Diagnosing specific learning disorder in adults Part II: bias, base rates, and a path forward.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of specific learning disorders (SLDs) in adults has increased substantially over the past two decades, particularly within selective postsecondary and professional training settings. Part II of this paper examines why adult SLD diagnosis is especially vulnerable to error and bias, despite diagnostic criteria requiring substantial, developmentally grounded academic impairment. METHODS: We synthesize empirical research from neuropsychology, education, and psychometrics to identify systematic sources of diagnostic distortion in adult SLD assessment. Particular emphasi

Task-specific training, learning, and memory for children with developmental coordination disorder: a pilot study.

This pilot study compared learning and memory profiles of 20 children (55% boys; M age = 7.3 yr., SD = 0.4) identified as having learning difficulties and having or suspected of having Developmental Coordination Disorder. 10 children participated in a 13-wk. program of task-specific motor exercises, while the other 10 received none. Analysis indicated significant improvement in motor skills and in visuospatial working memory by the intervention group; however, this effect did not transfer to reading and mathematics scores. Implications regarding the relations among motor skills, learning, and

Altered Expression of MeCP2 and PTEN Genes in the Molecular Basis of Specific Learning Disorder.

Specific learning disorders (SLD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that affect cognitive abilities such as reading, writing, and mathematics. The molecular mechanisms underlying SLD remain unclear, though genetic and epigenetic factors are thought to play a significant role. MeCP2 is an epigenetic regulator that binds to methylated DNA, playing a crucial role in the regulation of gene expression and SP in neuronal cells. PTEN, a tumor suppressor gene, regulates cell growth, survival, and apoptosis, and is critical for maintaining synaptic integrity. In this study, we aimed to examine the expre

Three Cases of a Specific Learning Disorder Diagnosed at the Onset of Type 2 Diabetes.

In children with type 2 diabetes, obesity is a particularly significant risk factor. Additionally, obesity has been reported to be particularly prevalent in children with neurodevelopmental disorders, attributed to various potential causes. We present three pediatric cases diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, all of whom also had dysgraphia, a specific learning disability, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with predominantly inattentive symptoms. The cases involved three male children aged 11-14 years. All had a tendency toward obesity since early childhood, had poor weight contro

Clinical Profiles and Socio-Demographic Characteristics of Adults with Specific Learning Disorder in Northern Greece.

The manifestation of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) during adulthood is one of the least examined research areas among the relevant literature. Therefore, the adult population with SLD is considered a "rare" and "unique" population of major scientific interest. The aim of the current study was to investigate, describe, and analyze the clinical, academic, and socio-demographic characteristics, and other everyday functioning life-skills of adults with SLD, in an attempt to shed more light on this limited field of research. The overall sample consisted of 318 adults, who were assessed for possi

Autistic traits in children with comorbid Specific Learning Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: cognitive, behavioral, and teacher-reported predictors.

BACKGROUND: Children with comorbid Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often show elevated autistic traits, yet contributing cognitive and behavioral factors remain underexplored. This study compared cognitive-behavioral profiles of ADHD-only and SLD+ADHD groups and identified key autistic trait predictors using a multi-informant approach. METHODS: The study included 150 children aged 8-12 years, equally divided into ADHD-only and SLD+ADHD groups. Assessments included the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) for autistic traits, the Strengths and

Children's vocabulary and friendships: A comparative study between children with and without Specific Learning Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Language skills are important in the formation and maintenance of friendships. Children with specific learning disorder (SLD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience difficulties with their relationships and have language-related problems. This study aims to examine how expressive and receptive vocabulary may relate to friendships of children with and without SLD or ADHD. Participants were 64 children with SLD, 64 children with ADHD, and 64 typically developing (TD) children, aged 8-12 years (Mage  = 9.77 years, SD = 1.22), attending Grades 3 to 6 in inclusive primary sch

Intellectual functioning and executive functions in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD).

Several studies have shown neuropsychological deficits across multiple domains in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD), but differences and similarities between these disorders have been little considered. We were interested in analyzing the intellectual and executive profiles in a sample of children and adolescents, divided according to the diagnosis into the ADHD group and the SLD group, and in identifying the differences and similarities between these disorders. The sample included two clinical groups: the first included 36 children and adoles

Can the Stroop Test be useful in differentiating specific learning disorder from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in medication-free children?

