An animal model of chronic tympanic membrane perforation.

Previous investigations into the healing and reconstruction of tympanic membrane (TM) perforations have involved animal models with acute TM perforations. A problem with the acute TM perforation model is that most acute TM perforations will heal spontaneously, both in animals and human beings. A second inadequacy of acute perforation models is that they are not analogous to the salient problem in human beings: long-standing TM perforation. The ideal animal model must have a TM perforation that is permanent, well-epithelialized, and free from infection. The perforation must also be subtotal to

[Advances of chronic tympanic membrane perforation animal model].

Chronic tympanic membrane perforation in an animal model has been widely used. The ideal model is a lasting and stable perforation without infection. For half a century, several physical modalities have been evolved, such as thermal injury, infolding technique, tympanostomy tube, re-myringotomy, and laser myringotomy. Chemical methods using chemical substance inhibiting growth and repair of cells as well as using gene defect animals are also applied. We have found the success rate is lower when using only one method and it would be better to combine physical and chemical approaches. In this ar

Acute otitis media with spontaneous tympanic membrane perforation.

The principal aim of this review is to present the current knowledge regarding acute otitis media (AOM) with spontaneous tympanic membrane perforation (STMP) and to address the question of whether AOM with STMP is a disease with specific characteristics or a severe case of AOM. PubMed was used to search for all studies published over the past 15 years using the key words "acute otitis media" and "othorrea" or "spontaneous tympanic membrane perforation". More than 250 articles were found, but only those published in English and providing data on aspects related to perforation of infectious orig

Chronic tympanic membrane perforation in an animal model.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to revalidate and reproduce a chronic tympanic membrane perforation animal model. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, animal study. METHODS: Eight female chinchillas underwent bilateral thermal myringotomy. The edges of the perforation were folded inward using microflaps. The perforations were followed over time to monitor the course of closure. RESULTS: Two animals were excluded from the study because of ear infection. None of the other tympanic membrane perforations remained open. The closing time varied from 4 to 6 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate

Tympanic membrane perforation repair with acellular porcine submucosa.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of acellular porcine small intestine submucosa in the repair of chronic tympanic membrane perforations. Although tympanoplasty with autologous temporalis fascia and cartilage is common practice in the repair of chronic tympanic membrane perforations, these materials are associated with increased operative time and have variable availability and quality in individual patients. Recently, new materials for tympanoplasty have been explored, including acellular human dermis. Small intestine submucosa (Surgisis) is an inexpensive and readily available alternative

[Antimycotic therapy in otomycosis with tympanic membrane perforation].

Especially after prolonged antibiotic ototopic therapy otomycosis is not rare. An inoculation of fungi into the tympanic cavity however may have serious sequelae. Therefore an eradication of fungi from the external auditory canal is imperative before surgery. In addition to thorough cleaning of the outer ear canal antimycotic preparations are recommended in treating otomycosis. However, all of the commercially available ear drops contain ototoxic agents. In the case of defects of the tympanic membrane a damage of the inner ear may result. Alternatively, we suggest an aqueous solution of Micona

Intratympanic membrane cholesteatoma after traumatic tympanic membrane perforation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intratympanic membrane cholesteatoma presents as an asymptomatic, white, round mass on the tympanic membrane, and is usually detected incidentally in children. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old Korean boy visited our otorhinolaryngology clinic for a whitish mass on the right tympanic membrane. He had a history of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in the right ear that had occurred 1 year prior, which had healed well with a paper patch placement. The mass was completely removed under local anesthesia during surgery with a microscope. The mass was on the outer epithelial layer

Tympanic membrane Patcher: a new device to close tympanic membrane perforations in an office setting.

OBJECTIVE: To assess a new device intended to cover tympanic membrane (TM) perforations in an office setting. STUDY DESIGN: Not all patients with TM perforations require or choose tympanoplasty surgery. Alternatives to surgery (e.g., paper and plastic onlay) have limitations that prompted a need for an alternative method. A new, simple device, designed to be inserted into the perforation, is made out of a very soft silicone in the shape of a sealed tympanostomy tube. The TM Patcher is self-stabilizing without adhesives. SETTING: An outpatient office. PATIENTS: Twenty-nine patients with 30 c

Determinants of conductive hearing loss in tympanic membrane perforation.

OBJECTIVES: Tympanic membrane perforations are common, but there have been few studies of the factors determining the extent of the resulting conductive hearing loss. The aims of this study were to determine whether the size of tympanic membrane perforation, pneumatization of middle ear & mastoid cavity, and location of perforation were correlated with air-bone gap (ABG) of patients. METHODS: Forty-two patients who underwent tympanoplasty type I or myringoplasty were included and preoperative audiometry were analyzed. Digital image processing was applied in computed tomography for the estimat
