Physiological mechanisms of adaptation to weightlessness. Data from experiments with animals in earth-orbit biosatellites.

Four experiments were carried out with mammals (white laboratory rats) in Kosmos biosatellites. The experimental results indicate that rather prolonged weightlessness does not cause pathological changes in internal organs. Changes were discovered in the metabolic and hormonal status of the organisms, allowing us to consider an 18-22-day space flight as a moderately stressful activity. Changes in the musculoskeletal system involved atrophy of particular muscle groups, adaptive transformation of the contractile properties of some of them, osteoporosis, and decreased durability of bony tissue. Inertial torque during reaching directly impacts grip-force adaptation to weightless objects.

A hallmark of movement control expressed by healthy humans is the ability to gradually improve motor performance through learning. In the context of object manipulation, previous work has shown that the presence of a torque load has a direct impact on grip-force control, characterized by a significantly slower grip-force adjustment across lifting movements. The origin of this slower adaptation rate remains unclear. On the one hand, information about tangential constraints during stationary holding may be difficult to extract in the presence of a torque. On the other hand, inertial torque exper

[A study on the counteracting effect of hypoxia and Qigong on simulated weightlessness and orthostatic tolerance after bedrest].

-6 degrees head down bed rest (-6 degrees HDBR) 21d were used to simulate weightlessness. 15 healthy males, aged 19-22, were divided into 3 groups with 5 people in each group: control group (-6 degrees HDBR), hypoxia group (-6 degrees HDBR + Low Oxygen), Qigong group (-6 degrees HDBR + Qigong). The results showed that the reduction of weight, perimeter of shank, daily average cardic output, basal cardic output and the pulse pressure of the Qigong group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). The basal cardic output and the perimeter of shank of the Hypoxia group reduced significan

Precision-Arranged DNA Origami Plasmonic Nanoantennas for Multidimensional Smart-Warning of Weightlessness Induced Bone Loss.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) shows promise for monitoring health during space missions, particularly in assessing the effects of microgravity and radiation. However, traditional SERS sensors struggle with precise interfacial engineering, leading to a relatively poor assembly efficiency, and are unable to meet the practical needs of extreme spaceflight environments. To address this, it is designed and fabricated precision-arranged DNA origami plasmonic nanoantennas. By leveraging DNA origami's addressability, it is built a 3 × 4 antenna array with a controlled spacing of 21.76 nm, e

Effects of various countermeasures against the adverse effects of weightlessness on central circulation in the healthy man.

The effect of lower body negative pressure, local negative pressure below the knee joint, and both pneumatic and mechanical occlusion cuffs at the upper third of the femur on central circulation, oxidative metabolism, and acid-base equilibrium of blood was studied on eight healthy male volunteers with doublelumen Swan-Ganz flow-directed thermodilution catheters implanted for 7 d into the pulmonary artery. The counter-measures against the adverse effects of weightlessness were used in two regimens: regimen I at -30, -50, +40 torr and regimen II at -60, -100, and +60 torr. The parameters were re

Simulated weightlessness procedure, head-down bed rest has reversible effects on the metabolism of rhesus macaque.

It is a consensus in the international manned space field that factors such as microgravity during the space flight can cause anxiety, depression and other important brain function abnormalities in astronauts. However, the neural mechanism at the molecular level is still unclear. Due to the limitations of research conditions, studies of biological changes in the primate brain have been comparatively few. We took advantage of -6° head-down bed rest (HDBR), one of the most implemented space analogues on the ground, to investigate the effects of simulated weightlessness on non-human primate brain

External to internal cranial perfusion shifts during simulated weightlessness: Results from a randomized cross-over trial.

The exact pathophysiology of the spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) has so far not been completely elucidated. In this study we assessed the effect of acute head-down tilt position on the mean flow of the intra- and extracranial vessels. Our results suggest a shift from the external to the internal system that might play an important role in the pathomechanism of SANS.

Protective effects of compound Gastrodia elata formula on the cognitive impairment induced by simulated weightlessness in mice.

Growing evidence highlights that long-term orbital flight may lead to structural changes in brains and cognitive impairments in astronauts. However, effective strategies to counteract these effects remain limited. Compound Gastrodia elata Formula (CGEF), composed of Gastrodia elata Bl., Polygonatum sibirium Red., and Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf has been shown to improve learning and memory. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects and underlying mechanisms of CGEF in attenuating cognitive deficiency induced by simulated weightlessness in mice. A cognitive impairment model was induced in mi

[Effects of weightlessness on osseous tissue of the rat after a space flight of 5 days (Cosmos 1514)].

Five pregnant female growing rats have been orbited for five days aboard the Cosmos 1514 soviet biological satellite. They were compared to five female rats kept in vivarium and five female conditioned rats in synchronised way. Histomorphometric studies were performed in order to investigate: 1. The early effects of weightlessness on the bone mass in loading (tibiae and femur) and unloading bones (thoracic and lumbar vertebrae). 2. The changes of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities. A short exposure does not induce changes in the bone mass and the inner structure of loading and unloading

Anti-Weightlessness Physiological Protection for the Lower Limb Muscle System Based on Biomimetic Adhesive Force Stimulation.

With the advancement of crewed spaceflight, mitigating the physiological effects of microgravity, such as bone-muscle deterioration and movement instability, has become increasingly vital. Inspired by reptilian climbing mechanisms, this study presents a novel bio-inspired adhesive footwear characterized by low pre-load, strong adhesion, and controllable attachment-detachment capability. This study analyzes the adaptability of a multi-level variable modulus design to surfaces with varying curvatures and roughness. Experimental investigations were conducted to analyze the contact mechanics and i

The effect of Bu Zhong Yi Qi decoction on simulated weightlessness‑induced muscle atrophy and its mechanisms.

Microgravity has been previously demonstrated to induce skeletal muscle atrophy, loss of muscle force and disorders in myogenesis and metabolism. Current pharmacological strategies exhibit poor efficacy. Bu Zhong Yi Qi decoction (BZ) is a well‑known traditional Chinese medicine decoction used for myasthenia gravis. In the present study, its effect on unloading induced muscle atrophy was investigated. The mousetail suspension model was used to simulate weightlessness induced muscle atrophy. The results indicated that BZ could significantly protect muscles from simulated weightlessness‑induced a

The effect of Hydrogen-rich water on retinal degeneration in the outer nuclear layer of simulated weightlessness rats.

Long-term spaceflight can lead to changes in eye structure and decreased visual function. At present, there are almost no effective methods to prevent and treat eye damage caused by microgravity environments. Oxidative stress has been identified as one of the contributing mechanisms of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), and hydrogen (H2) has demonstrated significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to determine whether hydrogen-rich water (HRW) has a protective effect against eye injury induced by tail-suspension simulated weightlessness in

Effects of Ginsenoside Rb1 on the Crosstalk between Intestinal Stem Cells and Microbiota in a Simulated Weightlessness Mouse Model.

Exposure to the space microenvironment has been found to disrupt the homeostasis of intestinal epithelial cells and alter the composition of the microbiota. To investigate this in more detail and to examine the impact of ginsenoside Rb1, we utilized a mouse model of hindlimb unloading (HU) for four weeks to simulate the effects of microgravity. Our findings revealed that HU mice had ileum epithelial injury with a decrease in the number of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) and the level of cell proliferation. The niche functions for ISCs were also impaired in HU mice, including a reduction in Paneth
