Stereolithographic biomodeling to create tangible hard copies of cardiac structures from echocardiographic data: in vitro and in vivo validation.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the feasibility, accuracy and clinical potential of creating polymer hard copies of echocardiographic data using stereolithography. BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography has so far been limited by the need to display reconstructed 3D objects on a two-dimensional screen. Thus, tangible stereolithographic polymer models created from echocardiographic data could enhance our spatial perception of cardiac anatomy and pathology. METHODS: Hard-copy replicas of water-filled latex balloon phantoms (n = 7) and porcine liver specimens (n = 12) were gene

Evaluating the accuracy of intraoral direct digital impressions in 2 infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate compared with digitized conventional impression.

INTRODUCTION: Presurgical infant orthopedics was introduced as an interceptive approach for treating cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). This study aimed to evaluate the intraoral digital impression technique as a viable alternative to conventional impression in infants with unilateral CLP. METHODS: Trios 3-Shape scanner (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) was used for intraoral scanning of the infants' maxillary arches to provide a direct digital scan (DDS). In addition, conventional impressions of the same patients were taken in a hospital setting, and the resultant stone models were digitized using t

From computerized tomography data processing to rapid manufacturing of custom-made prostheses for cranioplasty. Case report.

Cranioplasty is a surgical repair of a structural or morphological deformity of the skull, involving the resection, remolding and displacement of the bones of the head. As it pertains to abnormal head shape, cranioplasty is an operative procedure aimed to fill a gap in the cranial theca or to replace bone removed either as a result of trauma or infection, by means of a biocompatible artificial bony substitute. In the present paper authors report a case of custom-made cranioplasty for the reconstruction of a large bilateral skull defect, based on advanced computerized tomography data processing

3D printing in rheumatology.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing, or additive manufacturing, revolutionises medicine by creating customised objects from digital models, layer by layer. In hospitals, technologies like Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), stereolithography, and laser powder bed fusion are used, each offering unique advantages. Materials range from biocompatible polymers for orthoses to metal alloys for implants. FDM printers are affordable and suitable for prototyping but lack precision. Stereolithography provides high resolution and biocompatibility, ideal for medical devices, though postprocessing is required. P

Preoperative stereolithographic model planning for primary reconstruction in craniomaxillofacial trauma surgery.

High precision anatomical facsimile models of the patient's skull, individually produced by stereolithography, have been used in the preoperative planning in 16 patients with acute craniomaxillofacial trauma. In late primary repair, when open reduction and internal fixation had to wait for a decrease in facial swelling or cerebral oedema, computer-aided surgery has proven to be useful in terms of facilitating anatomical reduction, minimizing surgical approaches, saving operating time and leading to improved postoperative results, which may reduce the number of secondary corrections of post-tra

Customized vaginal vault brachytherapy with computed tomography imaging-derived applicator prototyping.

PURPOSE: A novel customized vaginal brachytherapy mould technique has been developed for clinical use. This image-guided technique provides a brachytherapy applicator solution for irregular vaginal vault configuration and/or a wide vaginal apex relative to the vaginal introitus that would be sub-optimally treated with standard cylinders. METHODS: The customized vaginal applicator is generated by the following process: CT images are obtained with contrast-soaked vaginal packing in situ to highlight unique anatomical detail. A 3-dimensional digital model is developed from the images and subsequ

Use of 3-dimensional stereolithographic polymer models for heterotopic ossification surgical excision.

Heterotopic ossification is a known complication of traumatic injuries. To minimize iatrogenic complications during excision, an understanding of anatomic relationships is essential. Current imaging modalities, such as computed tomography and plain radiographs, are limited to providing a 2-dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional problem. This study describes the benefits of 3-dimensional stereolithography in the perioperative management of symptomatic heterotopic ossification using models were that were fabricated based on high-resolution computed tomography scans. The models facilitated

Three-dimensional model simulation in orthognathic surgery.

Surgery simulation with a three-dimensional model constructed with stereolithography from digital image data has proven to be useful in the maxillofacial area. The simulation and surgery of Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies were carried out in two patients. The models replicating the facial skeleton with precise internal anatomy facilitated design of the osteotomy and preparation of osteosynthesis. Each sectioned segment of the maxilla and mandible was accurately repositioned by transferring the positional relationships of multiple reference points on the model to the bone sur

Individually Fitted Hearing Aid Device Manufactured Using Rapid Prototyping Based on Ear CT. A Case Report.

Rapid prototyping is the technology of automatic freeform fabrication of physical objects from virtual CAD (computer aided design) models. For medical objects the models may be created using data from CT, MR or rotational angiography. We descriobe the case of a 83-year-old woman with essential bilateral hearing impairment as the effect of chronic otitis media. An individually fitted hearing aid was produced for the patient using stereolithography technology and vacuum casting based on data obtained during ear CT. Rapid prototyping may help in manufacturing individually adjusted biomedical pros

Titanium plate reconstruction of the osseous defect after harvest of a composite free flap using the deep circumflex iliac artery.

Hernia formation following harvest of bicortical iliac crest bone occurs infrequently as a late complication and may lead to chronic pain at the donor site and rarely to obstruction and strangulation of bowel. We describe the use of a custom-made titanium plate used to reconstruct the iliac donor site following harvest of a DCIA composite free flap. A pre-operative 3D CT and stereolithography model of the ilium are used to fabricate a titanium plate of the desired shape and size. This plate is used to reconstruct the donor site defect at the time of primary surgery. This technique may reduce l

Investigation into the Impact of Hollow Cylinder Inner Diameter on the Mechanical Properties of Biomimetic Voronoi Scaffolds.

The current study investigates the mechanical performance of the hollow cylindrical scaffolds with varying inner radii designed for bone tissue engineering. The biomimetic Voronoi-based structures with distinct inner diameters were manufactured using the stereolithography (SLA) technique and eco-friendly plant-based resin. The experimental results revealed that increasing the inner radius significantly reduces the mechanical properties of the biological scaffolds. Conversely, designs with a smaller inner diameter exhibited higher resistance to compressive stress and superior energy absorption.

3-D printouts of the tracheobronchial tree generated from CT images as an aid to management in a case of tracheobronchial chondromalacia caused by relapsing polychondritis.

This report concerns a 67 year old male patient with known advanced relapsing polychondritis complicated by tracheobronchial chondromalacia who is increasingly symptomatic and therapeutic options such as tracheostomy and stenting procedures are being considered. The DICOM files from the patient's dynamic chest CT in its inspiratory and expiratory phases were used to generate stereolithography (STL) files and hence print out 3-D models of the patient's trachea and central airways. The 4 full-sized models allowed better understanding of the extent and location of any stenosis or malacic change a

Stereolithographic model construction from CT for assessment and surgical planning in congenital aural atresia.

Surgical planning for the treatment of congenital aural atresia has depended greatly on the use of high resolution computerized tomography (CT) and, recently, three-dimensional CT for visual representation of the complex anatomy associated with this condition. Computerized plastic model construction, stereolithography, allows the digital data obtained through CT scanning to produce a life-size anatomically accurate plastic model of the structure scanned. When this technique is applied to congenital aural atresia there is good bony surface rendering as well as complete representation of the dee
