Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis of the Neonate with a Delayed Second Eruption.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) of the neonate is a rare panniculitis of early life that occurs in association with gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, as well as perinatal asphyxia, hypothermia, and trauma. A characteristic feature of this condition is its self-limiting and monophasic nature. We report a highly unusual case of delayed SCFN in a male neonate involving an anatomically discrete eruption, reminiscent of erythema nodosum, occurring many weeks after his original eruption had resolved.

Changes in visceral and subcutaneous fat mass in patients with pheochromocytoma.

CONTEXT: Overproduction of catecholamine induces not only hypertension but also glucose intolerance and hyperlipidemia. However, little is known about its effect on visceral and subcutaneous fat. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate changes of metabolic factors including visceral and subcutaneous fat areas in patients with pheochromocytoma (Pheo). DESIGN AND PATIENTS: This was a cross-sectional and longitudinal follow-up study of cases collected from Gunma University Hospital between 2002 and 2013. Forty-two patients with Pheo and 23 with non-functioning adrenal adenoma (NFA) were ana

MRI and US findings of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is an uncommon, benign disorder found in full-term or post-mature neonates. It usually presents in neonates who have experienced perinatal difficulty such as asphyxia, peripheral hypoxemia, hypothermia, meconium aspiration or trauma. We present a newborn with abnormal findings on MRI and US within the axilla, neck, and abdominal walls that were pathologically proved via biopsy to be subcutaneous fat necrosis.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis associated with severe hypocalcaemia in a neonate.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) of the newborn is an uncommon disorder of the adipose tissue, mostly affecting full-term or post-term newborns who experience perinatal distress. The lesions of SFN typically occur during the first six weeks of life; they are usually self-limited and no specific therapy is required. The disorder may be rarely complicated with hypercalcaemia. We present the case of a neonate with perinatal asphyxia who manifested SFN followed by hypocalcaemia instead of hypercalcaemia and a biochemical profile of pseudohypoparathyroidism four weeks after the eruption of skin lesi

[Subcutaneous fat necrosis in the newborn: a risk for severe hypercalcemia].

Hypercalcemia associated with subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCN) is a well known but rare event in the newborn. A newborn infant with a history of SCN was admitted because of anorexia, adynamia, polyuria and polydipsia at 6 weeks of age. Serum calcium was markedly increased on admission, while it was normal on the first day of life. Evolution was favourable after treatment including isotonic saline solution, furosemide, corticosteroids, calcitonin and a low calcium and vitamin D diet. Hypercalcemia was severe enough to potentially induces fatal complications in this case. Neonates who develop ski

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn: clinical and histopathological correlation.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is a rare benign panniculitis found in term and post-term neonates. Diagnosis is based on clinical characteristics and specific alterations in the adipocytes, detected by anatomical pathology. Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn can occur in uncomplicated pregnancy and childbirth. However, perinatal complications such as asphyxia, hypothermia, seizures, preeclampsia, meconium aspiration, and even whole-body cooling used in newborns with perinatal hypoxia/anoxia may be associated with this entity.

Effectiveness and Safety of Contrast Cryolipolysis for Subcutaneous-Fat Reduction.

Cryolipolysis is the noninvasive treatment of localized fat through cold-induced panniculitis. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of contrast cryolipolysis for subcutaneous-fat reduction. Contrast cryolipolysis mixes the principles of conventional cryolipolysis and periods of heating in accordance with the contrast lipocryolysis process. Twenty-one subjects aged 34 ± 9 years were treated with contrast cryolipolysis in the regions of abdomen and flanks through the Polarys® device. Anthropometry, standardized photographs, measurements with a skinfold caliper

Association of Epicardial, Visceral, and Subcutaneous Fat With Cardiometabolic Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Excess of visceral fat is a central factor in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and atherosclerosis. However, little is known about how much epicardial fat affects cardiometabolic disorders in comparison with visceral or subcutaneous fat. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants suspected as having angina pectoris underwent cardiac computed tomography (CT) imaging. Of them, 374 subjects were analyzed the association of clinical characteristics and CT-based fat distribution measured as epicardial fat volume (EFV), visceral fat area (VFA), and subcutaneous fat area (SFA). Normal subcutaneous fat, necrosis of adipocytes and classification of the panniculitides.

The panniculitides represent a group of heterogeneous inflammatory diseases that involve the subcutaneous fat. The specific diagnosis of these diseases requires histopathologic study because different panniculitides usually show the same clinical appearance, which consists of erythematous nodules on the lower extremities. However, the histopathologic study of panniculitis is difficult because of an inadequate clinicopathologic correlation and the changing evolutive nature of the lesions. In addition, large scalpel incisional biopsies are required. From histopathologic point of view, all pannic

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn: a review of 11 cases.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) of the newborn is uncommon and usually occurs in the first weeks of life following a complicated delivery. The frequency with which hypercalcemia develops as a complication is uncertain. We report the clinical features of SFN in 11 patients seen between 1991 and 1998. Ten were born by cesarean section and fetal distress was present in the majority. It was not possible to distinguish SFN from sclerema neonatorum by time of onset or related infant diseases. Hypercalcemia developed in four infants up to 7 weeks after the onset of SFN. Infants with this condition sh

Infant feeding and subcutaneous fat at birth and at one year.

Skin folds were measured at birth and at 1 year in infants who were obese, normal or thin at birth, infants of obese mothers and infants of diabetic mothers. There was no significant correlation between skinfold thickness at birth and skinfold thickness at 1 year and there was no significant difference in skinfold thickness between any of the groups at 1 year of age. These findings are not consistent with the hypothesis that overnutrition in the last 10 weeks of pregnancy has a permanent effect on the adiposity of the infant. The distributions of triceps and subscapular skinfolds in these 1-ye

Subcutaneous fat modulates insulin sensitivity in mice by regulating TNF-alpha expression in visceral fat.

The distribution of fat in obese persons is related to the risk of developing various metabolic disorders, such as glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and hypertension, and the combination of these conditions is known as the metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of subcutaneous fat in regulating insulin resistance and its influence on TNF-alpha expression in visceral fat, by using mice that were subjected to subcutaneous lipectomy with or without subsequent fat transplantation. After partial subcutaneous lipectomy, mice showed significantly greater accumulation of

Inherited basis of visceral, abdominal subcutaneous and gluteofemoral fat depots.

For any given level of overall adiposity, individuals vary considerably in fat distribution. The inherited basis of fat distribution in the general population is not fully understood. Here, we study up to 38,965 UK Biobank participants with MRI-derived visceral (VAT), abdominal subcutaneous (ASAT), and gluteofemoral (GFAT) adipose tissue volumes. Because these fat depot volumes are highly correlated with BMI, we additionally study six local adiposity traits: VAT adjusted for BMI and height (VATadj), ASATadj, GFATadj, VAT/ASAT, VAT/GFAT, and ASAT/GFAT. We identify 250 independent common variant

Utility of high-resolution ultrasound in measuring subcutaneous fat thickness.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies conclude that high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) enables noninvasive and accurate measurements of subcutaneous fat thickness. The primary objective of this cross-sectional study was to better characterize subcutaneous fat thickness measurements in a diverse patient population using HRUS. Secondarily, we sought to correlate these measurements with patients' body image. METHODS: A cross-sectional study to measure subcutaneous fat measurements at seven distinct anatomic sites, including upper and lower extremities, submental, and torso regions, in 40 men and women of d
