Brazil has been the benchmark for volleyball performance for at least two decades, providing a unique context to examine expertise development. This study examined the variation in body size, functional capacities, motivation for achievement, competitiveness, and deliberate practice of youth volleyball players associated with differences in biological maturity status, chronological age, and accumulated deliberate volleyball practice, adopting a Bayesian multilevel modeling approach. We considered 68 female and 94 male adolescent players (14.2 years, 90% confidence interval: 12.7 to 16.0). Play

The lateral tilt of the arms accompanied by trunk lateral tilt is a typical blocking manoeuvre in volleyball. However, during this unanticipated blocking movement, an associated risk of ACL injury may result. The aim of the present study was to compare associative ACL risk factors at the initial contact and the first and second peak of VGRF during an unanticipated blocking movement with different arm positions. Synchronized kinematic and kinetic data were collected for each trial of each condition. Student paired t-tests and effect size were used to determine differences between two conditions

Due to high training loads and frequently repeated unilateral exercises, several types of sports training can have an impact on the process of posture development in young athletes. The objective of the study was to assess and compare the postures of adolescent male volleyball players and their non-training peers. The study group comprised 104 volleyball players while the control group consisted of 114 non-training individuals aged 14-16 years. Body posture was assessed by the Moiré method. The volleyball players were significantly taller, and had greater body weight and fat-free mass. The ana

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of an elite female volleyball player who complained of diarrhea and fatigue after preseason training.
BACKGROUND: The athlete lost 8.1 kg during the first 20 days of training, and we initially suspected an eating disorder. The sports medicine team interviewed the athlete and found she did not have psychological symptoms indicative of an eating disorder. The results of routine blood tests revealed critically high platelet counts; in conjunction with the physical findings, the athlete was referred to a gastroenterologist.
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS: Our initial sugge

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of a collegiate athlete with an atraumatic osteochondral fracture influenced by the presence of osteoarthritis.
BACKGROUND: Osteochondral fractures are fairly common occurrences in athletes, although it can be difficult to recognize such an injury in the absence of a traumatic event. Osteoarthritis is 1 condition that can increase an athlete's susceptibility to an atraumatic osteochondral fracture. However, because of the atraumatic nature of the injury, the possibility of an osteochondral fracture may be overlooked.

Two cases of isolated neuropathy, not consequent to acute trauma, of the axillary nerve of young volleyball players are described. Interest in the pathology derives from the rarity of such case reports and the fact that the pathogenesis may be linked to a specific sporting activity. The lesion site is thought to be in the quadrilateral space.

OBJECTIVE: To compare jump performance and inter-limb force asymmetry between male and female collegiate volleyball athletes, examine short-term in-season stability and identify which asymmetry metrics best support applied monitoring and reconditioning decisions.
METHODS: In a prospective cohort, NCAA Division I volleyball athletes (23 males, 18 females) completed weekly bilateral countermovement jumps (CMJ). Inter-limb asymmetry indices for peak force, braking force, and rate of force development (RFD) were computed as the absolute percentage difference between limbs (100·|Right-Left|/max[Ri

Background Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition, particularly among adolescent and young adult females, often associated with sports involving high knee loads, such as volleyball. While previous studies have examined local and distal factors contributing to PFP, the role of trunk muscle strength remains underexplored, particularly in elite athletes. Objective The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between PFP and trunk muscle strength in elite adolescent female volleyball players. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 23 elite ad

CONTEXT: Women's volleyball requires frequent and repetitive jumping that when performed with altered biomechanics, including kinematic or kinetic asymmetry, may place the athlete at high risk for injury. This study identified and analyzed lower-extremity biomechanical asymmetries in college women's volleyball players during standard and sport-specific double-leg landing tasks.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional laboratory study.
METHODS: Eighteen female college volleyball players were analyzed using standard 3D motion capture techniques during a drop vertical jump and an unanticipated lateral reactive

BACKGROUND: Knee injuries are common in volleyball athletes, often resulting from the sport's unique movement requirements. Among these, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are particularly prevalent, and while the existing literature has examined risk factors such as biomechanical asymmetries and landing mechanics, there is limited research on the relationship between hand dominance and the side of injury.
PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between hand dominance and ACL tear laterality in competitive volleyball players diagnosed with first-time unilateral ACL tears.
STUDY DESIGN: Cros

Paget-Schroetter syndrome is a rare upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis caused by repetitive mechanical compression of the subclavian vein. A 39-year-old male volleyball coach presented with progressive swelling of the right arm. Imaging revealed subclavian vein thrombosis and a concomitant pulmonary embolism. No thrombophilia or secondary causes were identified. Given the history of repetitive overhead activity, Paget-Schroetter syndrome was diagnosed. Anticoagulation and activity restriction resulted in symptom resolution within three weeks. This case highlights the importance of recognizin
