The effect of flavonoids on transduction mechanisms in lipopolysaccharide-treated human gingival fibroblasts.

Periodontal disease comprises a group of infections that lead to inflammation of the gingival and destruction of periodontal tissues and is accompanied by the loss of the alveolar bone with eventual exfoliation of the teeth. Porphyromonas gingivalis is a Gram-negative bacteria obtained from the periodontal pocket of patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis. This bacteria presents in the external membrane lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Flavonoids are molecules obtained from plants and possess anti-inflammatory properties. Herein we characterize the effect of the flavonoids quercetin, genis

Induction of protein oxidation in human low density lipoprotein by the photosensitive organic hydroperoxide, N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyperoxy-2-methoxyethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene-tetra-carb oxylic- diimide.

We have developed a new molecular probe, N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyperoxy-2-methyoxyethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalen e-tetra-carboxylic- diimide (NP-III), that specifically generates hydroxyl radical upon irradiation with longer wavelength ultraviolet light (UVA). Hydroxyl radicals are generated only upon irradiation, thus NP-III is a new controllable hydroxyl radical source. Apolipoprotein (apo-B) of human low density lipoprotein (LDL), and bovine serum alubumin (BSA), were irradiated with UVA in the presence of NP-III and their oxidation was evaluated by two independent methods: assay of protein carbonyl g

Clinical, biochemical, and genetic characterization of Lebanese patients with chronic granulomatous disease due to NCF2 pathogenic variants.

Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) is caused by mutations in the NADPH oxidase complex that impair the ability of phagocytes to eliminate injested pathogens. As a result, patients with CGD suffer from recurrent infections and chronic inflammation. We report the clinical, biochemical, and genetic basis of the disease in 17 CGD patients from Lebanon. Whole exome sequencing (WES) identified 2 distinct mutations in NCF2 resulting in the deletion of exons 3 and 5, accounting for 82 % of the cases that underwent WES. This high prevalence provided the rationale for a diagnostic strategy involving as

Plants used in Guatemala for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. 1. Screening of 84 plants against enterobacteria.

Gastrointestinal disorders are important causes of morbidity in developing countries. Natural healing is the traditional way of treating these diseases in Guatemala. Ethnobotanical surveys and literature reviews showed that 385 plants from 95 families are used in Guatemala for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. The activity of 84 of the most commonly used plants was screened in vitro against five enterobacteria pathogenic to man (enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae and Shigella flexneri). Results indicate that 34 (40.48%)

Chicken manure and cow manure regulate phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated alkaline soils through distinct mechanisms.

Phytoremediation can completely remove harmful heavy metals from soil; however, it is limited by low efficiency and long cycling times. In this study, to further improve the efficiency of phytoremediation of alkaline cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soils, we investigated the enhanced Cd uptake capacity of Tagetes patula L. through manure application and explored its underlying mechanisms. The results indicate that chicken manure significantly increased soil available Cd through pH reduction, thereby enhancing Cd enrichment in T. patula. In contrast, cow manure did not alter soil pH or available Cd.

Marigold flavonoids coordinate emulsion stabilization, epithelial transport and gut microbiota modulation to enhance intestinal lutein absorption.

BACKGROUND: Flavonoids naturally coexisting with lutein in marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) extracts have been suggested to influence carotenoid bioavailability; however, their coordinated roles in intestinal lutein absorption remain insufficiently understood. This study systematically explored the synergistic effects of six major marigold flavonoids on lutein absorption via a multilevel strategy integrating emulsion behavior, intestinal epithelial transport and gut microbiota modulation. RESULTS: In vitro, flavonoids stabilized lutein-containing mixed emulsion, reduced particle size, increased ζ

Chemical forms of cadmium in soil and its distribution in French marigold sub-cells in response to chelator GLDA.

The use of degradable chelating agents to facilitate phytoextraction is a promising low-cost method for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. However, there are few studies on how plants and soils respond to the chelating agents. In this study, the responses of French marigold (Tagetes patula L.) and soil cadmium (Cd) to the chelator tetrasodium glutamate (GLDA) was investigated in a 180 d field trial. Five GLDA treatments (0, 292.5, 585, 1170, and 2340 kg hm-2) were carried out in a Cd-contaminated soil (0.47 mg kg-1) under French marigold plantation. The results showed that the

Enhanced phytoremediation of Cd- phenanthrene co-contaminated soil through the combined application of electric field and chemical additives.

Electric fields and chemical additives can enhance phytoremediation, but their synergistic mechanisms in cadmium (Cd)-phenanthrene (PHE) co-contaminated soils remain unclear. Here, a greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to investigate the combined effects of a direct‑current electric field and chemical additives (citric acid + ammonium nitrate) on the phytoremediation of Cd-PHE co‑contaminated soil using marigold (Tagetes patula L.). The combined treatment (Phy‑CN‑EK) achieved the highest PHE removal (82.3%) and total shoot Cd uptake (41.443 μg pot-1), and simultaneously increased the relat
