IntroductionReal-world behavioural interventions are required that support long-term weight loss maintenance. This study evaluates the most recent weight and body mass index (BMI) outcomes of adults who first joined a community weight management programme in 2016 and accessed support >two years later.MethodsElectronic records enabled matching of data for members engaging/re-engaging between 2018 and January 2025.ResultsOf 100,393 adults, (8.5% male), mean age and BMI at baseline were 49.4 (13.79) years and 33.9 (6.82) kg/m2. 93.7% were matched to an Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) quintile

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding the effectiveness of pre-pregnancy weight loss interventions on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in women with overweight or obesity.
METHODS: Comprehensive literature searches were conducted across nine databases from inception to May 2024. RCTs comparing pre-pregnancy weight loss interventions with blank control or active control among adult women with overweight or obesity were included. Meta-analyses, using a random-effects model, were performed to pool results of RCTs.
RESULTS: Six studies, including 1

Introduction: Lifestyle interventions aiming to reduce excess body weight have been focusing on individuals living with overweight or obesity. However, many health-related behaviors including eating are concordant in couples indicating they might share an obesity risk or support each other's weight loss efforts. Aim: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was to assess the weight change effects of lifestyle interventions targeting couples in a romantic relationship regardless of marital status or sexual preference compared to individuals or no inter

Adding feedback messages (FB) to self-monitoring (SM) may reinforce behavior change. However, socio-environmental conditions (e.g., limited access to parks or low walkability) may limit one's ability to respond to FB focused on physical activity (PA). In this analysis, we hypothesized that high neighborhood walkability will positively modify the treatment effect of FB on PA, and residents of high walkability neighborhoods will achieve higher PA levels at 12 months than those in low walkability neighborhoods. The study is a secondary analysis of a 12-month behavioral weight-loss trial. Adults w

BACKGROUND: Overweight and obesity are common amongst women attending breast cancer Family History, Risk and Prevention Clinics (FHRPCs). Overweight increases risk of breast cancer (BC) and conditions including1 cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type-2 diabetes (T2D). Clinics provide written health behaviour advice with is likely to have minimal effects. We assessed efficacy of two remotely delivered weight loss programmes vs. written advice.
METHOD: 210 women with overweight or obesity attending three UK FHRPCs were randomised to either a BC prevention programme (BCPP) framed to reduce risk o

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have high rates of obesity and low levels of physical activity. This analysis examined changes in light, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time, and the association between changes in MVPA and weight loss in adolescents and young adults with IDD and overweight and obesity participating in a 6-month multi-component weight loss intervention.
METHODS: Adolescents and young adults with IDD and overweight or obesity (body mass index ≥ 85 percentile, n = 110, age ~16 years, 52.7

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend that clinicians should make brief opportunistic behavioural interventions to patients who are obese to increase the uptake of effective weight loss programmes. The objective was to assess the effect of this policy on socioeconomic equity.
METHODS: One thousand eight hundred eighty-two consecutively attending patients with obesity and who were not seeking support for weight loss from their GP were enrolled in a trial. Towards the end of each consultation, GPs randomly assigned participants to one of two 30-s interventions. In the active intervention (support ar

Most expert opinions and guidelines indicate the necessity for weight loss before in vitro fertilization (IVF) in women who are overweight or obese. This is based on the documented impact of obesity on pregnancy rates and pregnancy complications and the long-term impact on the child in natural conceptions. Some clinicians and authorities refuse to treat patients unless they are below a certain body mass index. In the past this advice has been hindered by a lack of opportunity for patients to join lifestyle programs and the high dropout failure before treatment. However, the ideal has remained

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the association between pretreatment and during-treatment weight change, as well as differences in self-regulation between those who gain weight, remain weight stable, and lose weight pretreatment.
METHODS: Data from the first 6 months of a behavioral weight loss study were used. Participants (n = 283) were weighed at two assessment points (screening visit and baseline) prior to the start of treatment and at every treatment session. Participants were divided into those who gained weight, remained weight stable, or lost weight between the screening visit and the first treat