INTRODUCTION: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a significant comorbidity in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Identifying SLD in patients with ADHD is crucial because individualized educational interventions are the primary treatment for SLD. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of the Stroop Test (ST) in differentiating SLD from ADHD. METHODS: A total of 79 patients (42 with ADHD and 37 with ADHD and SLD) participated in the study. ST performance metrics (completion time, errors, and corrections) were collected by a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Addit

Error patterns on a computerized version of Raven's progressive matrices in specific learning disorders.

Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by persistent difficulties in reading, writing, or mathematics. These difficulties occur in the absence of intellectual disabilities, sensory impairments (visual/auditory), or neurological issues, indicating that SLDs do not reflect a lack of ability or a global cognitive impairment. Rather, they represent a different learning profile, where domain-specific difficulties coexist with otherwise adequate intellectual functioning. Consistent with this perspective and contemporary models conceptualizing intelligence

Prenatal Vitamin D Levels in Maternal Sera and Offspring Specific Learning Disorders.

Recent evidence has suggested potential harmful effects of vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy on offspring brain development, for example, elevated risks for neuropsychiatric disorders. Findings on general cognition and academic achievement are mixed, and no studies have examined the effect of prenatal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels on diagnosed specific learning disorders, which was the aim of this study. We examined a nested case-control sample from the source cohort of all singleton-born children in Finland between 1996 and 1997 (n = 115,730). A total of 1607 cases with specific le

The prevalence of specific learning disorder in mathematics and comorbidity with other developmental disorders in primary school-age children.

Mathematics difficulties are common in both children and adults, and they can have a great impact on people's lives. A specific learning disorder in mathematics (SLDM or developmental dyscalculia) is a special case of persistent mathematics difficulties, where the problems with maths cannot be attributed to environmental factors, intellectual disability, or mental, neurological or physical disorders. The aim of the current study was to estimate the prevalence rate of SLDM, any gender differences in SLDM, and the most common comorbid conditions. The DSM-5 provides details regarding these only f

The Relationship Between Auditory and Cognitive Processing Abilities in Children With Specific Learning Disorders.

PURPOSE: Specific learning disorder (SLD) refers to a pattern of learning difficulties characterized by problems with reading, writing, or mathematics that are not solely due to intellectual disabilities, sensory deficits, or other neurological or medical conditions. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the processing and organizing of information. Auditory and cognitive processing is affected in most children with SLD, although to a varying degree. However, it is still unclear whether there exists any relationship between auditory and cognitive processing disorders in children wit

Comorbidities Between Specific Learning Disorders and Psychopathology in Elementary School Children in Germany.

Children with reading and/or spelling disorders have increased rates of behavioral and emotional problems and combinations of these. Some studies also find increased rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, anxiety disorder, and depression. However, the comorbidities of, e.g., arithmetic disorders with ADHD, anxiety disorder, and depression have been addressed only rarely. The current study explored the probability of children with specific learning disorders (SLD) in reading, spelling, and/or arithmetic to also have anxiety disorder, depression, ADHD, and/or

Specific learning disorders in sex chromosome aneuploidies: Neural circuits of literacy and mathematics.

Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCA) are associated with an increased risk for specific learning disorders (SLD). Individuals with Klinefelter Syndrome (KS) show an increased incidence of developmental dyslexia and individuals with Turner Syndrome (TS) are often affected by developmental dyscalculia. Accordingly, KS frequently coincides with verbal deficits, and TS with visual-spatial impairments. Though neurocognitive profiles of KS and TS are well-established, little is known about the neurobiology underling learning in SCA. This review summarizes current structural and functional magnetic reso

A screening on Specific Learning Disorders in an Italian speaking high genetic homogeneity area.

The aim of the present research is to investigate the prevalence of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) in Ogliastra, an area of the island of Sardinia, Italy. Having experienced centuries of isolation, Ogliastra has become a high genetic homogeneity area, and is considered particularly interesting for studies on different kinds of pathologies. Here we are going to describe the results of a screening carried out throughout 2 consecutive years in 49 second grade classes (24 considered in the first year and 25 in the second year of the study) of the Ogliastra region.
