localization and brain plasticity has been intensively investigated, less is known about the subjects with unilateral microtia-atresia (UMA). Considering these UMA subjects have hearing loss from birth, we hypothesize it has a great effect on brain organization. A questionnaire on speech recognition and spatial listening ability was adm

A functional neuroimaging study of sound localization: visual cortex activity predicts performance in early-blind individuals.

Blind individuals often demonstrate enhanced nonvisual perceptual abilities. However, the neural substrate that underlies this improved performance remains to be fully understood. An earlier behavioral study demonstrated that some early-blind people localize sounds more accurately than sighted controls using monaural cues. In order to investigate the neural basis of these behavioral differences in humans, we carried out functional imaging studies using positron emission tomography and a speaker array that permitted pseudo-free-field presentations within the scanner. During binaural sound local

Deep Learning-Driven Non-Contact Sound Source Localization via Multi-Axis Analysis with Laser Doppler Vibrometry.

This study presents a non-invasive sound source localization methodology that leverages multi-axis vibration analysis combined with deep learning classification. Accurate sound source localization is critical in various fields, including clinical diagnostics, where determining the origin of acoustic signals provides valuable physiological insights. Using Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV), sound-induced surface vibrations are measured, and directional information is extracted from the Log Power Spectra (LPS). The proposed framework integrates theoretical modeling of multi-axis vibrations, experime

Regional heterogeneities of oligodendrocytes underlie biased Ranvier node spacing along single axons in sound localization circuit.

Spacing of Ranvier nodes along myelinated axons is a critical determinant of conduction velocity, influencing spike arrival timing and hence neural circuit function. In the chick brainstem auditory circuit, the pattern of nodal spacing varies regionally along single axons, enabling precise binaural integration for sound localization. Using this model, we investigated the potential factors underlying the biased nodal spacing pattern. 3D morphometry revealed that these axons were almost fully myelinated by oligodendrocytes exhibiting distinct morphologies and cell densities across regions after

Auditory Spatial Discrimination and Sound Localization in Single-Sided Deaf Participants Provided with a Cochlear Implant.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial hearing is most accurate using both ears, but accuracy decreases in persons with asymmetrical hearing between ears. In participants with deafness in one ear but normal hearing in the other ear (single-sided deafness [SSD]), this difference can be compensated by a unilateral cochlear implant (CI). It has been shown that a CI can restore sound localization performance, but it is still unclear to what extent auditory spatial discrimination can be improved. METHODS: The present study investigated auditory spatial discrimination using minimum audible angles (MAAs) in 18 CI-SS

Differing Bilateral Benefits for Spatial Release From Masking and Sound Localization Accuracy Using Bone Conduction Devices.

OBJECTIVES: Normal binaural hearing facilitates spatial hearing and therefore many everyday listening tasks, such as understanding speech against a backdrop of competing sounds originating from various locations, and localization of sounds. For stimulation with bone conduction hearing devices (BCD), used to alleviate conductive hearing losses, limited transcranial attenuation results in cross-stimulation so that both cochleae are stimulated from the position of the bone conduction transducer. As such, interaural time and level differences, hallmarks of binaural hearing, are unpredictable at th
