Although superficial fungal infections of the skin often respond to topical agents, systemic therapy is sometimes necessary. This article gives a review of the effectiveness of the oral antifungal agents fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor, tinea corporis/cruris, and tinea pedis. Four hundred milligrams fluconazole as a single dose and 200 mg itraconazole daily for 5 to 7 days were effective in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor; terbinafine taken orally appears to be ineffective in pityriasis versicolor. Tinea corporis and tinea cruris were

A multicentre clinical trial with tolciclate was carried out in Italy on 1083 patients suffering from skin mycoses (tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, tinea manuum and pityriasis versicolor). Both preparations (1% cream and lotion) showed a good activity evaluated weekly by clinical examinations and mycological assessments, i.e. culture for tineas and microscopy for pityriasis versicolor. Favourable clinical results ranged from 83% to 97% according to diagnoses. Cultural or microscopic conversions obtained in a mean time of about 2 weeks varied from 70% to 91%. BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor) is a chronic superficial mycosis caused by yeasts of the Malassezia spp. genus commensal of the keratinized layers of the skin. Under conditions not yet understood, it becomes pathogenic determining the clinical manifestations of the disease. It is a recurrent skin condition and persistent hypopigmentation may remain after treatment, causing social problems to those affected.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and epidemiological features of patients diagnosed with tinea versicolor treated at a referral center for dermatology (Alfredo da M

Epidural analgesia is usually contraindicated in case of infection at the site of needle insertion. Tinea versicolor is a benign superficial cutaneous fungal infection caused by the proliferation of a skin commensal yeast of low pathogenicity. We report the case of a pregnant woman with a tinea versicolor in the lumbar region, who benefited from a labor epidural analgesia, realised with reinforced antiseptic measures. No neurological or infectious complication occurred.

The efficacy, acceptability, and tolerability of tioconazole solution (1%) in a pump spray were evaluated in an open-label trial in 26 patients with dermatophytosis, superficial candidiasis, and tinea versicolor. Medication was applied twice daily for 30 consecutive days. Eighteen patients had dermatophyte lesions: four patients had tinea pedis interdigitalis (one of these also had tinea cruris), and 14 patients had tinea corporis. Of these, four patients did not respond to treatment and were considered therapeutic failures and ten were carriers and remained so one month after therapy. Five pa

Ketoconazole is a new antifungal drug, used for oral treatment, with a broad spectrum of activity. It is a member of the imidazole series and is active in superficial and deep mycotic diseases, in candidosis and pityriasis versicolor. This new imidazole derivative has been successfully administered in several cases of dermatophytosis, yeasts and pityriasis versicolor in the authors' clinic, as well as in many other research centres. Treatment has been given to patients with tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, with or without location in interdigital spaces, while the cases of tinea capi

Tinea infections are caused by dermatophytes, except for tinea versicolor, which is caused by yeasts in the Malassezia genus. If available, potassium hydroxide preparation should be performed to confirm diagnosis of tinea capitis or onychomycosis. In some cases, fungal culture, UV light examination, or periodic acid-Schiff stain can be helpful. Topical drugs are effective for tinea corporis, tinea cruris, and tinea pedis. Tinea incognito is an atypical presentation that usually requires systemic treatment. Management of tinea capitis always requires oral drugs. Oral drugs are preferred for ony

The Japanese Society for Medical Mycology (JSMM) decided in 2002 to establish guidelines for the clinical evaluation of antifungal agents. The JSMM committee presents here guidelines for the clinical evaluation of topical antifungal agents in the dermatology field. Guidelines for the Clinical Evaluation of Antibiotic Agents established by the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy were referred to, and the diseases subjected to clinical evaluation include tinea (tinea pedis and tinea glabrosa), cutaneous candidiasis, and pityriasis versicolor. Among superficial mycoses, tinea pedis is viewed as the

The yeast Malassezia furfur is a part of the resident flora of human skin. It causes various diseases such as pityriasis versicolor, which hardly shows signs of inflammation despite marked clinical symptoms (e.g. hypopigmentation). The pathophysiology related morphological picture might give a clue to this phenomenon. As a part of the literature data are controversial, the present study compared the inflammatory infiltrate of pityriasis versicolor with that of tinea corporis in 40 human skin preparations each from diagnostic specimens. All preparations were stained with HE and PAS. Neutrophili

Two hundred and eithteen cases of fungal skin infections were studied. Tinea cruris was most common (34.4%), followed by tinea corporis (23.8%) znd tinea pedis (21.6%). Tinea versicolor (8.7%) tinea manum (4.6%) tinea ungaium (3.7%) and tinea capitis (3.2%) were also seen. The male: female ratio was 4:1. The total isolates were 117. Trichophyton rubrum was the most common isolate (35%). closely followed by Epidermophyton floccosum (31.6%). Trichphyton mentagrophytes (17.9%), Malassezia furfur (13.7%) and Microsporum audouini (1.7%) were the only other isolates.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (PV), also known as tinea versicolor, is caused by Malassezia species. This condition is one of the most common superficial fungal infections worldwide, particularly in tropical climates. PV is difficult to cure and the chances for relapse or recurrent infections are high due to the presence of Malassezia in the normal skin flora. This review focuses on the clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of antifungal treatment for PV.
METHOD: A systematic review of literature from the PubMed database was conducted up to 30 September 2014. The search criteria were

This article describes common cutaneous mycoses in children: mucocutaneous candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor, tinea corporis, tinea pedis, onychomycosis and tinea capitis. Topical therapy is effective in tinea corporis and pedis, pityriasis versicolor and cutaneous candidiasis. It is ineffective in tinea capitis, in immunocompromised children and onychomycosis. Griseofulvin has been the main treatment until now in children, but it is only fungistatic, may cause interactions and has to be given for long periods. Ketoconazole has not been widely accepted for use in children because of hepatotox

4103 cases suspected of mycoses were analysed as to sex, age and site of disease and 3891 were proved cases. This group formed 50% of total mycoses or 13-93% of all dermatoses recorded in the Government General Hospital, Madras, during the period of study. There were 66-26% adult female, 27-6% adult male and 6-14% were below 13 years. Dermatophytoses were found in 73-5%; the other common diseases were tinea versicolor (17-68%) and candidiasis (12-43%). Multiple sites of involvement or more than 1 disease in the same individual were mostly observed. The incidence of piedra (0-1%) and deep mycos