BACKGROUND: There is a need to better identify adverse responders to weight-loss interventions. The aim of this study was to: 1) identify potential predictive factors of adverse responders to weight loss; and 2) follow their long-term evolution.
METHODS: One-hundred participants (56 females) with overweight (59.5±4.9 years) followed a 3-week intervention combining physical activity and diet followed by one-year monitoring, and were divided into three subgroups: 1) group A (N.=13) - "regainers" (weight regain during follow-up >100% of initial loss); 2) group B (N.=25) - "moderate regainers" (w

BACKGROUND: Postpartum weight retention (PPWR) causes intergenerational harm, negatively affecting a mother's cardiovascular health and ability to have future healthy pregnancies. Low-income minority women are at highest risk for PPWR with little guidance concerning timeline or strategy to lose weight after delivery. An academic-community partnership conducted observational and focus group work to develop an intervention for PPWR among low-income mothers. This study's objective is to determine the feasibility of implementing a PPWR intervention trial in partnership with a community-based organ

BACKGROUND: Low income and low health literacy are associated with poorer health knowledge, health behaviors and poor health outcomes. The effectiveness of health literacy-directed weight loss treatment interventions in primary care clinics is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to conduct a pragmatic cluster-randomized trial (PROmoting Successful Weight Loss in Primary CarE in Louisiana ([PROPEL]) to test the effectiveness of a 24-month, patient-centered, literacy-directed obesity treatment program delivered within primary care in an underserved population. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women. Many of these women are overweight or obese. A minor weight loss of 5%-10% can significantly reduce reproductive, metabolic and psychological symptoms of PCOS and is recommended as a first step in the treatment of overweight or obese women with PCOS. Many weight loss programs have been proposed, but optimal methods on how to achieve the recommend weight loss are lacking. The aim of this systematic review was to generate practical tools for health professionals to guide women with PCOS towards a sustainable healthi

This paper describes the methodology, design and procedures used in the HEADS UP Project, an observational study to examine the feasibility of a state-funded weight loss program. HEADS UP offered two weight loss approaches: bariatric surgery or a non-surgical intervention composed of medical management, a low-calorie liquid diet and lifestyle change promotion. Participants were recruited through a multi-stage screening process, in-person interviews, and an initial low-calorie diet program. Eligible participants were entered into a lottery system, with 100 participants selected for the surgical

PURPOSE: To identify demographic, (bio)physical, behavioral, and psychological determinants of successful lifestyle change and program completion by performing a secondary analysis of the intervention arm of a randomized-controlled trial, investigating a preconception lifestyle intervention.
METHODS: The 6-month lifestyle intervention consisted of dietary counseling, physical activity, and behavioral modification, and was aimed at 5-10% weight loss. We operationalized successful lifestyle change as successful weight loss (≥ 5% weight/BMI ≤ 29 kg/m2), weight loss in kilograms, a reduction in e

IMPORTANCE: A Mediterranean-style dietary pattern has been shown to reduce chronic disease morbidity yet has been understudied in weight loss intervention trials in the US. Weight loss interventions promoting this pattern may reduce obesity-related morbidity more than interventions primarily focusing on energy restriction.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a behavioral weight loss intervention promoting a Mediterranean-style dietary pattern yields sustained weight loss at the 24-month follow-up and improves diet quality compared with a control intervention focused on reducing energy intake.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how weight loss interventions in older adults with obesity impact aging biology can lay the foundation for targeted, 'geroscience-based' interventions. This study examines the association between changes in the senescence-associated secretory phenotypes (SASP) and changes in function in response to a weight loss intervention.
METHODS: We conducted a post-hoc biomarker analysis on adults aged ≥ 65 years with body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2 enrolled in a six-month, non-randomized telemedicine-delivered weight loss intervention. We assessed 16 SASP cytokines using serum

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2024eng
Overweight and obesity affect 71.2% of adults in the United States, with cancer survivors not far behind at 70.3%. Subgroups such as those diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) face even greater challenges. The Exercise and Quality Diet after Leukemia (EQUAL) trial sought to address weight management issues among ALL survivors by implementing a remotely delivered weight loss intervention, leveraging the previously proven Practice-based Opportunities for Weight Reduction (POWER) program. Despite a strong foundation and design, the EQUAL trial yielded null results. Key differences in
