Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is characterized by hyperplasia of the synovial tissue in joints, of tendon sheaths, and of the mucous membranes, or fibrous tissue adjacent to the tendons. Its etiology is unknown. We report a case of diffuse intra-articular PVNS of the right knee in a 38-year-old man. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of the disease are described.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a lesion of benign proliferative synovium that invades joint, tendon sheath, and bursa. It mainly occurs in 1 joint, the knee joint or hand, and multi-joint invasion is reported to be <1%. Rare cases have been reported of PVNS occurring in the shoulder joint. Generally, total synovectomy is a standard treatment of PVNS. However, complete synovectomy is sometimes impossible because of difficulty of visualization and access to the whole joint and subacromial space. Therefore, recurrence of the disease is always of concern. This article presents a case o

BACKGROUND: Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the hip is a rare disease. Synovectomy is generally accepted as the only surgical treatment for the disorder, but there have been few studies with a sufficient sample size and duration of follow-up to allow the evaluation of long-term outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term outcome of the treatment in sixteen patients.
METHODS: Sixteen patients (nine men and seven women), with a mean age of 35.5 years at the time of surgery, were treated between 1970 and 1996. Complete synovectomy was performed in all patients; in addition

18 Fluorine fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) has been used extensively in positron emission tomographic (PET) imaging for oncology. FDG is a glucose analog demonstrating enhanced uptake in the majority of malignant as well as granulomatous lesions. Although a few cases of pigmented villonodular synovitis using bone scanning agents Tl-201 chloride, Ga-67 citrate, and Tc-99m pentavalent dimercaptosuccinic acid have been published, to our knowledge FDG PET imaging of pigmented villonodular synovitis has not.

INTRODUCTION: Neglected elbow dislocation is defined as a dislocation that is present for 3 weeks or longer. There is no available literature on neglected elbow dislocations, leading to ankylosis of the elbow joint.
CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old female sustained a road traffic accident. Anteroposterior and lateral view radiographs of the forearm were done and deemed to be normal at another hospital. Six months after the injury, she presented to us with complaints of absent elbow movements. Examination revealed the elbow to be fixed in 30° of flexion. Radiographs of the elbow revealed an ankylosi

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign proliferative disorder of synovium that surrounds the joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae. The elbow is rarely affected, making it difficult to establish treatment guidelines. This article relates on a case of a male patient who presented with elbow pain and decreased range of motion. Diagnosis was established with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and biopsy, followed by arthroscopic removal and synovectomy. The patient was pain free shortly after surgery and gained free range of motion after six weeks. At the most recent follow-up after six m

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare proliferative condition of the synovium that affects large joints. The primary treatment options are synovectomy and a combination of synovectomy and arthroplasty. We performed a systematic review of the literature, excluding all nonclinical and review articles with follow-up of less than 2 years. Primary outcomes reported were disease recurrence, symptom progression, and revision surgery. Student t tests were used to compare outcomes after synovectomy with outcomes after synovectomy combined with arthroplasty. Twenty-one studies (82 patients) were in

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare disease. It is a benign neoplastic process typically affecting young to middle-aged adults and most commonly involving the knee, hip, and shoulder joints. The symptoms include diffuse pain and swelling with discomfort. We report a rare case of localized PVNS originating at the proximal tibiofibular joint in a 39-year-old female patient with radiologic changes for short duration of time. The clinical history, plain radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, and pathologic findings of the reported patient were reviewed. Complete surgical excision w

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a slowly progressive lesion of uncertain etiology that involves the synovial membrane of joints or tendon sheaths. Only rarely does PVNS affect the axial skeleton, where it arises from the vertebral articular facet joint. Its treatment and prognosis remains limited.
PURPOSE: To describe our management in a patient with PVNS and to review previously published cases.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
METHODS: This is a case report of a 59-year-old woman who presented left sciatica. Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed a mixed sclero

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) of the knee is a benign but locally aggressive disease of synovial proliferation that occurs in localized nodular and diffuse villous growth patterns. Although inflammatory and neoplastic causes have been hypothesized, etiology remains unknown. Presenting as unilateral knee pain and swelling, PVNS mimics other knee ailments. Radiographs are often unremarkable, whereas magnetic resonance imaging may show characteristic intra-articular masses with signal dropout on T2-weighted sequences. Pigmented villonodular synovitis is surgically treated with open or a

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Pigmented villonodular synovitis is an exceptional condition in children. The clinical, biological and imaging presentation is not specific and a histology sample is required for certain diagnosis. Because of this lack of specificity, together with the rare occurrence of the disease, late diagnosis is not uncommon, making correct management an even greater challenge in the growing child.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Between 1995 and 2001, six children were treated for pigmentary villonodular synovitis, four girls and two boys, mean age 11.5 years. The knee was involved in five c

UNLABELLED: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVS) is characterized by a locally aggressive synovial proliferation that engenders progressive destruction of cartilage and bone. Two cases, a diffuse and a localized form, are reported.
CASE REPORT: 1) A 9.9-year-old boy followed up for a popliteal cyst presented with chronic arthritis of the left knee. Aspiration yielded a bloody synovial fluid. MRI showed a heterogeneous synovial process with decreased signal in both T1- and T2-weighted images. The diagnosis of PVS was made on histology of an excisional biopsy. A complete open synovectomy was

INTRODUCTION: Tenosynovial giant-cell tumor also known as pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVS) is a benign but aggressive synovial proliferative disease most often affecting the knee joint. The mainstay of therapy is surgical resection. Due to a high rate of local recurrence, radiosynoviorthesis (RSO) is used as an adjuvant method in many cases. The aim of this study was to compare local recurrence (LR) rates after surgical synovectomy with and without adjuvant RSO.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1996 to 2014, 37 surgical interventions were performed in 32 patients with diffuse pigmented villo

We report the 2-year follow-up results of a hemiarthroplasty in a 29-year-old patient with pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) with extra-articular extension and severe bony destruction. The patient presented with diffuse pain and swelling of the right shoulder for several years. Radiographs showed severe osteolytic lesions in the humeral head and neck, greater tuberosity, and a small osteolytic lesion in the glenoid neck area. Further examination with magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder joint showed a large, lobulated soft tissue mass extending from the subdeltoid area to the chest

Primary pachydermoperiostosis is a rare genetic disease affecting the skin and musculoskeletal system. In contrast to secondary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, primary pachydermoperiostosis is considered a benign condition. While a variety of associated abnormalities have been described in this form, any association with tumors was previously reported in the literature. We hereby describe the first case of a 20-year-old man with primary pachydermoperiostosis revealed by a knee synovial tumor.
